All kinds of wonder
Gippsland is a diverse region located to
the east of Melbourne, stretching to the
New South Wales border.
The region is known for expansive coastline and
the Gippsland Lakes, Wilsons Promontory National
Park and a cluster of charming villages, including
Walhalla, Loch and Metung. It’s also known for
great food and wine, and a chance to see wildlife
in the wild.

Gippsland offers an iconic coastal itinerary to
self-drive between Sydney and Melbourne.

GIPPSLAND FOOD & DRINK
Gippsland is home to one of Australia’s emerging food and wine destinations.
The region produces an impressive array of premium, cool climate wines, quality cheeses, free range meats
and organic fruit and vegetables. The region also produces fresh fish and seafood in abundance.

Gippsland is home to an emerging set of dining and drinking experiences worth the drive. Hogget Kitchen
in West Gippsland and Sardine Eatery + Bar in East Gippsland are both hatted restaurants, offering produce
from local farmers and growers.

GIPPSLAND’S LAKES & COAST
With over 600km of coastline, Gippsland is spoilt with its choice of beaches.
The Gippsland Lakes provide a water-lover’s sanctuary as the largest inland
waterway in Australia.

From the beaches of the Bass Coast to Squeaky Beach at Wilsons Prom, and beyond to Ninety Mile Beach -
one of the longest uninterrupted stretches of beaches in the world, Gippsland is a favourite for beach dwellers.

The Gippsland Lakes provide the ultimate water playground for visitors. Stretching over 400 square
kilometres the Gippsland Lakes offer secluded inlets, tranquil rivers and sheltered anchorages all year
round. Visitors swim, sail, boat, kayak, fish and stand-up paddle board in its sheltered waterways.

WILDLIFE, IN THE WILD
Kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, emus, koalas, possums and echidnas are
all commonly sighted Australian animals found in Gippsland.
Wilsons Promontory National Park, just three hours' drive from Melbourne is a haven for Australian wildlife.
Visit at dawn or dusk to take advantage of native animal viewing times at The Prom, as they forage for food.
Offshore, there is a permanent seal colony at Kanowna Island, and little penguins are often spotted feeding
at sea. Dolphins abound and at certain times of the year, southern right and humpback whales are often
spotted. The Gippsland Lakes in the east abound with native birds and at Croajingolong National Park, over
280 species of birds co-exist. Raymond Island, just off Paynesville is home to a large koala colony and is the
best place in Victoria to see koalas in the wild.

EAST
 GIPPSLAND
     The East Gippsland region is abundant
     with visitor experiences.
     Few places in the world offer the diverse
     waterways and fishing opportunities of the
     Gippsland Lakes. Learn how to sail, stand-up
     paddle board or kayak or take to the ocean from
     a deep sea fishing charter.

     Eleven world class national, coastal and marine
     parks and reserves are here to explore.
     Croajingolong National Park cocoons a diversity

NATIONAL PARK
The Gippsland Lakes offer the perfect boating destination, offering secluded
inlets and sheltered anchorages year round. Local boat hire businesses teach
visitors how to operate a yacht or cruiser, no licence required.

Fishing in the region is a limitless adventure, with a long list of fish and
shellfish on offer. Enjoy a guided fishing tour of the lakes or take to the open
water in search of some really big fins.

Croajingolong National Park hugs the Coast for 100km north of the Lakes

 South Gippsland is a leisurely two-
 hour drive south east of Melbourne.

 The region is renowned for its spectacular
 scenery, unspoilt beaches, towering forests
 and farm fresh produce. A nature-lover's
 paradise, the South Gippsland coastline is
 home to Wilsons Promontory National Park and
 is a highlight of the Sydney-Melbourne touring
 route. It is a must see destination, offering the
 chance to visit mainland Australia's southern-
 most point.

WILSONS PROMONTORY
NATIONAL PARK
Wilsons Promontory National Park is Victoria’s largest wilderness coastal
landscape and Australia’s southern most mainland destination. Affectionately
known as “The Prom”, it is a 50 000 hectare nature reserve threaded with a
labyrinth of walking tracks. Home to tranquil rivers, intimate coves, granite
mountaintops and lush forested valleys, The Prom also hosts an array of
secluded beaches.

The Prom is a refuge for an array of native wildlife including kangaroos, emus,
wombats, echidnas and koalas. Visitors are encouraged to stay overnight as
the best wildlife viewing times are dawn and dusk when the animals feed. The
birdlife is also prolific. Crimson rosellas, gold whistlers and yellow tailed black
cockatoo are all visible here.

CENTRAL
     GIPPSLAND
     Located just over two hours from
     Melbourne, the Central Gippsland
     region offers abundant opportunities
     to delve into authentic and local
     Australian experiences, as part of the
     Sydney-Melbourne Coastal drive.

     The region includes the High Country villages of
     Dargo and Licola, and one of the world’s longest
     beaches, the aptly named Ninety Mile Beach.
     A must-do experience in Central Gippsland is to
     walk across the suspension bridge through the
     rainforest canopy at Tarra Bulga National Park.
     The rainforest, giant ash and myrtle beech are
     all easily accessible via short strolls through
     the scenic park.

     Central Gippsland’s idyllic Australian landscape
     make it the perfect off-highway alternative on
     the Sydney-Melbourne touring route. Stop and
     cycle a section of the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail,
     sip and swirl at a winery, experience a proper
     country pub meal, or bushwalk the Freestone
     Creek and the beautifully scenic Blue Pool.

Day 2: Travel south via coastal towns and vistas, then cross the border into Gippsland. Just
south of the border lies Mallacoota, which is surrounded by Croajingolong National Park and gives

access to extensive waterways. Explore walking trails and Gabo Island’s historic lighthouse. Stay in
Mallacoota or at nearby Gipsy Point.

Day 3: Head south towards the Gippsland Lakes. Spend the day discovering waterways. Explore
hamlets, coastline and river systems as you travel. Sample local seafood and observe the sea and
bird life. Raymond Island, a short ferry ride away from Paynesville, has a koala population.

Day 4: Head for the hills for a day spent at Buchan, exploring the ancient honeycomb caves
system. For the adventurous, head further north to the legendary Snowy River National Park and
experience Little River Gorge Lookout.

Day 5: Depart the Lakes region and travel through Gippsland’s farmland before stopping in Sale
to explore wetlands, gardens and galleries. Pass through Yarram to view the stunning Heesco
murals, then on to Tarra Bulga National Park before heading to Wilsons Promontory. An alternative
is the inland route via the historic town of Walhalla.
                                                                                                        Day 7: Depart the Prom and head back to Melbourne via

     GIPPSLAND
     West Gippsland is an easy one hour
     drive east of Melbourne. The region
     announces itself with rolling green
     pastures, nestled between the Baw
     Baw and Strzelecki Ranges.
     Visitors can explore the beauty of Toorongo
     Falls, and stroll across the Noojee Trestle Bridge
     before continuing to Walhalla and Mt Baw Baw.

     Walhalla is steeped in rich gold mining history
     and is home to only a few residents but there
     are many things to do including riding the
     historic Walhalla Goldfields Railway and visiting
     the Extended Long Tunnel Gold Mine. Walhalla
     is a must-do stop on the Sydney-Melbourne
     touring route.

     In winter, visitors can take a snow break at Mt
     Baw Baw Alpine Resort and enjoy some easy
     skiing, snow play or a Howling Huskies sled tour.
     The gentle slopes and ski runs are designed with
     beginners in mind.

     Yarragon village offers an eclectic range of
     shops, galleries and eateries. Visitors here
     enjoy an array of shopping experiences from art,
     giftware or retro homewares.

     COAST
     Phillip Island, best known for its
     irresistible nightly Penguin Parade
     nestles alongside the mainland
     Gippsland coast in the region known
     as the Bass Coast. The Bass Coast
     stretches from San Remo through
     Kilcunda and on to Wonthaggi and
     Inverloch.
     The George Bass Coastal Walk is a cliff-top
     trail that stretches from the outskirts of San
     Remo (just off Phillip Island) along 7km of
     coastal landscape to Kilcunda. The walk links
     into the Bass Coast Rail Trail which extends to
     Wonthaggi.

     The Bunurong Coastal Drive offers a series
     of dramatic beachscapes including Eagle’s
     Nest, and links into the charming seaside town
     of Inverloch. In winter, the drive offers great
     opportunities to spot whales from shore on
     their annual migration. Inverloch offers a great
     base as visitors travel from the penguins to
     The Prom.
