Items for “The Basics” are suggested per child.
Print YOUR total number needed on the line.
“THE BASICS”
In the student’s own pencil case and/or desk:
____ One pencil case or a cosmetic bag or small box with attached lid
(something that stays open on its own to look into and is reasonably durable)
____Two pencils: thicks for the littles; ____thins for others
(non-plastic barrels are easier to sharpen)
____One eraser (e.g. white all-purpose including art)
____One ruler (straight edge, metric, imperial)
____One set of crayons: thicks for the toddlers; ____set of 8-24 for
primaries/juniors; ____ set of 8 for older students (optional)
____One set of pencil crayons: thicks for K/1; ____ set of 12-24 for
other grades
____One glue stick
____One pencil sharpener (optional)
____supportive seating arrangements for growing bodies (e.g. chairs of
appropriate size with work surfaces of appropriate width and height)
Additional pencil case items for grades 3 and up:
____One or two blue pens, ____one red pen, ____one to three black
or green or purple pens
____One correctional white tape
____One math set (e.g. protractor, circle drawing tool, etc.)
____One calculator (grades 5/6 and up perhaps)
____One small stapler (optional)
____One set of markers (optional, but ideally in a separate pencil case)

The “Sharp and Sticky” Shared Container: (e.g. small basket or box or pockets)
____Wet white school glue
____Scissors ____ Special Scissors (e.g. zig-zag)
____Tape (for projects – see bottom of page)
____Single hole-punch
____Small stapler
3 “Special” Shallow Shared Containers (e.g. boxes such as from puzzles or Bibles or
greeting cards…with lids). These are for special times such as art class or special projects or evenings.
____One to two sets of crayons, many shades of
colours
____One set of pencil crayons, many shades of colours
____One to two sets of markers
Project Supplies (optional; could be stored in a box, shelving, or in drawers):
____white paper (letter size)
____cardstock (white and/or coloured – letter size or scrapbook size)
____coloured paper (letter size)
____construction paper (all colours of course!)
____sketchbooks
____split pins _____thumb tacks ____extra staples
____masking tape ____thin clear/invisible tape
____bookbinding tape (packing tape) ____cloth tape ____duct tape

Notetaking Supplies (e.g. stored on shelves or in drawers):
____exercise books: special-lined for littles; __________
____ regular-lined for older students
Note: I estimate an average of 2 exercise books per subject for primary levels (remember, the
page sizes are often smaller and the print size larger for this stage) and up to 3 exercise
books per subject for other levels. Alternatively, you might like a “paper with binder” system.
____graph paper
____blank paper
____lined paper
____binders (sizes….)
____dividers (often sold in packs)
or ____labels to attach to cardstock paper to make your own dividers.
____blank journals (optional) – I like non-lined ones for kindergarten.
____personal laptop or access to a computer for research and typewritten
assignments (upper level students)
Storage Solutions…
Decide on a place for keeping notebooks for various subjects located
right IN the homeschooling area, such as
____pocket chart storage
____crates on shelving
____set(s) of drawers
____bookshelves
and a place for keeping “extra” school supplies (e.g. pencils, paper) for later
during the year, kept out of school area such as in basement so that it is not
as readily accessible to get messed up.
____storage boxes
____set(s) of drawers (Tip: That’s also where I keep my project supplies, rather than in a box.)

Outdoor Exploration Container(s) (e.g. in a backpack, basket, crate, or box):
(see also the Math and Science Equipment section)
____clipboard for handouts or blank paper
(with an attached string and pencil?)
____bugcatcher (or baby food jar with nail holes punched in the lid)
____paper lunch bags (e.g. to collect coloured leaves, etc.)
____whistle?
____hats; ____sunglasses?

____dry snack food, e.g. raisins, granola bars, dry cereal, crackers…
____picnic supplies plus a bag for trash
____cloths (for cleaning hands before/after eating)
____blanket for sitting on grass or sand

____retractable measuring tape (e.g. found in fabric stores or toy stores)
More optional items for outdoor learning:

____a spot to keep a student’s “collections” (e.g. rocks)

____tent (for an outdoor “schoolroom”)
Craft Supplies (depending on what you like to do; underline items):
googly eyes, fake feathers, pipe-stem cleaners, cork bottle tops (float), magnetic tape, paper plates,
paint (e.g. 6-9 colours of tempera blocks, non-toxic craft paint, finger-paint), fabric scraps, cotton balls,
sponge, drinking straws (blow painting), tissue paper (e.g. mosaics), roll of paper, aprons, plastic
tablecloth, reeds for basket-making, yarn, embroidery thread, clips or clothespins to close bags or hang
to dry items, nice magazine/travel brochures/old calendar pictures to glue, small wooden shapes,

Especially For the “Littles”:
I’ve always homeschooled with a baby, toddler or preschooler around! You can
see more of what I suggest for keeping little hands busy and little hearts happy
here: Designing a Home Preschool for 2s and 3s (a special planning guide
which is also downloadable for free in our planning guides section).
Some moms store items in a plastic drawer cart in their homeschool area. Others
store these items in various places such as an extra kitchen drawer, a box under
Mommy and Daddy’s bed, or on a high shelf in a basket.

____large paintbrush; ____large-sized paper; ____”fingerpaint”
paper (which tolerates more wetness before ripping)
____extra-thick washable crayons kept in a “special” container ____
____”Safety” scissors; ____cutting practice papers or paint strips
____”Paint with Water Beginner” books; ___doodlepad or sketchbook
____Homemade playdough in a plastic container; ____plus “tools”
____Dry rice or split peas or pasta; ____measuring scoops, spoons
____beanbags; ____ balls; ____ containers to play with (e.g. empty food
containers, toy wagon to pull indoors, doll stroller, sand bucket of cars, basket, cloth wallet with zipper)
____”easy-to-peel” stickers plus sticker book (e.g. a photo album)
____large cardboard box (appliance size) for playhouse or car, etc.
____wooden sticks (popsicle sticks or people-shaped found in craft areas)

Teacher’s Desk Area Supplies:
____ sticker packs: 1-2+ packs per season (for rewards)
____one or two shareable dictionaries (I like an easy-to-read one
such as a Collins Junior Dictionary plus a regular size thick one.)
____one or two thesauruses
____a French-English dictionary (helpful for older levels)
____ teaching posters about _________________________

____removable adhesive putty/gum for walls (to stick posters up)
____a map (or globe) of the world; ___a map of Canada; ___a flag
____ blackboard and ___ chalk; ____chart paper and markers or
____whiteboard and ___whiteboard markers (xylene-free, low odour, for
example, Ecosmart, AusPen)
____bulletin board (or cork to make a wall boarder or your own board)
____3-hole punch ____ regular-size stapler
(I also like the long arm kind of stapler to easily bind some booklets.)
____paper clips and/or ____butterfly clips and/or ___binder clips
____Post-It® Flags (to mark pages you want to photocopy or refer to)
____cue cards or a small pad of paper to make notes
____a nice mug (for your de-caff coffee, hot chocolate, peppermint tea, black currant juice,
lemon water, or whatever you like to sip on ☺ )
____a binder or two (to keep you organized with your ideas, plans, important stuff to
remember for your family); ____ dividers for the sections
____hole-punched plastic sleeves (to organize small bits of paper that you’ve written on
and don’t have time to re-write elsewhere at the moment)
____Washi tape or special stickers (to decorate your binders, your clipboard, etc.)
