THE CLIENT
Established in 1915 by Boston Mayor James
Michael Curley, City of Boston Credit Union
(CBCU) is still one of the oldest Credit Unions
in the United States today. For a century City of
Boston Credit Union has been here to provide
complete, professional and friendly financial
services to their members.
City of Boston Credit Union is owned by their
members. Each member has one share in the
Credit Union, giving each member an equal vote
in the Credit Union’s direction regardless of the
size of their savings.2 City of Boston Credit Union Case Study
THE CHALLENGE
In April of 2019, CBCU acquired the former
Northeastern University Federal Credit Union, and
roughly five months after the acquisition, the campus
branch closed. With that, CBCU wanted to create a
new environment to consolidate the two credit unions.
This new location needed to be close to Northeastern
Federal Credit Union’s former branch to ensure their
transferred members would not have to travel far for
their financial needs.
Adding to the list of needs, CBCU also wanted this
new branch to appeal to a new market of potential
members – younger generations in particular. Lastly,
they needed this location to have the most up-to-date
bank equipment and make the transition from a branch
with a teller line to a branch with a teller pod.
We knew we had to execute
something completely different from
OUR APPROACH
the other branches we’ve completed
for CBCU in past years to attract We landed in the Back Bay/Fenway area on Westland
members of all generations. Ave in Boston, fulfilling all of their requirements.
Surrounded by prestige colleges, trendy restaurants,
Symphony Hall, and five minutes from Northeastern
Federal Credit Union’s former branch – this location
was perfect. We moved quickly to create multiple
design options alongside a well-detailed project
budget to provide expectations on the cost. We knew
we had to execute something completely different
from the other branches we’ve completed for CBCU in
past years to meet the needs and captivate members
of all generations.
Bringing the city inside and capturing the look
and feel was our inspiration focus for the interior
design. Incorporating CBCU’s brand with technology
and creating a member-centric branch that would
encourage an engaging and educational environment
was our primary focus from the beginning.4 City of Boston Credit Union Case Study
THE RESULTS
Team NES managed the project throughout all
construction phases. Unfortunately, the arrival of
covid-19 put a halt to all construction for a few months,
but as soon as we were allowed back on site, we picked
up right where we left off. Some minor adjustments to
the design did have to be made to help promote social
distancing. Although we never like a delay on a project, it
was worth waiting for this new branch.
The result is a welcoming, vibrant and dynamic space
that truly captures the look and feel of the surrounding
area. With 1,946 square feet, this branch features a teller
pod, two ITM’s (Interactive Teller Machines), a café and
lounge area, private offices, and a conference room.
Our branding team, ReVive by Triad, used the clean,
modern lines of CBCU’s logo, city lights and icons that
provide a Boston-centric design. A gorgeous mural by
a local artist grounds members in familiarity right as
they enter, followed by the ITM’s that are wrapped with
city scenes. The Zakim Bridge – one of Boston’s most
beloved landmarks is used as inspiration for lighting and
frosted glass. Hand-painted instruments are displayed
throughout as an homage to Symphony Hall.
This branch turned out to be truly one-of-kind and
exceeded CBCU’s goals in creating a branch that will
survive and thrive in this ever-changing industry.ABOUT
