“Intelligence plus
character—that is the
goal of true education.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
About Presbyterian Colleges
Presbyterians have long regarded education
as a core value—and not just for Presbyterians.
Our colleges welcome all students. Diversity,
community and hospitality are Presbyterian
values as well.
Presbyterian colleges and universities are
private, independent, self-governing institutions
that share an historic relationship with the
Presbyterian Church (USA). While each school is
unique, they share a common commitment to:
Academic excellence grounded
in the liberal arts
Freedom of inquiry—engaging
students to think critically about
all matters of life
Serving others and being
stewards of the world around us
Presbyterian colleges are, for the most part,
small schools that offer big opportunities. They
are residential and focus mainly, though not
exclusively, on undergraduates. Classes are small
and most are taught by professors, not graduate
assistants. This enables students to participate
more fully in class and enables professors to offer
students individual attention.
Presbyterian colleges place the highest priority
on teaching, learning, responsibility and working
for the common good.
Using this book
This guide provides a snapshot of the many
fine schools that are historically related to the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). It is designed to
help you find the college that is right for you.
Much more information can be found on the
colleges’ websites.
Finding the right college can be an adventure
where you will learn things not only about
the schools but also about yourself. So let the
adventure begin!

The College of Idaho, Muskingham University,
Centre College, Montreat College 3Finding the right college
No college is right for everyone. The RIGHT college is
the college that is right for YOU—a school that reflects
your values, provides a strong educational foundation,
lets you to pursue your passions and challenges you
with new opportunities.
Don’t choose a college merely because it has a famous
name or a “Top 10” sports team, because one or more
of your friends is going there or because Mom or Dad
went there. Choose a school that looks and feels like
the place where YOU belong, a place that will equip
you with the skills that equip you for life.
Where to begin?
Finding a college can seem daunting at first.
Start by setting some criteria:
• Big school or small?
• Close to home or farther away?
• Big city or small town?
• Warm climate or cold?
• Subjects you might want to study
• Sports and activities
• Religious life
• Opportunities for internships,
research and study abroad
• Programs that will help you get
into graduate school
• Other factors important to you
When to start?
While it is never too early to begin thinking about
college, a good time to start your search is during your
junior year of high school.
After you have established some criteria and looked
at a few college websites, you should be able to start
narrowing the field. The next step is to visit some
campuses.
“The best college to attend is the
one that looks like an adventure, a
place that will take you where you
have always wanted to go. The worst
college to attend is the one your
friends say you cannot turn down.”
Jay Mathews: Harvard Schmarvard
4Getting the most
from a campus visit
• Visit when school is in session.
• Take notes.
(After a few campus visits, you won’t
Muskingham University
remember what you heard where.)
• Meet your admissions counselor.
• Talk with students and faculty.
• Sit in on a class.
• Tour a typical freshman dorm.
• Eat in the cafeteria.
• Explore extracurricular activities.
• Evaluate support services—health,
wellness, counseling, career planning, etc.
• Ask how the college will help you make
the transition from high school.
• Consider the year-round climate.
(The weather will be different in
January than in June.)
• Walk or drive around the nearby community.
Belhaven University
• Ask yourself if the college meets all
of your needs and expectations.
• Ask your parents what they think.
The college admissions office can help you get the
most out of your visit. When scheduling a visit, tell
the admissions office what you would like to see
and do while on campus.
The College of Wooster
6 Maryville CollegeWhat about rankings?
Magazines and books that rate colleges are popular.
They can provide useful information about a school’s
size, setting, students and key subjects. They may
offer helpful advice about a college’s selection
process, financial aid and ways to improve your
chance of being admitted. Less important are the
college rankings, which usually are based on a
combination of factual information and subjective
evaluation. A college that someone ranks 50th may
not be that different from the one ranked 150th.
Don’t rule out a school merely because it is not on a
“best colleges” list. Remember, the best college is the
college that is best for YOU!
It costs how much???
One question you should NOT ask immediately is,
“Can I afford it?”
While going to college can be expensive, colleges
work with students and their families to make
themselves affordable. The majority of students
at most colleges receive some form of financial
assistance. With scholarships and grants, private
colleges are comparable to and sometimes less
expensive than public institutions.
Important things to keep in mind
• Going to college is about getting an
education, not merely a degree
• The test for finding the right college
should not be how selective it is, but how
suitable.
• There are many good colleges to which
you can be admitted, including some
about which you might not have heard.
• Colleges care as much about finding the
right students as students should care
about finding the right college.
• Pay attention to deadlines.
• Visit before you decide.
• You can afford to go. The financial aid
office will show you how.
• Mom and Dad can help, but the final
decision should be yours.
• Finding the right college is worth the
effort. Take the time to do it right.
