Visit of NZ Boxing Champion to MRGS

At the start of this term Joseph Parker, national heavyweight boxing champion visited one
of our assemblies. He was accompanied by his manager Kevin Barry who also spoke to our
students. They reminded us all of the rewards of dedication and application and Joseph
encouraged our students with his own story of achievement through goal setting and focussed
effort . The visitors met with students informally before the assembly and many were able to
have their photo taken in the company of the rising 21 year-old sports star. After his recent
title victory he brought with him the championship belt which was also a focus of interest as
he answered question in the school gym at lunchtime.

Term 4 Sports News

Cricket

The 1st XI Girls team finished in 1st place in the Premier 2 Competition in Term 1 and
sought to have the same success in Term 4. They were moved up a grade and have been
playing against the top Girls Cricket schools in Auckland. While they have lost 3 games, all
of them have been close and the skills of some of the younger members of the team indicate
that the good results will come in future years. Shriya Naidu, current Captain of the team has
also been selected for the Auckland Under 21 team, a superb achievement considering she is
only 17.
Visit of NZ Boxing Champion to MRGS
The 1st XI Boys team have played two games in their second half of the season, winning 1
and losing 1. In their game against Papatoetoe they displayed a full team effort by dismissing
the opposition for under 130 run including 3 run outs. In reply we chased down the target in
under 22 overs. The team lost their next game to Takapuna by 6 wickets, after scoring 219
runs including 88 to Karan Banker (his second half century in as many games) they bowled
and fielded too loosely allowing the opposition to easily take the win.

The 2nd XI Boys team have also recorded a win and a loss so far this season. They sit in 4th
position in their competition with 2 games to play.

The Junior Boys had an excellent win against Kelston Boys last week. The team bowled
incredibly well to dismiss the opposition for only 26 runs. The wicket takers were Josh
Simmons with 4 wickets and Ronan Heanaghan and Shehzur Ahmed both with 3 wickets.
The team chased down the target with ease in the 6th over without losing a wicket.

Volleyball

The Boys and Girls Junior Volleyball teams have now finished their season. The Boys team
played in the Central Division 3 grade and finished in 3rd place with 5 wins and 3 losses.
Thank you to Mr Matila and John Wuatai for coaching this team. The Girls team played in
the Central Division 1 grade and finished in 9th position. The team was coached by ex-
student Leilani Marshall.

Waterpolo

The Junior Boys team have had a tough season so far with the results not going their way.
They have been training hard at EGGS on Thursday afternoons and many will look to take
the step up to the senior team in 2014.

Touch

We have one junior boys team entered in the Central B Grade competition. They have played
3 games winning 2 with 1 draw and are currently 1st in their grade. They have 3 weeks of
competition left this season.

Lacrosse

The Senior Boys Lacrosse team have finished their season in 6th position in Auckland. It was
a very successful season with the team winning 4 games and losing 4 games. In the playoff
for 5th/6th positions the team started well and were up 2-0 early in the 1st Quarter.
Unfortunately they could not apply enough defensive pressure for the remainder of the game,
eventually losing 5-8 to MAGS. Thank you to Mark Freemon for expertly coaching the
team and Mrs Bartlett for managing the boys so well.

Rugby Sevens

We sent both a Boys and Girls Senior Sevens team to the Auckland Rugby Sevens
Competition. The Boys team won 1 game and lost 3 in a tough pool. They lost their Plate
Quarter Final to Papatoetoe. The Girls had a successful day and narrowly lost the Cup
Quarter Final 12-17 to Edgewater.

Orienteering

We sent 5 teams to the Auckland Secondary School Rogaine Championships held at
Shakespeare Regional Park. For all of the teams this was their first ever time competing in a
rogaine and they all learned a lot about this new sport. The highlight of the day was Felix
Yang and Paul Robinson who finished 11th in the Junior Boys category. Keep any eye out
for more Orienteering events in 2014 as they are a great way to challenge the body and mind!

Trampolining

Madison Smith (GDNB) competed in the New Zealand National Gymsports Championships
in October. Her highlight was finishing in 3rd place in the Double Mini Trampoline. She was
competing against girls from around New Zealand and Australia and was the youngest
international competitor. Well done Maddie.

Sports Award Evening

Our sporting excellence was celebrated this term with an evening of citations and awards for
all our sporting codes. Guest presenter was Sarah Cowley' New Zealand track and field
athlete' who in 2012 competed at the Summer Olympics in the women's heptathlon event.
Sarah was introduced to the attending students, staff and parents in a question and answer
session with Sports Co-ordinator Mr Horne. Her comments gave an insight into the demands
of top level training and competition—while inspiring our own young sportsmen and women
with what rewards can be gained by commitment and goal setting. The evening ‘s accolades
began with the presentation of student coaching certificates amongst which Vignesh
Krishnamoorthy received the outstanding student coach of the year award. There then
followed the announcement of colours in all the sporting codes and the comments
accompanying these awards paid tribute to the performance and en-deavour of the school’s
students.

After this section Mr Buckley invited Sarah Cowley to the stage to present the Sports
trophies and Academy awards. In the final part of the celebration Mr. Watson announced the
winners of the evening’s top awards including the top team—this year won by the Senior
Chess team which finished 2nd in the Auckland Central Competition, 1st in the West
Auckland competition, 1st in the South Auckland competition and capped a remarkable year
with a 2nd place in the National finals. The evening was brought to a close when all attending
were invited to have dessert and mix and mingle with award winners in the hall.

Roskill Student Wins Gymsport NZ Medal

In a recent Junior assembly Year 9 student Madison Smith was formally congratulated for
her winning of a Bronze medal in last month’s Gymsport New Zealand National Trampoline
Championship held in Napier. She was competing on the Double Mini-trampoline against
gymnasts from all over the country. Madison qualified earlier this year for the National
Trampoline team and took part in the Australian Nationals in Sydney. At the MRGS Sports
awards she received colours for Gymnastics and Trampoline together with the award for
Senior Girls Trampolining Champion.

Episode 4 of Being Roskill Season 2 can be viewed here:

Episode 4 'Three Teams' (a.k.a. 'The Secret Affinity') is the final episode of Season 2. It
chronicles the unlikely meeting of three teams and the affinity between them. The NZ Rugby
Sevens team, the Waterview Tunnel team and the MRGS 1st 11 Football team. Although
seemingly different on the surface, all three teams in fact share secret affinities in terms of
their values and goals.

School Chess News

Our school chess teams have had their most successful year ever. Five MRGS chess teams
have battled throughout the year against other secondary schools around Auckland in the NZ
Chess Federation competition to see who the Auckland Champions are. After playing over
140 games up to two hours long, our Senior and Junior teams both qualified for the Auckland
Finals. Our Second Division senior team missed qualifying by just half a point. Our Senior
team finalists of Kalyan Todha, Kashyap Choudhary, Nicholas Power, Vali Fa'aea
placed 4th after 3 days of pitched battle. Also our Junior team of Joshua Simmons, Elvin
Zhang, Max Wu, Shinay Singh and Cathy Fan defeated Auckland Grammar School's top
Junior team – a portent for the future.

We also competed in the faster paced 30 minute games organised by ChessPower and we
won our first tournament in West Auckland in April, which gave us a place in the National
Finals. Top players who received medals were Kashyap Choudhary, Eric Chow, Nathan
McDougall, Shinay Singh, Max Wu and Sehej Juenja, as well as the top girl in the
tournament, Stella Xu. The MRGS team won the South Auckland regional ChessPower
tournament, narrowly defeating Papatoetoe High and Rosehill College. Top players were
Kashyap Choudhary, Daniel Morrin, Zi Yuan Tee, Nathan McDougall and Eric Chow.
Then on 11 September we attended the ChessPower National Finals. This was a tense battle
through the first eight rounds which took us to 4th place. But a superb performance in the
Visit of NZ Boxing Champion to MRGS
final round saw us see off Nelson College, Papatoetoe High School, St Andrew's College
(Christchurch) and our old rivals Christchurch Boys' High School, to take second place
behind our arch-rival Auckland International College. The names and reputations of these
schools is a reflection of the high quality of the competition. We have been third for the past
two years – 2nd place is a great achievement, with top players on the day being Eric Chow,
Elvin Zhang, Vali Fa'aea and Kashyap Choudhary. We missed our top player Kalyan
Todha, who unfortunately had to sit a practical physics exam on that day. The fact we could
still achieve such a significant result is a reflection of the strength and depth of skill in our
chess team across all the school years. We expect greater results in the future.

We are continuing our school competition to determine our school Junior, Girls, and Senior
Champions. Chess players meet every lunch-time in E1 for games and training this year and
into 2014 – we cater for all levels of chess players from beginners to the experienced. Come
along for fun, competition and the chance to represent your school at national level
competitions.

Tournament Week News

In the week before Senior Exams four of our Premier teams went to tournament week. This
event provides a a highly competitive finish to the season for these teams and gives them the
opportunity of playing against teams from around New Zealand.

The Premier Netball team played in Howick and won 4 out of 10 games. They finished in
21st position out of 32 teams, an improvement on last year.

The 1st XI Boys Football team went to Hamilton for their competition and won 3 out of 7
games. They finished in 14th position.

The 1st XI Girls Football team played in Papakura and won 5 out of 8 games. They won
their playoff match on penalties to finish in 13th position.

The Boys Basketball team competed on the North Shore. This was the first time the team
had entered this competition and they managed to beat teams graded above them and also
beat teams they had lost to during the season. They won 4 games and lost 4 games, finishing
in 12th position, the best result for all of the teams that went on tournament.

Hockey Turf Fundraising

MRGS Fundraising for the Hockey Turf and Sports Pavilion

The fundraising project for the Hockey Turf Redevelopment and the Sports Pavilion was
launched as part The MRGS Diamond Jubilee on Saturday 17th August. The Hockey Turf
Redevelopment is a $1.5 million dollar project to upgrade the turf into a water based turf.

The Hockey Turf project development subcommittee consists of Auckland Hockey
Association, Roskill Eden and Mt Eden Hockey Clubs and MRGS. This group has already
been very successful in obtaining $400,000 from the Auckland Council Central Facility
Partnership Committee.

The new fundraising display board complete with its thermometer is now on display outside
the school and will be updated as fundraising progresses.

Where to from here? You are all welcome to get involved in fundraising.
We now have $1.1 million to raise for the turf. MRGS also has plans to build a sports
pavilion which will be located between the Hockey turf and the Rugby fields so we have lots
of fundraising to do. The MRGS fundraising committee had its first meeting on the 22nd
August at the school. If you missed that meeting and still want to get involved please contact
Ella Kumar on Ella.Kumar@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz or Judith Bingham jcl.air@xtra.co.nz
or Marjet Pot on potgull@ihug.co.nz. We aim to make this fundraising fun so contact us and
support your children’s school.

If you have fabulous ideas for fundraising or know of companies who may wish to sponsor
aspects of the turf or sports pavilion then please contact the above people. We would
welcome such calls.
If you wish to make a donation to this project please make this direct to the school office or
post to:

All Blacks Training Visit

On September 9th 2013, 10 lucky MRGS rugby players along with 1st XV coaches Mr
Overton and Mr McGibbon had the once in a life time opportunity of attending a closed All
Blacks Training Clinic. MRGS was lucky to have this opportunity as only 120 players were
invited from the Auckland province. The clinic included players having the chance to work
alongside current All Blacks doing activities that were specific to their positions. Players
were also privileged to be in the presence of all four World Cup winning captains alongside
the trophies they had won (both 15-aside and 7-aside IRB World Cups). They then moved in
to their special groups and spent an hour gaining some great technical insight from some of
the world’s best players. At the end of the session they had the opportunity to get photos and

signatures from their rugby idols. Hopefully the players learnt a lot during this opportunity
and will one day represent the MRGS 1st XV and move on to higher honours in the future.

School Cross Country

After some concerns about potential rain in the days before the weather finally smiled on the
school recently and we had excellent conditions for the annual running of the Cross-Country
event. After morning lessons we had an early lunch and then the various year levels changed
for this great community event. Students gathered on the hockey turf before being released in
year groups to take on the local course through the environs of Roskill.

The first group to go was that of the championship event runners who completed the route in
fast times. After this the different groups made their way in a positive afternoon of exercise
and rivalry. Many ran the whole course others managed mixture of running and jogging but
they made it back to school in good spirits. Runners in each category gained points for their
house and the final house placings were: 1st Yellow, 2nd Orange, 3rd Green, 4th Red and 5th
Blue.

In the championship section Brian Dias was first in the Junior boys and Karishma Kumar
won the junior Girls. In the Intermediate section, Abishek Jeevan took first place amongst
the boys and Victoria Mulrennan took first place in the girls. The Senior Boys
championship was won by DeMaio Bury Vilela and Vandhana Tularam gained first place
in the Senior Girls after a close finish with Cherie Walpole, Vandhana winning by 1
second.

Term 3 Sports News

Term 3 has been exciting as well as busy for the Sports Department with most winter sports
finishing their competitions well. There have been highlights in many sports this season. Well
done to everyone for participating to a high standard and upholding an excellent level of
sportsmanship and fair play during their games.

Basketball

The highlight in Boys Basketball this season was the Under 17 A team who finished their
season in 3rd position in the Central competition. Superbly coached by Mr Buckley, the team
went through the regular season unbeaten with outstanding performances by Teiko Fonua in
particular. In the finals competition they suffered a couple of close losses to Marcellin and
One Tree Hill.
Football

The 1st XI Girls team had their best season in many years playing in the Central Senior A
Under 19 com-petition. They went through the regular season with 6 wins from 9 games and
scoring a whopping 31 goals. In the finals series they beat Kelston Girls in the quarter finals
and narrowly lost their semi final to Epsom Girls, despite playing their best game of the
season. The girls have been coached by Mr Morris and Mr Cluely, both giving up their own
time to come in and share their expertise with the team.

The 2nd XI Girls and 3rd XI Girls teams played in the same grade this year and both had
great seasons. The 2nd XI Girls coached by Miss Thomas, finished in 2nd position and only
conceded 3 goals all season. The 3rd XI Girls team coached by Hayden Couper, a Year 12
student, had a great start to the season however they eventually lost a couple of close matches
to finish 6th.

The Junior Boys team had a positive season in the 13B Central grade. They played the
majority of the year against strong Football schools such as MAGS and AGS and competed
well. They only lost 2 games throughout the whole season and many of these boys will be
pushing for places in the Football Academy next year. The team was coached by two student
coaches, Ravindra Prasad and Sunil Penumarthy and staff member Mr Green.

Lacrosse

We started our first Girls Lacrosse team this year who were coached by Ms Leman and Year
13 student Vaughan Thompson. The team played in the second division and came 8th
overall. They also entered the Auckland Secondary School one day competition and came 8th
as well. The stand out performer for the team was Kaaj Pala who picked the game up this
year and is a natural goal scorer.

Hockey

Undoubtedly the top performance this year from our Hockey teams has come from the Under
15 Girls. Once again they have gone through the season in the top grade for their age group
and shown that Mount Roskill Grammar teams can compete with the best and win. Needing a
win against Diocesan they could only manage a 0-0 draw which meant that they finished
second, the same result as last year. They went through the season with no losses and only
conceded 6 goals, the lowest in the competition. The team was coached by Barry Bryan.

Rugby

There were two highlights this year in Rugby, the 1st XV making the Championship grade
and coming within a whisker of making the semi finals. The second outstanding achievement
came from the Girls 10-a-side team who only lost 2 games all season. Toru Arakura was a
revelation for the team, scoring at least two tries per game and leading the team well from the
First Five position.

The 1st XV came within one point of making the semi finals of the 1B competition and lived
to rue a couple of games early in the season that cost them much needed points later on.
Coached by Mr Overton, Mr McGibbon and Mr Stephenson and with Mr Hall as
manager the team were well supported on and off the field. They now have a great launching
pad for an assault on the competition next year and hopefully going at least one step further.

Rugby League

It is fair to say the team started the season slowly, losing many games by close margins to
teams that they should have beaten. The coach, Mr Taunga was frequently seen pulling his
hair out with frustration, however, the team finally started showing their promise and
qualified in the Bowl section. They played some excellent Rugby League and man-aged to
come from 4th position to make the final. The final was played at Mt Smart No. 2 and the
team trailed 0-14 early in the second half. Suddenly the team burst into life scoring three
quick tries, however they could not convert any of them, meaning they lost 12-14 to James
Cook. Congratulations to the team for persevering through a string of losses to make the best
of their final few games and nearly steal the Bowl. Thank you to Mr Taunga and Ms Tokley
for their coaching and management of the team.

Badminton

This year we had over 20 teams competing in the Auckland competition during Term 2. The
organisation of all teams is handled superbly by Mr Dix who also spends several nights at
Auckland Badminton looking after teams. The Tuesday and Wednesday Girls teams won
their competitions and the A Team who play on Friday nights have done enough to get
themselves back in the top level of Auckland competition next year.

Netball

The Netball season is drawing to a close with most teams not performing to their potential
despite having some strong individuals in each team. The two Academy teams have played
some good Netball, with the Year 9 team leading the way and teaching the older girls that
having a good attitude and regularly attending training directly impacts on the results you get
on a Saturday game. The Academy teams have been well coached this year by Miss Willcox
and Ms Te Whiu.

Cross Country

The annual school Cross Country took place on a sunny and hot Thursday afternoon in Week
4. The event went back to being a full school compulsory activity with Year 13’s even
required to run the 3.2km course around the local streets. All students who crossed the line
earned points towards their House and the contributed towards the overall standings. The next
newsletter will feature the winners from each age group and any records that were broken.
Congratulations to everyone who took part and well done on the excellent House spirit on
display throughout the event.

House Competitions

Term 2 has had three competitions played between the Houses, Netball, Volleyball and
Touch. All of the competitions were limited to Junior students only with the aim of getting
them more involved in their House. Yellow House won the Netball, Orange House won the
Volleyball and Blue House won the Touch competitions. The current standings after 6 events
are: Orange in 5th place, Red and Blue 3rd, Green 2nd and Yellow in 1st. With 4 events
remaining this year the shield is far from being decided.

Tournament Week

This year we are sending four teams away on their annual tournaments that take place in the
first week of September. All the best to the 1st XI Boys and Girls Football teams, Under 19A
Boys Basketball team and the Premier Netball team with their competitions in Auckland and
Hamilton.

Adventure Racing

The MRGS Adventure Racing Team were involved in a range of activities around Auckland
that were a combination of Outdoor Pursuits in an Amazing Race style competition. First task
was to navigate to Western Springs for some Orienteering. Next up was Mountain biking
around an Urban Track followed by some cycling challenges. We then had to get to the
Onehunga Lagoon where Kayaking, problem solving and navigation were combined for a
difficult challenge which luckily did not involve anyone falling in as the water was freezing.
The most difficult challenge was kayaking across the lagoon wearing a bucket as a hat not
only was a little difficult but also it did not make much of a fashion statement. The day
concluded with a session Rock Climbing at Clip and Climb. The challenge was to climb as
many walls as possible in 40mins. It was a fantastic day and we managed to finish as the
second Girls Team in Auckland and 10th out of the 20 teams that took part.

MRGS Success in Auckland Trampoline

Zone Championships. They were fierce competitors and placed 1st in Division One.

The team members were Scott Welch, Jessie Woods, Bart Uy, Sha-heen Khan and Shuaib
Khan.

The team will now go through to compete in the Northern Regional Championship.
Sports Academies (June 2013)
The academy teams are now fully immersed in their seasons. After long pre-season build-ups,
the teams are now all having good success. Both the Hockey Boys and Girls teams have
qualified for their U15A grade competitions. The Football team is currently mid-table in their
quest to play A grade. Both Netball teams are playing well in their competitions. A special
mention must go to Netball Intermediate 1 team who won the North Harbour Pre-season
Tournament B grade competition.

Results to Date:

 Hockey Boys: Versus Sacred Heart 3 – 1 win
    Versus Auckland Grammar 7 – 1 win
    Hockey Girls: Versus Avondale 15 – 0 win
    Versus MAGS 4 – 0 win

    NH Pre-season tournament 4 wins / 1 draw
 Netball Y9: Saturday Grading Rounds 3 wins
    NH Pre-season tournament 3 wins / 1 loss

Other notable highlights from the academy results — The Girls Hockey Academy team beat
Avondale 15-0 in their first game to sound out a warning to the other teams. The Boys team
had a competitive match against Sacred Heart with MRGS eventually winning 3-1. In their
next game against Auckland Grammar they comfortably won 7-1 with Mayur Ram scoring 3
goals. The Boys Football Academy team had a tough start to the season losing 0-6 to MAGS,
however they bounced back with a gutsy draw and win over two Avondale teams. Lance
Stubbings, Jordan Tahana, and Muhammad Hakim have been starring for the team. The
two Netball Academy teams have competed well in their grading games and are on track to
be playing in a high grade this year. Well done to all of the players and coaches for making
the hard work done in preseason training count during their first few games.
At this stage we would like to thank all the coaches of our Academy teams as well as the
Libbell Group who are proud sponsors of our Sports Academies for 2013.

Pukekohe Exchange

On Tuesday 25th June, 13 of our sports teams took part in the annual exchange with
Pukekohe High School. Our students journeyed to the school and were warmly welcomed by
a powhiri. The respective teams than went away to take part in the matches . Hockey, Netball,
Rugby, Football and Basketball codes all competed in hard fought but sporting encounters
throughout the day. The Academy Hockey girls team had a good win—3-1; the 1st XI
football boys won 1-0 and the basketball U17 team had an impressive victory by 99—39. Our
Academy teams in the range of codes made a good showing but overall Pukekohe’s teams
proved too strong on the day and achieved 6 wins to our 4 with another 3 being close drawn
games. At the end of the day the students from both schools met to share a late lunch, hear
speeches from team leaders, and discuss the ‘battles’ of the day. As ever this trip to Pukekohe
provided challenges and a chance to share the great sporting spirit of both schools.

NZ Trampoline Team
Madison Smith (Year 9) has recently qualified for the New Zealand Trampoline team. She
will be competing in the Australian Nationals in Sydney from 7th July to the 18th July. We
wish her all the best in her training and build up to this event.

1st XV Team Building Trip to the Far North

Players from the 1stXV squad, coaches and support staff had a successful team building trip
to the Far North over the recent holiday. Their accommodation, travel expenses and
arrangements were supported by a variety of individuals and groups so that this excellent
team of young Roskill sportsmen could strengthen their sporting relationships and build
momentum for the coming rugby season. At all times they were a credit to the school by their
behaviour and the respect they accorded their hosts and the venues they visited both sporting
and recreational. Highlights were a dynamic training session at Kaitaia College, visits from
Daniel Faleolo (ex Auckland Rugby) to give encouragement and support, a hangi at Ngawha
Springs, a visit to the Kauri Gum museum at Dargaville, runs up the Te Paki Giant Sand
Dunes and a visit to Waipoua Forest. At this venue the students were able to view the 2,000
year old Tane Mahuta – the largest Kauri tree left standing in New Zealand. This was an
unforgettable experience and made all the more so by their response to it – the boys
performed a haka to Tane Mahuta and as Mr Nick Tuialii (organiser of the trip ) commented
“the voices of the boys echoed through the forest .. a tourist cried at the emotion of the
performance and the setting.” Throughout their trip the students enjoyed the aroha of the
people of the Manukau valley.

Term 1 Sports News

Volleyball

The Senior Girls team had a successful season finishing third in the Central Zone. The team
were led ably by Rosalina Toleafoa. Thank you very much to Fale Malifa for coaching the
girls this year.

Dragonboating

At the end of March on Lake Pupuke our Dragon boat team competed at the Auckland
Regional Secondary School Championships. After a difficult season due to a number of
students being involved in many different sports and activities limiting training opportunities
they fought our way through qualifying to make the highly competitive plate final. Despite
the wind picking up through the day, in the final they managed to produce their fastest time
of the day. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and the team were beaten into 4th place by 0.5
seconds. The girls were a little disappointed but they they raced well and put a great effort in.
Overall it has been a great season; as their coach says “it’s been a lot of fun, the team has
improved their fitness and a number of new paddlers have learnt good technique which will
help us go faster in the future”.

Cricket

The 1st XI Boys Cricket team had a mixed term, however this was not the case for some
individuals in the team. Karan Banker started the year strongly scoring two big centuries
(184 not out and 163) in all competitions and taking wickets to aid the bowling attack. Also
Kashyap Choudhary’s bowling proved to be valuable after a 5-wicket haul and some very
tight spells against good opposition batsmen. A mention has to be made for Oyishik
Chakraborty who stepped up to play 1st XI cricket this season and has been a frequent
opener and solid foundation for the MRGS middle order.

The 2nd XI will be hoping they can continue their excellent form when the season restarts
after winning their last 4 games. Shayne Quadros deserves special mention after hitting 93
for the 3rd XI and after being promoted to the 2nd XI scored a century the next week. Both
the Junior Boys and the 3rd XI deserve a mention for their attitude in training even if the
results weren’t going their way. The 1st XI Girls team enjoyed a good season and finished it
off with a hugely successful tournament played at Keith Hay Park in which the team showed
great team spirit, resilience and ability to finish the season on a high.

8M8’s

Term 1 saw the launch of 8M8’s, an exciting new social sports programme after school on
Mondays. After a lunchtime launch with demonstrations of the sports, led by professional
coaches and giveaways from The Edge Roadrunners, the first actual session was after school
the same day as the launch and proved successful with students participating in a relaxed and
active environment. 8M8’s aims to provide informal sporting opportunities to students who
do not play regular sport for the school. The emphasis is on having fun with friends and being
physically active students. The programme continues throughout Term 2 with two different
sports played each Monday after school.

Academies

Preseason training for the Hockey, Football and Netball Academy teams has been
progressing well. All of the teams are looking forward to another good season and qualifying
in the top grade for their age groups.

Mahurangi Exchange

Roskill’s Premier Teams took part in the annual exchange with Mahurangi College. This
traditional fixture heralds the start of the Winter sports season and gives both schools the
opportunity to field their squads in a variety of disciplines in advance of the term two inter-
schools programme. Mahurangi travelled from Warkworth and were welcomed to the school
with a haka powhiri at which team members and coaches spoke with anticipation of the
events to come. In perfect conditions our 1st XI Boys’ and Girls’ football and hockey, 1st XV
rugby, Senior Girls volleyball, Premier netball and U19 Boys basketball took on the
counterparts from Mahurangi. The competition was fierce but fair, and at the close of the day
Roskill were victorious by 5 wins to 2. After the on-field competitiveness both schools’
players and coaches enjoyed lunch together and a closing ceremony of thanks and
congratulations when Roskill regained possession of the commemorative shield as a result of
their success. We then said farewell to our opponents as they set off back north.

Results vs Mahurangi College:

    Rugby - MRGS won 43-5
    Volleyball Girls - MRGS won 2-0
    Football Boys - MRGS won 7-0
    Hockey Girls - Mahurangi won 1-0
    Hockey Boys - MRGS won 6-0
    Netball - Mahurangi won 44-21
    Basketball Boys - MRGS won 58-30
    Football Girls - Draw 1-1

Dragonboating

Sparkling Performances in School Cricket
Two of our Senior Cricketers have had memorable performances in recent weeks—achieving
match-winning scores at 1st and 2nd XI levels. Regular 1st XI player Karan Banker has
been on top form—against Westlake Boys he was 184 not out and took Roskill single-
handedly to a 244 total to beat the North shore side. In his next game against Papatoetoe he
was successful with the ball taking 9 wickets in addition to scoring 163 as the 1stXI chased
down the oppositions 2nd innings lead of 55 to achieve an outright victory.

In the Senior A Competition Shayne Quadros followed up a 93 for the 3rd XI with a century
for the 2nd XI in their victory over Botany Downs. The Roskill side amassed 321 runs in
their 30 overs. There were other notable scores of 57 by Alif Barolio and a rapid-fire 69 from
the 32 balls faced by Zaheen Ceddique.

Good Result For MRGS First XI
Mount Roskill's first XI played host to Long Bay 1st XI, a team who have also been
struggling to find form in the early part of the season. The first XI's last few games have been
very up and down, a fantastic win against Westlake Boys 2nd on Friday 8th Feb, left the team
full of confidence, but in their next two matches they failed to show the same ability,
slumping to two defeats in a Twenty20 and a 45 over game. However the lads were keen to
sort things out and through the week worked hard in training and despite the midweek loss
were looking forward to the weekend match. MRGS bowled first and after Long Bay 1st XI
got off to a quick start, the wickets started to come and luck started to favour us. The match
remained evenly matched throughout until Vaughn came on and bowled a blinding spell, 9
overs, 4 maidens, 3 wickets and all for just 15 runs. This was a real turning point and after the
other spinners came on and cleaned up the tail, momentum was on our side. After a quick
turn around and no lunch being taken, it hadn't arrived by this point oweing to the speed at
which we got through the overs, our opening batsmen got stuck in. A solid and undramatic
start gave us a platform until the first of our wickets fell, not long after we were two and three
down but the run rate was good and we didnt look troubled, eventually we crossed the line 4
down meaning MRGS 1st XI won by 6 wickets in what can only be described as a very good
team performance, not too much drama too worry about but everyone contributed. However
tougher oppossition lurk around the corner and there will be no let up in training as the boys
try to build on this result and push on to the top of the table.

A Tough Introduction
Mount Roskill's junior cricket XI had a tough first match against Mt Albert Jnr 2's at Mt
Albert Grammar on pitch number 3. Batting first and with only one training session together
as a team, to expect complete unity and understanding from the batsmen would have been
outrageous. That said some of their running could have been a little sharper along with their
calling, but that's something for the training ground and the understanding between batsmen
only comes with time playing together. A score of 60 was posted by our boys, with a few
contributions of around 15, but the team knew they had a challange on their hands with the
quick outfield and the low target set. That said, after a quick break they set to work on the
challenge at hand and made a real meal of it. Our fielding was sharp and enthusiastic and we
put some early pressure on their openers and were rewarded with an early wicket.
Unfortunately we were unable to keep pressure on and they then picked up momentum and
some short bowling being well played let them rack up the runs. The team never stopped
though and were rewarded with a couple more wickets late in the game, however it wasn't
enough and MAGS got over the line comfortably in the end.

Athletics Carnival

On Thursday 14th February the school held its annual Athletics Carnival. Students took part
for their houses in an array of sports from traditional field and track events to tug of war.
They circulated around the school fields and the turf in year level/house groups taking turns
to compete and try out their athletic skills. In addition to the competition and friendly rivalry
there was also the carnival atmosphere of the beautiful summer’s day to frame all the activity.
Our new Year 9 students got fully into the spirit of the day taking on the familiar and
unfamiliar physical challenges with great spirit and admirable persistence!

Over the next few days particular championship events will also be held to test and select the
aspiring school representatives for this year’s athletics season.
