We would like to congratulate the Marlborough Chamber
of Commerce for the partnership we’ve now built up over a
 number of years.
Every year these awards honour local companies, their people
and their extraordinary achievements. The awards showcase
success, putting the spotlight on our deserved winners, and
helping build stronger networks and raise business profiles.
The real reward for businesses that have entered is the process.
Previous entrants often talk about how the awards helped them
really focus on their business – identifying opportunities and
strengths, and finding ways to build on them.
Here at Westpac, we’re committed to doing the same in our
own business, and helping drive and encourage people to invest
in both the Marlborough and New Zealand economies. We do
this by combining our expertise, services and products with our
 biggest asset – our people.

Business Class Tablets have
 finally arrived
 By Lee Harper
The evolution of true business class tools has begun.
Windows tablets slowly started to appear in large numbers late
last year. There have been major improvements in both the
operating system with Windows 8.1 (which works brilliantly for
touch devices) and the processors, which are more powerful
and less battery hungry. The concept of having a tablet that
can be both your desktop device as well as your mobile work
tool has finally arrived. No longer do you need a PC and a
separate tablet or laptop, but now one device can do everything
you need for work. These new tablets have the same type of
processor (Intel Core i5) as found in most PC’s and Desktops.
They can happily run your Office applications, allow you to
plug them into projectors, and also attach USB devices. You can
also attach external monitors so that your tablet can sport one
or even two 22” screens whilst you are at your desk. This is a
far cry from the features of the average Android or iPad tablet
which doesn’t have any USB functionality!
We so often hear of businesses that have Android or iPad
devices and want to do more with them. The ability to run a full
version of Microsoft Office, your accounting package and even
demanding applications such as Photoshop, is all achievable on
these modern Windows tablets. Synchronizing calendars and
 e-mail is also very straightforward.
Combine a tablet with Cloud Services and your office can be phones, which are being released and bring new work place

may be exempt from tax.
In regard to motor vehicles your company has four options for
reimbursing the employee for business use of a private vehicle,
with reimbursements/allowances based on:
1. Actual expenditure incurred
2. A reasonable estimate of actual expenditure
3. Published mileage rates, as long as they represent a

4. Rates published by IRD (currently 77c per kilometre for the
     2013 income year).
Records for the business/private use of the vehicle must be kept
to verify the claim. Whichever option is chosen the employee
should keep a log book of the travel he/she does.
The following methods can be used to show that the payment is
