Good afternoon to you all and welcome to the Goldstar
Ground for this BetVictor Isthmian League North fixture
v Hullbridge Sports.
I wish a very warm welcome to our visitors for this league
fixture and of course to the match officials Messrs. Mr
Eugene Robinson, Mr Ashley Butler and Mr James. I hope
our hospitality meets expectations.
It’s been a tough few days since our last home game. It
seems an age since our last home fixture (4th January) and
a well-deserved score draw against Soham Town Rangers.
To come back from 2-0 down in the very last few minutes showed true character of the
players. Last Saturday was really an away day blues as we struggled against a very good
Bury Town, but we certainly made up for it Monday evening with a spirited performance
against Aveley.
OK so we were not able to pick up points at either fixture, but the level and performance in
the latter game shows we are still in there fighting.
Keep the faith, we’ll show our metal and results will come our way soon, I am confident of
that.
It seems incredible but there are only 8 more home games until the end of the season, so we
have plenty of opportunity to make good. I am looking forward to the ‘run in’. We’ll be OK.

MIDWEEK ROUND-UP ISTHMIAN NORTH MIDWEEK ROUND UP

Points-wise, it wasn’t a good weekend/Monday for us, with the two defeats,
conceding eight goals while scoring four to increase our negative goal
difference by four to minus 19.
Other results of the sides around us become more important with each
week, and last Tuesday evening saw five of those teams in action and
purely looking from a selfish viewpoint, it wasn’t too bad a night for us!
12th placed (and today’s visitors) raced into a two goal lead against Bury
Town, only to be pegged back before regaining the advantage, but having
to settle for a share of the points to move onto 23 points.
13th placed Cambridge City were without a game, while Witham, in 14th
spot were put to the sword by Canvey Island who rattled in 7 goals to move
them into a top ten spot.
15th placed Soham Town Rangers were the night’s only winners from the
bottom half, seeing off Basildon United at Julius Martins Lane 3-0 while
AFC Sudbury in 16th spot played on Wednesday evening, travelling to
Grays Athletic… unfortunately after this programme went to press.
Brentwood Town, in 17th looked to have gained a point at home to
Heybridge Swifts, but the visitors grabbed a last minute winner to go top of
the table and leave their hosts still in 17th .
Basildon United in 18th , as mentioned above, were beaten 3-0 to leave
them just a point above ourselves but with two games in hand.
Below us, Romford in bottom spot, were due to host title favourites Maldon
& Tiptree last night (Friday), and checking elsewhere you can find out
the result of that match if it was played! They started the week eight points
adrift of ourselves but with six games in hand and a -11 goal difference on
us.
It’s all very tight around the bottom of the table and if ever we needed
your support, it’s from now to the end of the season!

Welcome to today’s fixture against Hulbridge Sports who, as I write this, look to be
securing a vital win at home against Bury which no doubt will be a real confidence
booster for them.
Despite our two recent losses against Bury and Aveley there is a lot to be positive
about. At Bury I felt we competed for large spells, but unfortunately they were
better in either box than us and that is where it counts. We were relatively pleased
with our overall performance, but our mistakes are being punished at present and
this is making obtaining results very difficult.
Aveley away, a game that as a Manager you just know will be challenging. Aveley
dominated Bury the previous week and had a nice Saturday off to prepare for our
visit after having their scheduled weekend game fall foul of the weather so it was
a game we knew would be difficult. I cannot praise our players highly enough
however, they picked themselves up from a Derby defeat at Bury to deliver a
performance that I’m sure made the travelling fans proud. On the night, we

was the best performance of the season and both Andy and I

were proud of the players for the performance, particularly given the challenge of
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
two games in three days. This positive performance should give our players
confidence that we can compete with anyone in this league and I am certain that
we are so close to turning that corner. I urge you to stick by this group because
they are all giving their all for the cause and there is a developing togetherness in
the group that I know is going to bear fruit, we hope that starts today………

NON LEAGUE PAPER COLUMN #1

The introduction of VAR is causing a significant stir at the top levels of the
game, but how has the launch of sin-bins in Non-League faired this season?
The FA trialled the scheme, where a referee can temporarily dismiss a player
for ten minutes as punishment for dissent, across 31 grassroots leagues
during the two campaigns prior to this one.
During that time, 25 reported a reduction in dissent with a 38 per cent fall in
the competitions that took part in the pilot, with a survey finding the majority of
1,500 participants wanted the sin-bin rule to become permanent.
Following the feedback, the FA chose to implement the change up to Step 5
of the National League System from this season and figures so far have
revealed it’s having a positive impact.
By the end of November, in the North West Counties League, there were 95
recorded instances of dissent that resulted in a player being dismissed

At this stage last season, a total of 246 yellow cards had been shown for the

saw midfielder Harvey Whyte sent to the sin-bin as punishment for
sarcastically applauding a decision by the referee when Vics visited
Longridge for a Premier Division fixture in October.
Elliot Pond scored the winning goal for the hosts while Whyte watched from
the touchline. Wilkes believes his players are even less likely to err as a
result.
It is a view shared by Joe Doran, his counterpart at Bootle. Ryan Jones was
the first goalkeeper to fall victim of the new rule during the Bucks’ defeat at
Runcorn Town back in August.
However he returned wearing an outfield shirt, having to wait for a stoppage
in play before putting his gloves back on.
Doran said: “When it happens to one of your players, it’s definitely an effective
deterrent. He’s 6ft 5in and we put him up top until there was a throw-in.
“I’m all for nipping it in the bud, but dissent has always been a bookable
offence, it’s just referees have been too scared to caution people for it.
“This feels like a halfway house.”

NON LEAGUE PAPER COLUMN #2

The managers probably won’t thank us for saying it but it’s always great to
see Non-League talent move up into the Football League.
We’ve seen a host of players make the step up just in this past week – all with
their own stories to tell.
Josh March has worked his way up the divisions with Alvechurch and, after
hitting 24 goals in 27 games for Leamington, is moving up to League Two with
Forest Green.
March told us in last week’s paper of how Non-League football has prepared
him for the step-up – one he wasn’t ever sure he’d get a crack at a few years
ago.
Reeco Hackett-Fairchild quickly made an impression with Bromley during this
campaign and he’s been snapped up by Portsmouth.
Then Barnet’s Jack Taylor is stepping up to Peterborough United – a club well
known for mining Non-League over the years with great success – for a fee of
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
£500,000 which could @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
rise to £1 million with add-ons.

throughout Non-League football.
Of course, for the managers it’s not great timing. They’ve lost important
players at an important part of the season. It’s not as straightforward as just
going out and handpicking a replacement.
It does, however, reflect well on them and their clubs. Non-League football
thrives and survives on giving young footballers the opportunity to showcase
their talent and the platform to push onto the League.
Are there more footballers just waiting for their chance? You can be sure of it.
Matlock Town have had their ground broken into for the third time in three
months.
They certainly aren’t the only Non-League club to suffer at the hands of
mindless thieves.
It is soul destroying for the hard-working volunteers that put in all the hours
they can to their club only to have to clear up the mess.
Unfortunately many Non-League clubs and grounds are soft targets. Often
tucked away and with alcohol and other stock, or the prospect of cash left
inside – they are an appealing proposition.
Clubs no doubt have insurance but the costs of additional security only add
an extra burden.

SEASIDER - PHIL GRIFFITHS
It makes a pleasant change to welcome a
club to the Goldstar ground for the very first
time - our visitors are enjoying their first
season of Isthmian League football and
indeed won the reverse fixture 3-1 back in
October, but while they have been playing
senior football since the eighties and
competing in the FA Cup and Vase since the
nineties, our paths have never crossed in any
competition, other than this season. A fuller
history can be found elsewhere in this issue
but on behalf of the ‘Seasiders’ we offer our guests a warm welcome,
hopefully we will be stingy with the points and not give them any, but
otherwise we hope you have a pleasant afternoon by the seaside.
We can’t hide the fact that we are in a bit of trouble at the wrong end of the
table and if results don’t improve we will be making a return to step 5 football
next season. It would be a disaster for the club after all the hard work that
has gone into getting us here, but reality bites. Personally, I am confident we
can make the escape despite bottom club Romford having a seemingly
bottomless pit with which to attract players. If we win our games we survive,
simple as that, and today is our biggest game of the season to date.
We have, without doubt, the best supporters in the division - and hopefully
they are out in force again this afternoon, You were brilliant at Bury last
week, guys and gals, and once again at Aveley on Monday evening. Playing
two of the top four sides in three days, away from home, was a tall ask. We
were second best on Saturday, but on Monday we left Parkside feeling we
were unfortunate to come away with nothing. But no good crying, we are
where we are so it’s heads down and go again this afternoon. It’s only
Maldon & Tiptree next up for us… 1st, 2nd & 4th all away in two weeks! It’s
all down to us guys, let’s get behind the side once again…

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@THE VISITORS Records show that Hullbridge United Football Club was formed by a group of local men, fronted by the then proprietor of the Anchor Inn, a Mr. A. W. Moss. He owned a room behind the pub known as Buff’s Hall. This was where the club held its first meeting. A Mr. Brown generously allowed the club to play on his land, on the corner of Pooles Lane and Long Lane. Hullbridge United’s first colours were Green and Gold quartered shirts, White shorts and Green socks, which, by an amazing coincidence, were the same colours as those on the flag flying outside the Anchor Inn! Affiliating to the Essex County FA in 1947, Hullbridge United entered the Southend & District League for the upcoming 1947-48 season. 1950-51 saw Hullbridge United reach their first Cup Finals. In the Section ‘C’ Final of the Southend Charity Competition, United beat Maxwell Sports 4-1. Four weeks later, in the Southend & District League’s French Cup, Hullbridge faced Rochford Athletic but, somewhat unluckily, lost the Final by three goals to four. After six seasons of Second Division football, 1951-52 saw Hullbridge finally gain promotion – and they did it in style, winning both the Championship and the French Cup. In the final, Hullbridge defeated the reserves of Great Wakering Rovers by three goals to nil. In all, the club played 28 matches that season, scoring an amazing 141 goals. The summer of 1953 saw the club change name to Hullbridge Sports. After a few poor seasons, times improved for the club when they won the 1956-57 Third Division Championship and the League’s Shaw Cup. They finished five points clear of Canvey Island Sports in the League and saw off Victory Athletic reserves 3-2 after extra time in the Cup Final. Suffering relegation at the end of the 1958-59 season, Sports’ stay in the Third Division lasted but four seasons as, in 1962-63, ‘Bridge won promotion as runner-up in the newly named Second Division with a dramatic final day victory to ensure promotion on goal average. Drawing 4-4 at home to Southwick Rovers, ‘Bridge scored three goals in the final fifteen minutes to gain a 7-4 victory and promotion. Another double was achieved during the 1965-66 season when Hullbridge won the First Division Championship and Section ’C’ of the Southend Charity Competition – beating Southchurch Rovers 3-0 in a replay after a 2-2 draw. A respectable fifth place finish was achieved in the Premier Division the following season, along with being French Cup finalists. 1968-69 saw Hullbridge finish bottom of the Premier Division but just three seasons later the club regained their Premier Division status, finishing runner-up to Canvey Island Amateur FC at the end of the 1971-72 season. Good cup runs that year saw the club reach the semi-final of the Ramuz Cup and the Fourth Round of the Essex Junior Cup. In the late 1970s the club decided it wanted it’s own ground. Negotiations with Rochford Council proved successful and the club took control of 16.5 acres of farmland in Lower Road (at the top of Coventry Hill), with the club moving during 1980. Transformation of the site was slow, with the clubhouse not officially opened until 1983.
THE VISITORS The end of the 1979-80 saw Sports put six goals past the Southend Estuary ‘keeper to win Section ’B’ of the Southend Charity Competition. A move up to the newly formed Southend & District Alliance in 1982 found the club wanting. Finishes of sixth and eighth and First Round knockouts in the League Cup wasn’t exactly what the club had hoped for. The only bright spot was reaching the 1982-83 Southend Charity Shield Final, although they lost 0-4 to Rayleigh Town. Nevertheless, again, looking for a higher standard of football, Sports then joined the Essex Olympian League for the 1984-85 season. They immediately won promotion after finishing third in the Second Division. At the end of the weather-hit 1987-88 season, Hullbridge (now in the Second Division again) brought home the Essex Intermediate League Cup, beating First Division Benfleet in the Final, held at the old New Writtle Street ground of Chelmsford City FC. After a 1-1 extra time draw, courtesy of a Mark Wood goal, Sports went into the replay 12 days later having played five League matches in between! However, after a goal-less 120 minutes, Sports won 5-4 on penalties. Looking for a further climb up the non-league ladder, Hullbridge made improvements to the ground during 1989 so it passed the grade for senior football. 1990 saw the Essex County FA grant the club senior status and so the club joined the Essex Senior League for the 1990-91 season. Matt Petre had the honour of scoring the club’s first goal in senior football when, on 25th August 1990, in the club’s first match of the Essex Senior League season, he scored Sport’s only goal in a 1-3 defeat by visitors Stansted, in front of a 163 crowd. At the end of their first season, the club finished in a respectable 12th place. The new floodlights were put to good use during the 1999-2000 season when, after seven cup- ties, the youth team reached the Third Round (last 64) of the FA Youth Cup. Visitors Blackburn Rovers won the tie 6-0 in front of a crowd of over 800. After taking over the managers hot seat during February 2006, Enrico Tiritera oversaw a gradual improvement in the club’s fortunes on the pitch. The 2008-09 season showed a good improvement for the club and they attained their highest number of points (41) over a 30-match programme. The club also reached the Quarter-finals of the East Anglian Cup for the first time. In 2009-10 Hullbridge reached the Quarter-finals of the Essex Senior Cup, again for the first time, before losing narrowly 0-1 to Football League side Dagenham & Redbridge. The 2010-11 season saw Sports reach their first Cup Final as a senior club, the County FA’s Tolleshunt D’Arcy Memorial Cup. Unfortunately, Sports were beaten 1-2 by Braintree Town. Dan Braney and Mark Bliss took over the reins from Enrico Tiritera, who departed the club in March 2013. In their first full season, 2013-14, Dan and Mark guided the team to their best ever FA Vase Cup run, reaching the Fourth Round (last 32), before being beaten 1-3 by eventual winners Sholing FC. It was unfortunate that the club had to travel to Southampton for the fixture on a wet Tuesday evening in January. The team under Braney and Bliss took the new record of points that had been achieved in the 2008/09 season, finishing ninth with 53 points from a 38 game season, but the icing on the cake was winning the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy, the first ever silverware as a senior club, beating Haringey Borough 1-0 in the final, Michael Edgar scoring the only goal.
THE VISITORS Mark Bliss took sole charge of the team during the 2014/15 season and was joined by coach Steve Tapley. Between them they took the club to its highest ever league position and points tally, finishing fourth in the Essex Senior League with 71 points and 73 goals along the way. With yet another Fourth Round FA Vase run, only losing away to Flackwell Heath FC. Mark and Steve decided to step down from the management of the mens senior side for the 2015/16 season and Hullbridge appointed its youngest ever management team installing Rob Hodgson as the new First Team Manager along with Aaron Hunwicks as the new Coach. In their first season (2015/16) Rob Hodgson and Aaron Hunwicks took the club to new FA Cup heights by making Hullbridge Sports history and reaching the Second Qualifying Round, where they were unfortunately beaten by Grays Athletic of the Ryman Premier Division. It was a last 32 exit again in the FA Vase equalling previous records and demonstrating the FA Vase consistency shown from previous seasons. In their second season (2016/17) running the First Team Rob Hodgson and Aaron Hunwicks found life more difficult as the side finished 11th in the Essex Senior League and disappointing early exits from most of the cup competitions, but they did take the side to the second Tollshunt D'Arcy Memorial Cup Final in successive seasons, but were unfortunately beaten again by Heybridge Swifts FC. Rob Hodgson and Aaron Hunwicks continued in the hot seat at the start of the 2017/18 season, but early exits from the FA Cup, Essex County Cup and poor league form saw an emotional farewell after the FA Vase victory over Wembley FC at Lower Road. Rob stayed for a short while to play for new manager Darren Manning, but Aaron left the club that had been his home since 2012 for pastures new. New manager Darren Manning had one main objective after taking over and that was to keep the club in the Essex Senior League and he managed to achieve this finally finishing 15th (out of 21), but unfortunately Hullbridge exited the FA Vase again under Darren in the last 32 away at Tring FC. 2018/19 saw Darren Manning's first full season at the helm and his side were playing at the newly renamed Ryan's Heating Stadium at Lower Road. Darren and number two James Wakeling start the 2018/19 campaign in the Essex Senior League. In the first major cup competition of the 2018/19 season, Hullbridge went out of the FA Cup in the Preliminary Round away at Newmarket Town FC (2-1) and they didn’t have much joy in the other cup competitions in Darren’s first season, exiting all the other big completions in a 6 week period, as they lose in the FA Vase (Newport Pagnell Town FC 0-2), followed the BBC Essex Senior Cup (Hoddesdon Town FC 5-1), the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy (Stansted 0-3) and the BBC Essex Senior Cup (Coggeshall Town FC 1-2), but they make the Semi Final of the Tolleshunt D'Arcy Memorial Trophy losing to Brightlingsea Regent of the Bostik League (5-1). In the league Darren and James overtook the previous management teams on the league points total achieving a total of 87 points and not only making Hullbridge history for the points total, but also by winning the Essex Senior League and being promoted to the Isthmian League for the first time in the clubs 29 year history.

BURY TOWN 4 - 1 FELIXSTOWE & WALTON UTD
Defeat for the Seasiders in local derby
The Seasiders returned home from West Suffolk with nothing to show for their efforts,
following a 4-1 loss at Bury Town.
Bury were good value for their win, taking an early lead through Joe White, back in the side
after long-term injury, before Cemal Ramadan converted a twice-taken penalty to make it
2-0 in the 44th minute, Ramadan added his second, and Bury's third, in the 64th minute,
sweeping home from close range after being teed up by Ross Crane, before substitute
Emmanuel Machaya cheekily converted an 88th minute penalty. George Clarke netted a
90th minute consolation, via yet another penalty, for the well-beaten Seasiders.
This defeat, which saw Bury complete a league double and a return to winning ways
following three successive defeats, leaves Felixstowe in trouble at the other of the table,
second from bottom. They have only won four league games all season, and they face a
tough trip to Aveley on Monday night.
Bury started brightly and Ipswich Town loanee Tommy Smith, screwed a 20-yarder high
and wide after just three minutes. The Blues took the lead in the seventh minute, following
the Seasiders' failure to clear a free-kick pumped into their box by Ross Crane. Keeper
Jack Spurling ventured out of his six-yard box but to deal with the cross, home striker Ollie
Hughes and defender Dan Davis contested a high ball before the rebound fell kindly for
White, who slotted home into an unguarded net from eight yards out. The Seasiders had
their share of possession in the first half, but rarely troubled home keeper Dan Barden,
although they did have appeals for a penalty turned down on 12 minutes, when Armani
Schaar was grounded with Smith in close attendance. At the other end, Jake Chambers-
Shaw drilled in a long-range shot which was comfortably saved by Spurling, in the 18th
minute, and the Seasiders keeper had to dive to his left to smother a slick shot-on-the-turn
from Ramadan on 26 minutes. However, Bury did manage to double their lead, before half-
time, via Ramadan's twice-taken penalty. Ryan Jolland powered onto Hughes' pass and
was adjudged to have been tripped by centre-half Davis for a penalty. Ramadan's first
effort found the bottom corner of the net, despite Spurling getting a hand to it, but the goal
was ruled out for encroachment into the box. Ramadan made no mistake from the retaken
penalty, again aiming his spot kick to Spurling's right, with the Seasiders keeper this time
diving the wrong way.
Enjoying a two-goal cushion going into the second period, Bury came close to adding a
third in the 54th minute as Crane's free-kick curled a foot wide of the near post. The
Seasiders finally threatened with a serious goal attempt in the 62nd minute, Ollie Canfer
seeing his well-struck shot drift only just wide of target with Barden scrambling across his
goal, but the game was effectively over as a contest, just two minutes later, as Ramadan
swept home Bury's third from close-range, following good work by Crane deep inside the
penalty area. Barden protected Bury's three-goal advantage with a superb diving save to
thwart Joseph Yaxley from distance in the 74th minute. The Blues scored a fourth when
substitute Machaya cheekily converted an 88th minute penalty, although substitute George
Clarke did bag a 90th minute consolation for the visitors, again from the penalty spot
following a foul on Callum Bennett.
Speaking after the match, Felixstowe Manager Stuart Boardley said. “We went into the
game well prepared, we knew what Bury can offer and we said we needed to keep it tight
early on, which we didn’t do, due to our inability to track runners from set pieces which is
really disappointing. I thought defensively we weren’t great today but for large periods,
particularly first half, I thought we were the better side. We didn’t create many chances
offensively but we moved the ball well and had more possession, but that doesn’t win you
