DEAN’S MESSAGE

Dear Faculty, Students, and Staff:

As this quarter concludes, we see with great clarity why nursing is such an important profession. On a global basis,
nurses are the front line soldiers in the fight against coronavirus. Nursing professionals worldwide are providing care for
countless millions of people, working day and night to try and see that everyone is well cared for. It is what our
profession is all about, and it makes me proud to be part of that profession.

It is significant that we are in the midst of the Nursing Now and International Year of the Nurse and Midwife initiatives.
Both initiatives salute and acknowledge our profession while also working to raise the visibility of nursing globally and
gain greater recognition for nurses as equal partners on the health care team. The coronavirus pandemic has certainly
made evident to the world how important nurses are.

This has been a unique and uniquely challenging quarter for everyone. I want to express my admiration for the way in
which faculty, staff and students have all rallied to help each other, the public, and the School of Nursing. You are an
extraordinary group of people, and you have my respect and admiration. Despite the challenges, we have continued to
progress along many fronts, as you will see from the attached summary of this quarter’s achievements. I am pleased
and proud to announce that today’s release of the U.S. News and World Report rankings rates us #1 among public and
private schools of nursing offering a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, a position shared with Columbia University,
School of Nursing. We are #2 among public schools that offer a master’s degree (tied for #6 overall, along with two
other public and private schools of nursing).

Thank you all for your efforts.

Warm regards,

Azita Emami, PhD, MSN, RNT, RN, FAAN

Tamara Cunitz, MN, RN. Collaboration with Othello Commons resulted in a great community key
stakeholder relationship this quarter. We used the Othello space for our first seminar in 409, and while
interacting with the staff, one of them noted that she was involved in outreach with the Somali
community. Later in the quarter the students working in Health Home-Full Life Care were tasked to begin
specific outreach into the Somali community within the neighborhood to be able to provide health home
services to that community and culturally tailor the services. This is the current project that two students
are engaged with right now. Due to the staff at Othello Commons, we were able to meet one of the key
community stakeholders/ leaders (with Homesite). Full Life Care may benefit from this relationship as well and
  services may reach this community.

ADVANCEMENT
Campaign Progress
As the UW’s Be Boundless campaign nears its end on June 30th, we are grateful for the generosity of the nearly 4,000
donors of community partners who have made a gift during the campaign thus far to support nursing students, faculty,
and research. The School of Nursing surpassed our campaign goal of $40 million in December 2019, with a current
fundraising total of $48.7 million.

This includes recently secured gifts that will create new student support funds, including:
    • A PhD term fellowship fund, made possible by an anonymous donor couple, that will be critical to attracting top
PhD candidates. To better recruit and retain PhD candidates and maintain our status as a world-class
institution, the Provost’s office offered matching funds to schools and colleges to incentivize the establishment
of new PhD fellowship funds. This fellowship fund will be matched at 50% by this initiative.
    • The Margaret McLean Heitkemper Endowed Fund for Nursing Students, established by donors Deborah Martin,
RN, MN (UW ’76) and Robert Sullivan to honor unparalleled impact that their dear friend Dr. Heitkemper’s
research and teaching have made at the School of Nursing, and will continue to make for the remainder of her
career. A small group of individuals close to Dr. Heitkemper have also generously contributed to the fund.

Celebrating Rural Health Partnership
On March 3, the School of Nursing and Premera publicly celebrated the launch of the Rural Health Initiative. Dean
Emami and Jeff Roe, CEO and President of Premera, jointly announced this $4.7 million, four-year partnership between
the School and Premera focused on improving rural health nursing both by placing current students in rural areas and
developing a rural nurse practitioner program for recent APRN graduates.

Welcoming Abbey Norris, Assistant Dean for Advancement
The Nursing advancement team is pleased to announce that Abbey Norris will join us as Assistant Dean for
Advancement beginning April 6. Abbey joins us from UW Medicine, where she served as Senior Director for
Philanthropy, leading fundraising efforts for the Department of Ophthalmology and the Institute for Protein Design.
Abbey will lead the advancement team and spearhead fundraising and constituent relations efforts for the School.

Promoting First Relationships® Home Visiting in Australia
Promoting First Relationships® (PFR) is in the second year of implementation
with Kids First Australia, an organization that works with diverse families affected
by trauma and family violence. Since November 2018, over 50 staff have been
trained at PFR level 1 (knowledge level), and 24 staff have been certified at PFR
level 2 (certified provider level). The PFR team is currently providing reflective
consultation training to supervisors so that they can support their staff in
maintaining fidelity to the model. To date, the level 2 staff have been able to
provide the PFR program to more than 40 families and educators, and they are
reporting positive outcomes. Parents are reporting increased confidence and competence; and improved child
behaviors.

                                                                                                                       10
SCHOOL OF NURSING – WINTER 2020 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Jane’s story: Jane had recently left a violent and abusive relationship. Prior to beginning PFR with her Kids First Australia
provider, she reported that her 4 year-old son was frequently displaying aggressive episodes (hitting, kicking, biting,
screaming) that could last up to 90 minutes. By the end of the 10-week program, Jane had learned ways to help her child
soothe and the behavior episodes decreased dramatically. She told her provider, “I feel a lot more confident in my
parenting now. Before the program I doubted myself a lot, thinking I must be doing something wrong or could be doing
something better. You and the videos helped me see all the little things I was doing well, and reflect on what I also needed. This
has given me more belief in myself and more focus and motivation in my approach in helping Oliver.

Two International Trainings in the Parent-Child Interaction Scales Completed March
2020

Karachi, Pakistan
In an exciting new research study in Pakistan, Dr. Almina Pardhan, Assistant
Professor at the University of Toronto and Aga Khan University has just completed
the very first cohort of teaching nurses the Parent-Child Interaction Scales in
Karachi. This training is a part of a longitudinal research study led by Dr.
Shahirose Premji at York University to examine the effects of maternal prenatal
distress. The study follows parents and their babies’ development over time. In
this unique research, nurses will code parent-child interaction live to improve
culturally acceptability.

Ontario, Canada
The fifth cohort of NCAST PCI Instructors was trained in Toronto, Ontario by Denise Findlay in February. The Ontario
Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services is continuing their ten-year commitment to PCI, Keys to Infant
Caregiving, and Promoting Maternal Mental Health During Pregnancy for all their Healthy Babies, Health Children and
Nurse Family Partnership Public Health Nurses (PHN) across the province. A collaboration with McMaster University
School of Nursing and Parent-Child Relationship Programs is in the development stage to educate and support the
PHNs of Ontario.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION

The quarterly HEALS (Halt, Engage, Allow, Learn, & Synthesize) workshop for faculty and staff was conducted on January
27, 2020. HEALS is a structured approach to help create respectful and inclusive learning and working environments.
Workshop participants learned how to identify, deconstruct, and address bias, stereotyping, or exclusionary behavior
through proactive measures and responsive steps. Spring quarter HEALS workshop is scheduled for Monday, April 20,
2:30-4:00pm.

                                                                                                                               11
SCHOOL OF NURSING – WINTER 2020 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
A number of UW School of Nursing faculty, staff, and students attended a workshop (on February 27 and 28, 2020) titled
Developing Successful NIH Diversity Supplements organized by UW School of Medicine, UW School of Public Health,
UW/Fred Hutch Center for AIDS Research, UW Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity, and UW Latino Center for Health,
and UW Graduate Opportunities and Minority Achievement Program. The workshop covered the purpose and benefits
of applying for NIH Diversity Supplements; outlined eligibility criteria, application process and components of a
successful application; and held a panel discussion that offered perspectives, tips, and lessons learned from faculty and
students who have been awarded NIH Diversity Supplements. Contact the Office of Nursing Research for information
and resources from this workshop.

On March 3, 2020, an application was submitted to the U.S. Health Resources & Services Administration in response to a
funding call for Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (Announcement Number: HRSA-20-006). This funding
opportunity is intended to promote diversity among the health professions by providing awards to eligible health
professions and nursing schools, for schools to provide scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who
have a demonstrated financial need and are enrolled full-time in a health profession program or nursing program.
Thanks to several people across the school, a collective effort pulled the application together; but much appreciation to
Lyn Bond, Hilaire Thompson, Stephanie Kirschner, Patrick Tufford and Cher Espina (in collaboration with the rest of the
Student Academic Services team, Marni Levy, Cat Olcott, Emily Lamont, Laurie Rossnagel, Teresa Ward, and Margaret
