years (Xerces Society 2018). During the winter of 2013-2014, measurements taken at overwintering sites in
Mexico showed that the eastern migratory population had reached its lowest level since monitoring efforts
in Mexico had begun. Reasons for the decline include breeding habitat loss, overwintering habitat loss,
climate change, pesticide use, natural enemies, and other anthropogenic concerns (Monarch Joint Venture
2018). While there are many factors for the decline in monarchs, habitat loss is considered the primary
concern for the states where monarchs breed (Midwest Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies 2018).
