Consumer Watch Consumer Protection 50-52 Durlacher Street, Geraldton 6530 Tel: (08) 9920 9800 Email: candice.evans@dmirs.wa.gov.au Web: www.dmirs.wa.gov.au Fix debt for free Owing money and missing repayments can be stressful, so the last thing many people in fi- nancial difficulty need is to be charged more money for help getting their debt under control. That’s why Consumer Protection urges consumers to choose free debt management advice where possible over other high-cost options. While debt management service companies may claim to be able to fix debt problems, these businesses charge fees and may not always be able to resolve the issues. Some consumers have reported signing contracts and then discovering a caveat has been put on their home. In a move designed to help protect consumers, all debt management firms will be required to hold a credit licence for the first time from 1 July 2021. While this reform to Australia’s consumer credit laws is an important step, consumers need to know that they can often get this type of assistance for free. Financial counsellors provide free debt advice and negotiate with telcos and utility companies to pay in instalments or defer payments, while community legal centres can offer free legal help to those in need. Whatever your situation, if you are struggling to repay your debts then don’t be embarrassed to seek help from free services to work through your options and understand what can and can’t be fixed. Contact details for your nearest financial counsellor can be found on the Financial Counsel- lors Association WA website – www.financialcounsellors.org/find-a-financial-counsellor/, or contact Consumer Credit Legal Service WA for advice: www.cclswa.org.au The National Debt Helpline at www.ndh.org.au is another good place to help you get started managing your debt, while complaints about debt management service providers should be directed to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority: www.afca.org.au When it comes to borrowing money for essential items, people on low-incomes can access quick No Interest Loans that are more affordable than payday loans which charge interest. Consumer Watch Consumer Protection 50-52 Durlacher Street, Geraldton 6530 Tel: (08) 9920 9800 Email: candice.evans@dmirs.wa.gov.au Web: www.dmirs.wa.gov.au Don’t let wedding planning tie you in knots Your wedding can be one of the happiest days of your life, but it may also end up being one of the most expensive. Covering the costs of all the things you need, such as a venue, catering, outfits and equipment hire, can soon add up – so it’s important to be across your consumer rights before you start shopping around. With more than 9,500 weddings taking place in Western Australia last year, there are times when things don’t go exactly to plan. Businesses closing down, not being able to contact traders and items not matching the description or samples are just some of the issues Consumer Protection receives complaints about when it comes to weddings. We also hear about disputes when it comes to bonds, deposits and payments, as well as suppliers taking money for things they can’t provide. Consumers should be aware that goods provided should be of acceptable quality and services should be delivered with due care and skill. This means that a wedding dress should match the description given, suppliers should supply on time and the venue should be fit for purpose. Before you begin to pay for products or book services, it’s important to research the business you’re thinking of choosing by checking online and asking friends or family for reviews. This will help prevent any hiccups from happening before or on your wedding day. When it comes to making payments, you should avoid paying the full amount upfront unless you’re receiving the goods or services at the same time. Instead, pay only a reasonable deposit – we recommend no more than 10 per cent if possible, with progress payments as and when things are supplied. Avoid paying by EFT (electronic fund transfer) and instead consider paying by credit card or selecting ‘credit’ on your debit card, as it may give you an option to dispute the transaction if you don’t get what you paid for. Paying by PayPal is another secure payment option. If things don’t go to plan, that’s when your consumer rights can be a handy wedding assistant. To find out more about your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, contact Consumer Protection on 1300 30 40 54 or visit: www.consumerprotection.wa.gov.au
Many Budget Benefits for Durack 13 May 2021 This week’s Morrison Government Budget sets the nation on course to secure Australia’s strong economy with a focus to create more jobs and set the country up for future prosperity. The Federal Member for Durack, the Hon. Minister Price said as a result of the hard work of the Federal Government and many in Durack during this challenging time, I am thrilled that there will be some direct tax benefits out of Budget 2021-22. “Around 60,500 taxpayers in Durack will benefit from tax relief of up to $2,745 this year. This budget extends the low- and middle-income tax offset to 2021-22 and brings forward Stage 2 of the Government’s tax relief plan. This is additional to the Government’s Tax Plan that has already benefited 74,400 people in Durack,” Ms Price said. “An extended and expanded JobTrainer Fund will support 500,000 new places to upskill job seekers and young people. We already have 4,335 apprentices in Durack and these new measures will lead to more opportunities for apprentices and trainees with expanded wage subsidies,” Ms Price said. In support of Durack agriculture and a broad range of businesses, the Morrison Government is continuing tax incentives that will allow around 20,000 businesses in Durack to write off the full value of any eligible asset they purchase. “As well, the $160 million Agricultural Supply Chain Improvements - Package 1 will cover a lot of the Durack Ag regions creating the opportunity for various rail upgrades and local roads impacted by grain freight and other heavy industry. There is a total commitment of $530 million for major infrastructure roadworks crucial to agriculture, tourism and resources across Durack,” Ms Price said. As a member of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Women’s Sub-Committee, I am particularly proud of this budget’s investment of $3.4 billion in women’s safety, health, and economic security. “This includes almost $354 million for women’s health including more than $100 million for improvements to cervical and breast cancer screening programs. Importantly for rural and remote women, the Breast Cancer Network Australia also has more funding to operate its advice helpline,” Melissa Price said. Assisting Durack families, there is a very welcome increase to childcare subsidies available with more than one child aged five and younger in childcare, and the removal of the $10,560 cap. The Morrison Government is providing additional investments in respiratory clinics, pathology testing and tracing, and the continuation of telehealth services. In Durack there have been 135,463 telehealth consultations through Medicare since the start of the pandemic and these services are now being extended “The record investment in Aged Care will help the 18,182 senior Australians living in Durack. This investment will deliver more home care places, more funding for residential aged care and increases the amount of time residents are cared for while strengthening regulators to monitor and enforce the standards of care,” Ms Price said. “At the other end of the age spectrum, unfortunately suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians between the ages of 15–44 years. The Morrison Government has recognised this, by investing $2.3 billion in the National Mental Health and Sui- cide Prevention Plan to lead landmark reform in mental health support and treatment for Australians in need. This includes treatment centres for adults, youth and children through the Head to Health and headspace programs,” Ms Price said. With Durack’s large Indigenous population, I welcome some of the very constructive job and education reforms. “To ensure employment services fit the changing job market in remote Australia and meet the unique needs of job seekers in remote communities, the Government will introduce a new remote jobs program in 2023. It will replace the Community Development Program (CDP). This new program will be developed in partnership with communities and will complement the broader New Employment Services Model being rolled out in the latter half of 2022,” Ms Price said. I welcome the steadfast leadership of Prime Minister Morrison and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg which has created a budget for our times as the economy continues its pandemic recovery, with many benefits for my Durack constituents. Increased Assistance for Cyclone Seroja Clean-Up 20 May 2021 As we mark Volunteers Week 2021, it is important to thank and acknowledge the very impres- sive clean-up efforts by community volunteers, shires, the Australian Defence Force and State Emergency Service members across the vast coastal and inland Mid-West regions impacted by ex-Tropical Cyclone Seroja. Federal Member for Durack, the Hon. Melissa Price has welcomed the Morrison Govern- ment extension of its support to the many who continue to clean up and rebuild their lives since ex TC Seroja hit the coast near Kalbarri and cut across over 130, 000 square kilometres from the coast to inland in April. “I have visited many of the impacted communities again recently and I am impressed at the pro- gress that had been made. I am proud that these committed communities will now have access to more financial assistance through the further extension of the Disaster Recovery Funding Ar- rangements (DRFA),” Ms Price said. The expanded DRFA is available in the local government areas of Carnamah, Chapman Valley, Coorow, Dalwallinu, Dandaragan, Greater Geraldton, Mingenew, Morawa, Mount Marshall, Northampton, Perenjori, Shark Bay and Three Springs. The Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements had already been activated in the immediate response to Severe Tropical Cyclone Seroja. This extension now includes Cat- egory C and Category D measures which increases the level of assistance available including to small business, farmers, restoration activities for community, recreational, cultural, heritage and environmental assets. “The expanded level of assistance will fund a clean-up program and community recovery support package for 13 local governments affected with costs covered on a 50:50 basis by the Australian and Western Australian Governments,” she said. This support includes five community recovery officers will be employed over two years to work across the impacted local government areas and support the long-term recovery of those com- munities. The recovery officers will establish a local presence and work with local governments and not-for-profit organisations. More information, https://www.disasterassist.gov.au Ends. Game 4 Report v Coorow Seniors: A few away again this week saw Gemma back in goals and a few posi- tion switch ups to fill out our side. It was a tough fight from start to finish with Coorow making us work hard all game. Our defence was once again solid and to their credit we were able to shut down the op- position from having effective shots on goal for most of the game (much to Gemma's relief!). Our Midfield and Forwards moved the ball well all day, marking their players well and capitalising on errors in the circle to win a number of short corners and opportunities in front of goals. Heidi opened the bal- ance sheet slotting a goal in the 1st quarter after a great run into the circle. After battling it out in the Midfield for the 2nd & 3rd quarters both teams struggled to score until Hannah snuck the ball through for another Three Springs goal late in the final quarter. Our amazing defence were able to hold off a late surge from Coorow to finish the game with a 2-0 Win! Our ZedElect Player of the week went to Wrey Haimona who did some serious kilometres today, and boy we were glad he was back this week to give us some extra legs. Well done Wrey! Juniors: A great even game this week against Coorow for our Juniors which was fantastic to watch. They are getting better and better at learning their positions every week and are starting to do some lovely tackles and more accurate hitting and passing. We worked hard this week at training on our short corners and it was very pleasing to see the kids put this into practice on the field throughout their game today and remember where they needed to be when they played their short corners out. The score for today was a 2 ALL DRAW!! Which was so exciting! Goals to Gemma & Rheydon. We still have alot of things to learn at training but I am very proud of each and every one of them today and the efforts they put in. Our best player today went to Rheydon, who was fantastic in our Midfield while also being mindful of our younger players on both teams and helping her team mates find their positions. Thanks to Vant Veer Services for this award. Big thanks to Kate for umpiring, Raj for coming down for Seniors, all our supporters and our parent helpers. A big shout out also to our Nippers kids who had their first win over at footy! Was great to hear them singing the Bombers song in the rooms today ❤ A great day all round for the Red & Black! Our Next Game is Saturday 29th May in Mingenew.
Three Springs Hockey Club Game Report - 15th May Three Springs v Morawa Seniors Short on both players and volunteers this week across all grades and sports, we took on Morawa at Home. Gemma McLevie stepped into goals for Tamara in our Senior game this week and what a fantastic job she did heading up our defence, who were as strong as always and helped us keeping all the goals out. Unfortunately, this week our oppositions defence was equally as tight and after much to-ing and fro-ing and a limited number of opportunities in the circle neither side put a score on the board this week, resulting in a 0-0 draw. Our ZedElect Player of the Week thanks to Zac and Bec Mills went to Gemma for her efforts in the goals. Well done Gemma! Thanks also to Sam Milloy from Morawa for volunteering his time to umpire af- ter we again struggled to find someone. Juniors We had a number of kids away this week. We started with only 8 players but Summer, Tyler B and Kenzie stepped in to make up 11 until our 2 Netball girls could arrive. Thankyou so much to those 3 wonderful kids for stepping in last minute. Our small but plucky side took on a much older and larger team in Morawa but never gave up trying the whole day. Keenan did an outstanding job in goals despite the ball spending a good part of the game in our defending zone and Linc and Jett had some great plays in our forward line. We had a few great plays late in the second half as we finally got the ball into our attacking circle with the kids spurred on by a very enthusiastic crowd of parents and sup- porters. Tried as they might, they couldn't get the ball through the keeper this time. Every week we grow and learn as a group and I am very proud of all the kids for not dropping their heads and continuing to try their best no matter how many goals snuck past them. Final score was 7-0 but not at all reflective of the effort our kids put in. Well done kids. The Player of the Week thanks to Vant Veer Services went to Jett Taylor for his efforts in the forward line. Great job Jett. Continued on the Next page
Minkey This week the Hockey Committee presented our Minkey side with a new Minkey Kit which will be used at training and weekend games, replacing our badly worn sticks and shin pads. Having enough sticks and shin pads at the Club allows all children in our community an opportunity to try out hockey be- fore committing to buying their own gear. I am sure they will be well used and we look forward to seeing many more children enjoying Hockey. Friendly reminder to please remember to let your coach know at training if you or your children are away on the weekend so we can plan for player shortages and pull kids up from other grades if needed. We had a few away on the week- end who forgot to let us know and it made for a mad scramble trying to fill our sides. Thankyou!
