T
he pandemic-induced stay-at-home life has played
havoc with people’s routines and along with that, a good
night’s sleep, creating a new population of chronic
insomniacs – “Covid-somnia” is what physicians and
researchers are calling it. There is a massive 15% increase in
cases of sleep disorders ranging from chronic insomnia (lack of
sleep) to hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness).

Our body is governed by a day-and- night cycle and people
follow social cues to go out for work, study and physical
activities, which have all been disrupted. The underlying causes
identied are acute anxiety and stress related to fear, social
isolation, nancial insecurities, physical inactivity and constant
exposure to negative media.

Although affecting all age groups, teenagers and young working
adults (aged 25 to 45 years) have been severely affected – the
elderly had fairly relaxed schedules. But, students and young
adults do not have a xed routine to adhere to and are addicted
to their gadgets.

Yoga is a natural solution to the stress and anxiety that feeds
Covid-somnia. It is a perfect antidote to sleeplessness precisely
because it is so deeply soothing and relaxing for both the body • Before going to bed, practice

                chitta-bhumi “
According to Samkhya Philosophy, Prakriti is the basis of
all physical aspects of Cosmic or Universal phenomena
simultaneous with an objective constituent of an
individual. Its subjective aspect is provided by Purusha or
                individual consciousness.

Prakriti has two operating tendencies or Gunas viz. ( 1 )
Rajas being a source of activity and ( 2 ) Tamas being the
source which resists activity. Sattva being the regulatory
or discriminative Guna of Prakriti available only when in
association with Purusha. Union of Prakriti with Purusha
(compared with a strong, sure-footed person with no
vision carrying a lame person with vision) leads to
evolution with Chitta being the rst evolute with a psycho-
physical base at an individual level and Mahat or cosmic
intelligence as rst evolute at a universal level.

Thus, an individual personality when born has a biological
body along with a subtle body consisting of Purusha and
its associated Chitta — commonly understood as Body-
Mind-Soul. The body is inherited from the parents, is
ever-changing and perishable. Its Chitta, which is all-
pervading, subtle, ever active and accumulative, gets
transmigrated along with its Purusha rom the dying body
into a new body in the making.
