NETWORK VISUALIZATION A 3D data visualization and analytics platform that provides in-depth
insight into academic collaborations within SUTD, demonstrating
SUTD Hologram the impact of multi-disciplinary collaboration over 5 years.
CHALLENGE
What tools could we build to support
the vision of an innovation-driven
research ecosystem?
How can we demonstrate the growth
and impact of a young university?
SOLUTION
Data from heterogeneous sources is
adopted to create the collaboration
network in SUTD in a Bipartite Model.
Network visualization and analytics are
developed to measure the influence
of multi-disciplinary collaboration and
academic impact.
IMPACT
Stats and visuals produced by this
project have been used as evidence
of SUTD’s value to government bodies
and external reviewers.
The project was proposed to Ministry
of Education (MOE) to influence
research ecosystem nationwide.
ROLES
Work closely with SUTD-MIT IDC, SUTD OR, SUTD HR under SUTD Associate Provost Prof. Martin Dunn.
Data curation with Excel and Python. Analysis with NetworkX. Visualization with Gephi and Rhino.
Execution from frontend to backend. Accountable for all generated stats and visuals.Zack Huang
DESIGN THINKING TOOLS A competitive-collaborative board game to help aspiring designers
solving real-world problems. It includes 54 hand-drawn cards each
Something Someone inspired by a famous design thinking method.
CHALLENGS IMPACT
How do we get non-designers applying Served as brainstorming tools for
design thinking methods to solve their multiple design projects and design
problems unknowningly? thinking workshops.
ROLES
Research, user study, sketch, design, development, testing and production of the board game.Zack Huang
SYSTEM ENGINEERING A 3D printed generative art designed as a token of appreciation for a
world renowned professor, chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board
SUTD Cube of SUTD-MIT International Design Centre.
CHALLENGE
Show the scientific frontier of digital
design and manufacturing with strong
SUTD identity in minimalistic form.
SOLUTION
A single line travels in space linking six
SUTD logos with an optimized path. It
represents a classic NP-hard problem
in Operations Research.
Advanced FEM and a new soluble 3D
printing support material was used to
make different variations of the cube.
IMPACT
Design was used as token or trophy
for multiple events including multiple
years of SUTD capstone finals, and
SUTD-MIT IDC external reviews.
The design was used by Stratasys as
print samples for their to-be-released
new materials and giveaways in 3D
printing conferences.
ROLES
Design with Rhino and Grasshopper, FEM analysis with Solidworks.
Production with Stratasys J750, HP Jet Fusion 580, 3DS ProJet MJP 5600, and low-cost FDM printers.Zack Huang
RAPID PROTOTYPING A sculpture modeled upon the logo of SUTD-MIT International
Design Centre (IDC). Also known as the Impossible D, created by an
Penrose D algorithm that constructs Penrose illusion.
CHALLENGE
How could we create impossible
optical illusions, e.g., the logo of IDC,
in real world? How to make life-size
models with high precision?
SOLUTION
An algorithm was created to generate
any 3D forced perspective objects
from 2D illusions. A papercraft
software was used to create the wire
frame for large-scale prototyping.

Exhibit in the Journey to Infinity:
Escher’s World of Wonder, created
the ames room with same algorithm
in the said exhibition at ArtScience
Musesum, Singapore, Sept 2016 to
Mar 2017.
Displayed in SUTD-MIT IDC gallery.
ROLES
Development of the 2D to 3D algorithm with Grasshopper. Design of the ames room for ArtScience Museum.
Design and production of life-size model with Pepakura within one month.Zack Huang
ENGINEERING DESIGN World’s smallest bio-inspired spherical rolling miniature robot made
for multi-agent intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) in
Virgo an urban environment.
CHALLENGE
Design of an ISR platform for urban
settings at greatly reduced scales and
transformative potentials.
SOLUTION
After 9+ months of development, we
came up with a novel mechatronics
design that allows the seamless
integration of drift-less architecture,
COTS controller, communication
and sensors. Beyond Virgo, we also
built multiple rolling robot platforms,
testbeds and lab kits for the future
development of this project.
IMPACT
The 60mm/47g Virgo 1.0 was then the
smallest rolling robot in the world in
2015. It was published and presented
at multiple robotics conferences.
Served as one of the key deliverables
of a multimillion-dollar military project.
Virgo was awarded Singapore Good
Design Mark 2017.
ROLES
Work closely with Temasek Lab@SUTD with a core team of three under Prof. Kevin Otto for Virgo 1.0.
Design, 3D printing, machining, carbon fiber vacuum infusion, part sourcing, assembly and testing.Zack Huang
DESIGN SPRINT A brass ring designed to celebrate the graduation of the first batch of
undergraduates at SUTD, honoring the pioneering spirit of joining a
Pioneer Ring first-of-its-kind undergraduate program in Singapore.
What is a
DESIGN SPRINT?
DESIGN SPRINT is a design process with
a fixed time window of 90 days or less
to deliver tangible solutions for critical
challenges through iterations of data
collection, design research, ideation,
system engineering, and prototyping.
CHALLENGE
Within 90 days, design and deliver of
a custom made conversation piece
which invokes the exciting story of the
first 300 undergraduates’ adventure
with a newborn university.
SOLUTION
With a design of vintage typesetting
style, the ring hides a message to the
class of 2015 “the forever pioneer &
innovator” from Prof. Kristin Wood,
one of the four founding Head of
Pillars of SUTD.
The ring reveals the message if it is
press rolled on the skin or a tissue
paper with coffee stains.
ROLES
Work closely with overseas factories, suppliers, and SUTD EPD administrative team.
Design and project management from casting, silver plating, to packaging and delivery.Zack Huang
DESIGN SPRINT Branding guidelines designed for SUTD Office of Research which
provides a concise, quick reference for presentations of individual
SUTD Research research, labs, centers, clusters or themes.

MAKALU Chairman of SUTD’s Board of Trustees.
CHALLENGE
30 days to create a unique token
of appreciation to one of the most
influential people in the development
of SUTD, a pioneer in education.
SOLUTION
SUTD Students climbed the Seven
Summits and named a Himalayan
peak “SUTD” with Mr. Ng's support.
Coincidentally, MAKALU is the famous
origami model named after Himalayan
Peaks. We turned MAKALU into a 3D

Each building block of the MAKALU
puzzle hides a personal thank-you
from the founding senior manage-
ment team of SUTD.
IMPACT
It was received as a symbol of the
ethos of SUTD. Mr. Ng jokingly insisted
that all his successors should know
how to solve this puzzle.
Our team was contacted by Singapore
MOE to make a token for a state-level
foreign affair in a near future.

utilized tools among EPD students,
combined with a thin thumb drive that
can be press fit into the multi-tool.
IMPACT
Due to popularity, the toolset was
selected as the official EPD graduation

SOLUTION
After 100+ stakeholders interviewed,
150+ prototypes and extensive study of
a previous pilot test, two designs were
accepted at the final design review:
for 6-7 years olds, a small calculator with
coins as buttons.
for 8-12 years olds, an ultra-slim NFC

IMPACT
The calculator design was adopted
