Page 2 Saint John the Evangelist From Father Jim July 4, 2021 “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happi- ness.”– Declaration of Independence I wish you all a blessed Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time and a blessed Fourth of July! Two hundred and forty-five years ago the Declaration of Independence was signed and promulgated by the Repre- sentatives of the United States in General Congress. After listing a litany of irreparable grievances against the Crown, our Founding Fathers declared their, and our, independence. It is refreshing, encour- aging, and perhaps even timely, that we read the Declaration again and, in a spiritual sense, apply it to the times we find ourselves in. Perhaps we Faithful of Christ might consider making our own declaration of independence from the sinful aspects of the present culture in these United States. While there is much to be grateful for in these United States there is also a growing acceptance of grave evil. In fact, there are many modern movements which claim that certain moral evils are now actually good things. Those behind these movements place pressure on many, especially our children, to see what God has called sin and evil as liberating and healthy forms of self-expression. Things like abortion, contraception, sexual relations outside of the marriage bonds of one man and one woman, and euthana- sia to name four. But, of course, we know better. Things that are intrinsically evil (that is always and everywhere) are still evil and no amount of spin or clever language can change that. So, what are we to do in the face of this twisted demonic push to normalize evil? Declare our independ- ence! We proclaim that we are not under the law of death and we cannot be compelled to support in any fashion the evils promoted in certain parts of modern society. In the final analysis we must remember that we are answerable only to God for what we think, say, and do. Not to any group, movement, or even government does our first obligation belong. While it is true that we are called to be good citizens and residents of the lands we inhabit, fealty only applies to those things that are in line with Divine and Natural Law. In Christ alone do we find true freedom. Much of society conflates freedom with liceity. That is, many think freedom means being able to do whatever one desires, wherever, and however. On the contrary, true freedom means we are able, within and without, to choose that which we ought, that which is true, right, and just. Freedom is the ability to choose those things that bring life and enhance our lives and the lives of our brothers and sisters, all the while glorifying God. Today, let us declare our independence from sin, dysfunction, and moral decay. Let us embrace the Faith in God necessary for true liberation from the snares of the devil and eternal damnation. Confes- sion and a firm purpose to amend our lives is the perfect start to our life in Christ. As Saint Paul says in his letter to the Galatians, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” This, my friends, is the true freedom enjoyed by God’s children.

Hace dos- cientos cuarenta y cinco años la Declaración de Independencia fue firmada y promulgada por los Representantes de los Estados Unidos en el Congreso General. Después de enumerar una letanía de agravios irreparables contra la Corona, nuestros Padres Fundadores declararon su independencia y la nuestra. Es reconfortante, alentador y quizás incluso opor- tuno que leamos la Declaración nuevamente y, en un sentido espiritual, la apliquemos a los tiempos en que nos encontra- mos. Quizás los Fieles de Cristo podríamos considerar hacer nuestra propia declaración de independencia de los pecado- res aspectos de la cultura actual en estos Estados Unidos. Aunque hay mucho que agradecer en estos Estados Unidos, también hay una creciente aceptación de mal grave. De he- cho, hay muchos movimientos modernos que afirman que ciertos males morales son ahora en realidad cosas buenas. Los que están detrás de estos movimientos presionan a muchos, especialmente a nuestros niños, a que vean lo que Dios ha llamado pecado y maldad como formas liberadoras y saludables de autoexpresión. Cosas como el aborto, la anticon- cepción, las relaciones sexuales fuera de los lazos matrimoniales de un hombre y una mujer, y la eutanasia, por nombrar cuatro. Pero, por supuesto, lo sabemos mejor. Las cosas que son intrínsicamente malvadas, es decir siempre y en todas partes, siguen siendo malvadas y ningún giro o lenguaje inteligente puede cambiar eso. Entonces, ¿Qué vamos a hacer frente a este retorcido impulso demoniaco para normalizar el mal? ¡Declare nuestra inde- pendencia! Proclamemos que no estamos bajo la ley de la muerte y que no podemos ser obligados a apoyar de ninguna manera los males promovidos en ciertas partes de la sociedad moderna. En el análisis final, debemos recordar que solo somos responsables ante Dios por lo que pensamos, decimos y hacemos. Nuestra primera obligación no pertenece a ningún grupo, movimiento o incluso gobierno. Si bien es cierto que estamos llamados a ser buenos ciudadanos y residen- tes de las tierras que habitamos, la fidelidad solo se aplica a aquellas cosas que están alineados con la Ley Divina y Na- tural. Solo en Cristo encontramos la verdadera libertad. Gran parte de la sociedad confunde libertad con libertinaje. Es decir, muchos piensan que la libertad significa poder hacer lo que uno desee donde sea y como sea. Por el contrario, la verda- dera libertad significa que somos capaces, por dentro y por fuera, de elegir lo que debemos, lo que es verdadero, correcto y justo. La libertad es la capacidad de elegir aquellas cosas que dan vida y mejo- ran nuestras vidas y las vidas de nuestros hermanos y hermanas, mientras glorificamos a Dios. Hoy declaremos nuestra independencia del pecado, la disfunción y la decadencia moral. Abracemos la Fe en Dios nece- saria para la verdadera liberación de las trampas del diablo y la condenación eterna. La confesión y un firme propósito de enmendar nuestras vidas es el comienzo perfecto para nuestra vida en Cristo. Como dice San Pablo en su carta a los Gálatas, “Con Cristo he sido crucificado; ya no soy yo quien vive, sino Cristo quien vive en mí; y la vida que ahora vivo en la carne, la vivo por la fe en el Hijo de Dios, quien me amó y se entregó a sí mismo por mí”.
