2018 COLLECTION
In the early 80’s, mountain biking was only just emerging as a sport. The equipment was bad and the clothing was worse. Over just a few years, its popularity grew considerably with a scene developing in Whistler and on Vancouver’s notorious North Shore. By the mid-80’s, the gear was improving and the sport was progressing rapidly. 1986 brought about the first ever Canadian Mountain Bike Championships, with the competition spanning a few days and finishing in Whistler with local boy, Brent Martin, coming out on top. Shortly after being crowned Canadian Champion, Brent founded RYDERS EYEWEAR®. His goal was simple—to provide cyclists of all stripes with high quality, performance-oriented eyewear that they wouldn’t hesitate to use, especially in the most destructive conditions. But it wasn’t just about eyewear and bikes—he was determined to remain actively involved in the cycling and outdoor community, doing what he could to encourage the growth of these sports. For the past 31 years, we have stayed true to Brent’s vision. The reality is that mountain biking, road cycling and endurance mountain sports present the most unique and challenging environments for eyewear. Designing eyewear for golf, baseball or activities that occur in static environments doesn’t force you to meet these challenges. We design, test and produce products to directly solve problems that are encountered in these hostile activities and environments. Our deep roots in the Pacific Northwest are of vital importance to who we are today. Not only are we still headquartered in North Vancouver, but everything we do is influenced by our drive for adventure, our love for providing like-minded people with hard-working gear, and our overwhelming sense of community—both in our backyard and afar.

The perfect fit
Whether you’re looking for a pair of shoes or a new a bike, fit is absolutely critical. Performance eyewear is
no different. Long-term comfort, fog resistance, helmet compatibility, as well as glare and wind protection
are all affected by how well the frame fits your face. There are many aspects of frame design that—when
applied properly—are more likely to produce a high-performance product on a wider range of face shapes.
This is where 30 years of experience, an in-house design team, and a big crew of product testers spread
over a vast range of climates, geographies, and action sports come into play.
HOW TO GET A FOG-RESISTANT FIT
If you want the ultimate in fog protection, combine a great fitting frame with our critically-acclaimed
antiFOG lenses. Fogging is one of the most common issues affecting high-performance eyewear. Fogging
problems can be mitigated by choosing glasses that are big enough to allow a significant amount of airflow
behind the lens. A pair that fits too close to the face is much more likely to fog than one that fits correctly.
In addition to finding the right size, adjustable or interchangeable nose pads are an excellent fog-fighting
feature because they allow you to position your eyewear the appropriate distance from your face.
HELMET COMPATIBILITY
Not everyone who wears RYDERS EYEWEAR® uses them for helmet sports, but if you do wear a helmet,
choose a pair of glasses that won’t interfere with straps, retention devices or the helmet itself. Airflow
also changes once your helmet is on, so make sure that your glasses have enough breathing room when
worn with a helmet. Both airflow and helmet interference problems can be dealt with by using adjustable
temple tips because they allow you to angle the frame for ventilation, and can be manually formed to fit
around straps, retention devices and helmet edges.
LENS COVERAGE
Airflow behind the lens is as important as lens coverage if you want top performance from your eyewear.
These factors can work against one another so it’s important to find the balance that best meets your
needs. Protection from sunlight is just one of the reasons that most cyclists and outdoor athletes choose
performance eyewear. Wind, dust, and other environmental hazards are important considerations, so make
sure that you choose a lens that is big enough to effectively block all of the elements, and a frame that
provides adequate breathing room for a performance fit.

Women’s-specific
design philosophy
One-size-fits-all often doesn’t apply to performance gear. And when it comes to designing for women,
‘shrink it and pink it’ is not our philosophy. Though there are certainly many frames that fit well on
both men and women, there are some differences that simply can’t be ignored.
Our research revealed that there are few options available for women who prefer a more fashion-oriented
look, without compromising on performance. Traditionally, performance frames have featured very technical
and often masculine styling that doesn’t appeal to all women. Narrower fits, shorter temple tips and more
organically-shaped frames with adjustable components and technical lenses are the characteristics that
define the RYDERS® Women’s Collection.

Until now, most semi-rim sport glasses have been variations on a standard design—a frame across
the top of the lens with the bottom edge of the lens exposed. We’ve taken this concept and flipped
it on its head. And we haven’t done it just to be different. We recognized that despite the practical
applications of traditional semi-rims, there were some obvious opportunities for improvement.
FOG RESISTANCE
Hot air rises, so the warm, humid air from your face needs to be able to escape over the top of your
lens if you want to avoid fogging. A frame can block this airflow, causing the lens to fog. It can even
collect moisture that may later drip down the back of the lens. By removing the top of the frame,
the humidity can rise and escape without interruption.
FIELD OF VISION
In many sports we find ourselves looking down through the bottom of our lenses (to pick up a ball
for example) so a traditional semi-rim makes sense for these activities. When cycling, however, we
often look through the upper half of the lens because of our body position. By removing the top of
the frame we expand and improve our field of vision.
IMPACT PROTECTION
Since the upper frame contributes to fogging and limits our field of vision, why not just remove
the frame altogether to produce a conventional rimless shield? Because there’s another hazard
associated with fast-forward outdoor activities—crashing. When compared to a frame, the bottom
edge of a lens is far more likely to cut your face in the event of a crash. By running the frame along
the bottom of the lens, we improve protection while increasing the overall strength and performance
of the eyewear.
