The Republic of Tatarstan (Tatarstan or Tataria) is part of the Volga Federal District
and the Volga Economic District.
Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, is a large port city on the left bank of the Volga River
where it meets the Kazanka River. The city officially brands itself as Russia’s third
capital. In 2005, it celebrated its 1000th anniversary.
Kazan is one of the most ethnically and religiously diverse cities in the country, where
Islam, Orthodox Christianity, Judaism and Catholicism coexist and enrich each other.
Tatar cuisine unites traditions of Khazars, Volga Bulgars, Mongols and peoples from
Central Asia. Beef, lamb, and horse dishes are among the specialties. Chak-chak, a
traditional wedding desert made from fried dough and honey, has become another
Tatarstan landmark.
