            Why Don’t We Understand Ourselves
I wanted to speak at the SLAM Conference partially because
I thoroughly enjoy public speaking, but perhaps more so
because I have something to say. After a short lifetime of
pursuing terrifying goals, traveling, and some experiences
that almost nobody in the world gets to experience (or has
to endure,) I have spent the last two years reading,
observing, and thinking about a strange combination of
psychology, philosophy, and business and games. The
lessons I have learned in those two years have changed my
paradigm completely and I want to bring that to a table of
people who are interested in progressing. It seems that the
thing people understand the least is often themselves, and
they don’t realize how detrimental that is to their life and the
world. Since beginning college I have attending programs at
Shanghai Normal University, The University of Cambridge,
and Utah Valley University. I am studying Business
Management and Psychology and I plan to earn an MBA in
Operations Management and a PhD in Strategic
            Management and Acquisitions.

            Josie Smart
            Society's Idea of Success
What made me want to speak at SLAM? I was taking the
SLSS 1000 class last semester with Professor Wong. Our
final presentation was a 6 minute speech on success. I didn't
think I was super passionate about it until I ended up
rambling on for 20 minutes about what I thought success
was. Professor Wong came up to me later and told me to
            look into SLAM! :-
Why am I passionate about the subject I am talking about?
Well, I think success is a really simple thing that we think
about very often, but I think it is often overlooked on how it
really should be viewed. A lot of us view it as something that
is so out of reach that we will never get there, that we will
never achieve the feeling of success. But, that is not the
case. Changing my mind set on success has helped me in
my school, work, personal life more than anything. If I can
help people realize that they are truly capable of doing
everything that they set their mind to, I would be so happy. I
am studying Communications with an emphasis on Public
Relations and a minor in Marketing! I really enjoy singing,
theater, calligraphy, LLAMAS, and a lot of other things! I am Presidential Interns
from South Jordan, UT! I also really enjoy laughing at

Allan is from Alpine, Utah. I am the oldest of 5. I am currently
studying business management and I plan to graduate with
a degree in that within the next 2 years. I love making music
on my own and with my band.I wanted to speak at SLAM
because of Professor Yoast. I took a class from her last
semester and because of everything I learned from her, it
motivated me to share my story with others even more. I'm
passionate about personal growth and change because I
think it defines who we are and who we become. We can
look at past choices and decide how we'll let them affect us.

            Lead With Play
Anna is currently a senior at UVU studying Communication.
Originally from Morgan, Utah, she has been interested in
leadership from a young age and hopes to go into
leadership and organizational consulting after attending
graduate school. In addition to her current schooling, she
currently interns with UVU President Astrid Tuminez and is
grateful for the leadership skills she has gained from that
experience. Anna has wanted to speak at SLAM Conference
since she was a freshman, but never felt in a place to be able
to do so. Now she has an awesome topic to talk about and
great research to back it up! She believes playfulness carries
an important role in the effectiveness of leadership and is
often taken for granted. Her research in playful leadership
has led her to win the National Communication Association
Legacy Scholarship Speech award and the opportunity to
further this research in her senior thesis. In her downtime,
Anna enjoys playing the piano, singing, and daydreaming
            about Harry Styles.

    Leadership and Depression:
    Finding Your Strength
For much of my life, I considered my depression to be a
major weakness holding me back from pursuing what I
wanted to do. This changed when I realized that my
struggles helped me develop traits which I could use to
reach my goals. SLAM was a perfect opportunity to share
the insights I’ve gained in hopes of helping others with
depression and/or anxiety see their strengths as leaders.
After graduating from UVU with a bachelor’s degree in
family science, I plan to continue advocating for mental
health as a family life educator.

     The Power of Perspective
Alysha is from Lehi, Utah (go pioneers) and loves to spend
time with her husband, family, and friends. She is currently a
junior at UVU majoring in Communication Studies. Alysha is
part of the UVU Mentor Program and enjoys meeting new
people and making friendships. The topic of perspective is
important to her because it has helped her through the ups
and downs of life as a college student which you are all
familiar with. She believes that even if your circumstances
can not change, your perspective can.
