Wayland Getting From Here to There Getting from here to there - it’s one of the things that can make or break a community. Imagine New York without its harbor, or New Orleans without the Mississippi. Wayland got its first big break when it became a stop on the road from here to there. Wayland’s first roads were little more than tracks. Early settlers with a load of shingles to sell had an arduous journey to markets in Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Grand Rapids. That changed when the Plank Road was completed in 1855. The road, constructed of thick wooden planks, ran from Grand Rapids, through Wayland, to Kalamazoo - the terminal point for several railroad companies. The road turned Wayland from a tiny backwater village to a bustling center of commerce and a stopping point for travelers making the trip from one city to the other. Unfortunatley, within a Wayland’s roads were still unpaved in this c.1900 photo decade the planks had become worn and broken. Only the of West Superior, but pedestrians had the luxury of paved hardiest traveled its route. Just as the road was falling into sidewalks. disrepair, the railroad finally extended its tracks to Wayland, passing about a half-mile west of the downtown. Some business relocated to be near the railroad depot and new companies established themselves there as well, but overall, Wayland continued to thrive in response to the new, convenient transportation available. At one point Wayland had two rail lines. The Interurban, an electric rail line, arrived in Wayland in 1914, running from Grand Rapids to Kalamazoo. It provided fast and economical service to small towns along its route and even high school students from Martin and Bradley would take the Interurban to Wayland High School. It was built with private funds and the company couldn’t sustain the profits needed to continue operation and the line closed down for good in 1929. In the short time the interurban was in existence, the automobile moved from being a luxury item to being the primary way of getting from You could walk from your front door to the train station and here to there. With pressure mounting from all quarters to from there, travel to anywhere in the country. provide better roads, the route of the Old Plank Road was acquired by the state and paved to become the original Route 131, running through downtown Wayland. Once again, Wayland was on the map, a center point and destination on a road between two major cities. Businesses flourished during these years, with a steady flow of traffic passing through. This lasted until the 1970s when Route 131 was rebuilt as a four lane freeway, passing west of town. People, seeking the easiest way to get from here to there, began using it and abandoning the narrow, slower old Route 131. Business growth gradually slowed as the traffic moved around Wayland instead of through it. Today, with our new designation as a Main Street community, we expect to find innovative ways to get people from there to here, back to Wayland. One exciting development is the creation of new ways to walk around Wayland. By the time this c.1920 picture was taken, Wayland’s roads Stick around, these are exciting times for Wayland! were paved and there were several Wayland businesses catering to the automobile trade. Gas stations and car sales became part of the landscape. Written By: Gail Hollinger 7

At Wayland Union Schools, students are given many opportunities to express themselves creatively. Music and Art programs are part of the elementary curriculum and start in Kindergarten. The beautiful Fine Arts Center, located at the high school, boasts an 800 seat state-of-the-art performance venue, a dance studio, and one of the finest cafeterias you will find anywhere in the state. The Fine Arts Center hosts over 100 events each year ranging from school concerts and athletic banquets to guest performances. Art Hop, debuting in December of 2009, is held in conjunction with the annual downtown Christmas tree-lighting and festivities. Held annually on the first Friday in December, Art Hop transforms downtown businesses into “Art Venues.” During the event, local artists show and sell their art. Many Art Venues provide live music and refreshments. Refreshments are also provided during the tree-lighting ceremony and festivities. In addition to enjoying the art, families can take a horse-drawn wagon ride, enjoy Christmas songs by strolling Christmas Carolers, warm themselves by a warming fire, interact with strolling Charles Dickens characters, and much more! Wayland’s school choir and strings program has received recognition and fame for winning numerous awards for their top-notch talent. In addition to performing throughout the state, the strings and choir students regularly perform at community and school events all through the year. Many students have been accepted into youth symphonies and orchestras. During select years, the orchestra at Wayland Union High School performs with the Grand Rapids Symphony at the Fine Arts Center. This fabulous performance is one of many complimentary performances offered at the venue. In addition, the local school offers students many opportunities in band, art and theater. The band can be heard during local home football games and marching in local parades. The theater class performs plays throughout the year. In the Spring, volunteers gather to help Wayland Main Street beautify the streets by clearing up debris and planting flowers. In August of each year, residents can enjoy free outdoor movies and music. Family-friendly “Movies on Main Street” are held downtown on Thursdays, while Concerts in the Park are held on Fridays at the Wayland City Park. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy these wonderful evenings. 14

In 1887 United Bank established its first branch in downtown Wayland. I have been with United Bank for 10 years and am currently the Branch Officer for our Wayland location. Wayland is my home town, in which I now have the privilege of raising my family in and serving those who served me. As a United Banker I believe in community banking and in building relationships. The Wayland Chamber and it’s members have been an innovative partner to United Bank in business and life and have played a valuable part in my personal and professional role in the community. I have enjoyed getting to know numerous community members at chamber luncheons, ribbon cutting ceremonies and annual events. I am grateful to be a part of this community and appreciate all that the Wayland Chamber does to support this great place. Robin Beckwith, Branch Officer United Bank Referrals – When someone calls, e-mails or stops by the chamber office looking for a particular business, members receive priority referrals. Community Support – The chamber proudly awards an annual scholarship to a graduating senior each year (based on community leadership and volunteering). We also adopt a charity organization annually and work to help raise funds and awareness for the organization. We provide the community with the annual Christmas parade and help the Veterans with the annual Memorial Day parade. We also organize the annual community Business Expo and assist the City of Wayland’s DDA/Main Street with the Movies on Main Street and Art Hop. “Gun Lake Casino has been a premiere employer, advocate for the local community, and an entertainment destination in Wayland since 2011. The never-ending support from the Wayland Area Chamber of Commerce and the chamber’s Executive Director, Denise Behm, has greatly assisted in the formation of vital relationships within the Wayland community. The chamber offers specific benefits for each partner, specializing in the needs of your business. Gun Lake Casino is a unique company, offering a wide variety of jobs, dining and entertainment offerings, yet the Wayland Area Chamber has found a way to support us in many facets.” Alexis Bolo, Community & Public Relations Coordinator Gun Lake Casino 30

Denise and her team have been committed to offering us ways to grow through advertising & networking. Family & Community Events – Bring your family, friends or clients to our annual “Chamber Night” at the Grand Rapids Griffins or join us on our private deck during our “Chamber Night” at the West Michigan Whitecaps! “Wayland is ‘home base’ for ITC on the west side of the state. Our roots here run deep, and we’re proud of our award-winning facility, which was recognized by the Wildlife Habitat Council for our stormwater management practices, and of our people who work here. Being a member of the Wayland Area Chamber of Commerce connects us to other likeminded business and community leaders who have a vested interest in seeing Wayland grow and thrive – it’s truly a great partnership.” Nora Balgoyen, Manager Area Government & Community Affairs ITC 31
