2021 MICHIGAN SKILLS USA VIRTUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
                              TASK & MATERIALS LIST: COSMETOLOGY

PURPOSE:
To evaluate each contestants’ preparation for employment and to recognize outstanding students for excellence and
professionalism in the field of cosmetology.

ELIGIBILITY:
Open to active SkillsUSA members enrolled in programs with cosmetology as the occupational objective.

RESUME:
Each student must submit a one-page printed resume by April 6, 2021 to the following email:
mi.cosmetologyskills@gmail.com. Failure to do so will result in a 10-point penalty. Resume must include a valid
email address for video submissions to a designated YouTube channel. Your invite to the YouTube channel will be
sent to your email address on your Resume.

TASKS TO BE PERFORMED:
1. Long Hair Design
2. Ladies Haircut and Design
3. Communication Skills
*Note: Proper sanitation must be maintained throughout the contest. Draping of the mannequin is optional on all
services.

SUPPLIES NEEDED BY THE CONTESTANT:
   ● One brand new mannequin for Ladies Haircut & Design.
   ● Order from Burmax at 800-645-5118. Purchase a “Bridget” Mannequin (16”-17” long) for $23.10
   ● One long haired mannequin, brown preferably for The Creative Long Hair Design. (You do not have to
      purchase, use what you have on hand)
   ● 1 page resume
   ● Clips of any necessary size and type
   ● Curling iron, blow dryer
   ● Scissors, razor, thinning shears, clippers (optional)
   ● Hair spray, setting lotions, styling aids
   ● Combs & brushes
   ● Bobby pins and hair pins (optional)
   ● Water bottle (filled)
   ● Towels
   ● Plain rubber bands (optional)
   ● Thermal stove/iron (optional)
   ● Phone/iPad/tablet for recording video

SCOPE OF THE CONTEST:
Contestants will submit a video, by April 9, 2021, then present via Zoom on April 19, 2021, to show their ability to
perform skills from the following list of competencies.

1. Creative Long Hair Design:
    ● Competitors will have 1 hour to complete the long hair design of their choice. Timed by Proctor from
        contestants school
    ● Submit a picture of finished mannequin showing the top, back and each side of the mannequin
    ● A video is to be submitted which must include 6-10 minutes of the beginning of the contest. 6-10 minutes in
        the middle of the contest and 6-10 minutes at the end of this contest, showing the Proctor/Instructor in the
        room with the Contestant during all 3 clips
    ● No cutting of the mannequin hair
    ● No ornamentation or hairpieces allowed
    ● Design should reflect fantasy/competition or special occasion hair designs
    ● Any technique: braiding, twisting, rolls, loops, etc. may be included and is encouraged
    ● Thermal tools and styling products may be used
    ● Have your own rubber bands, hairpins, or bobby pins

2. Woman’s Hair Cut & Design
   ● Competitors will have 45 minutes to duplicate a haircut and design that has been pre-selected. Timed by
      Proctor from contestants school
   ● A video is to be submitted which must include 6-10 minutes of the beginning of the contest. 6-10 minutes in
      the middle of the contest and 6-10 minutes at the end of this contest, showing the Proctor/Instructor in the
      room with the Contestant during all 3 clips
   ● Photo will be provided online
   ● Duplicate the haircut using shears, thinning/texturizing shears, razor and/or clippers as needed
   ● Duplicate the length
   ● Duplicate the design lines
   ● Duplicate the texture
   ● Duplicate the balance of form
   ● Duplicate the control of the hair direction
   ● Use appropriate styling products to duplicate the selected haircut/style.
   ● Duplicate the finished look using blow dryer or thermal tools such as curling iron, flat iron, etc. as needed.

Video submissions are due April 9, 2021. Videos will be judged on these two areas of the competition and finalists
will be announced by April 15, 2021 to continue on to the next leg of the competition. A maximum of 10 Contestants
will be chosen to go on to the last portion of the Competition. The selected finalists will compete live, via Zoom, in the
final portion of the competition on April 20, 2021.

3. Presentation/Communication Skills:
    ● Contestants will give a 1-3 minute presentation of their mannequins.
    ● Introduce yourself
    ● Explain the skills and techniques used to achieve their finished results
    ● Respond to oral questions (if asked)
    ● Demonstrate clear communication skills during presentation
    ● Use a pleasant voice.
    ● Smile
    ● Show confidence in work

*During your video, consistently show the Instructor or Proctor that is watching you compete during each section of
the competition. We are trusting that all work is performed by you only. Any indication of help performing any task
will result in disqualification.

April 15, 2021:   Finalists notified
April 19, 2021:   Finalist presentation via Zoom
April 23, 2021:   Results sent to Headquarters
