2021 Summer Recreation Program - Town of Orangetown
A Message from the Supervisor
Although we have all been living through some extraordinary times, with
the summer finally here and hopefully COVID-19 in the rearview mirror,
there is no better time to get out and enjoy the beautiful outdoors right
 here in Orangetown.

While this year we still cannot offer all of the same programs that we have
done in the past, our Orangetown Parks & Recreation Department has
been hard at work to come up with a selection of fun family-oriented activ-
ities for children, adults, and senior citizens of all fitness levels. Lead by
Superintendent Aric Gorton, our staff's mission is to deliver quality, afford-
able programming in, what is more important now than ever, a safe and
 healthy environment.

I want to thank the entire Parks and Recreation Department for their con-
tinued hard work and dedication to enhancing the quality of life here in
 Orangetown.

As you read through this season’s brochure, please mark your calendars
with all the activities you and your family will enjoy. With an excellent line
up of programming and hundreds of acres of parks and trails that the Town
and Rockland County have to offer, we hope you will take advantage of
 everything right in your backyard.

                    Sincerely,
                    Teresa M. Kenny

all residential addresses in Orangetown, therefore, proof of residency will no longer be
required. If you’re a resident and your address is showing as a non-resident, please contact
the recreation office by email as soon as possible. First time registrants may visit our web-
site and click on the green on-line registration button in order to create a new household.
The non-resident registration policy will still be in effect for non-resident households and
they may only register 7 business days prior to the start of the program. The registration

active at 5:00pm on Wednesday, June 16th.
Please check your email regularly for any emails regarding our programs All registrants are
advised that many programs have limited availability and registration is accepted on a first

yourself with the on-line system. The on-line system now accepts all major credit cards and
you will receive an emailed receipt upon successful completion of your registration. If you
register after the start of a program, you will be required to show your receipt to the
instructor.

electronic wait list. If you register and are placed on a wait list, if a spot opens up the recre-

Beginning Golf
Skyhawks Golf focuses on building the confidence of young athletes by teaching proper
technique to refine essential skills of the game. Golf is a challenging and lifelong sport, so
young athletes need proper focus on the fundamentals of form, swinging, putting, and
body positioning. To assist in this training, Skyhawks has adopted the SNAG (Starting New
At Golf) system to its curriculum. SNAG utilizes a set of equipment designed for beginning
golfers, including oversized plastic club heads and “mini tennis balls” to help build confi-
dence and to have fun. Developed by PGA professionals, SNAG is specifically designed for
the entry-level player; SNAG simplifies instruction so that young players can make an easy
and effective transition onto the golf course. No need to bring your own clubs--all equip-
ment is provided. We keep the instructor-to-camper ratio low, resulting in limited avail-
ability. These programs fill up quickly.

Mini-Hawk
This multi-sport program was developed to give children a positive first step into athletics.
The essentials of baseball, basketball and soccer are taught in a safe, structured environ-
ment with lots of encouragement and a big focus on fun. Our Mini-Hawk games and activ-
ities were designed to allow campers to explore balance, movement, hand/eye coordina-
tion, and skill development at their own pace. Skyhawks staff are trained to handle the
specific needs of young athletes.

Skyhawk Sports & Games
Our multi-sport camp is designed to introduce young athletes to a variety of different
sports in one setting. For this program we combine soccer, baseball/softball, basketball,
flag football, capture the flag and ultimate frisbee into one fun-filled week (each week
will include 2 sports). Athletes will learn the rules and essentials of each sport through skill-
based games and scrimmages. By the end of the week, your child will walk away with
knowledge of multiple sports along with vital life lessons such as respect, teamwork, and
self-discipline.

               Summer 2021 Topics
                                      BRIXOLOGY
Engineering Camp lays the foundation for our next generation of makers! Kids learn
about different types of engineering and then team up to construct different engineering-
themed projects using LEGO® bricks. They learn about aerospace engineering while
assembling a space station. They explore mechanical engineering as they build boats and
vehicles. That’s not all…from carnival rides to drawing machines, mechanical animals to
truss bridges, your future engineer will build upon their creativity to solve real-world
design challenges, while developing their problem-solving and team-building skills. Take
home projects are provided each day, which are brick-based and can be used with LEGO®
bricks at home. Let the tinkering begin! Appropriate for students entering grades 2 – 5

                                CRAZY CHEMWORKS
During this action-packed camp kids explore chemistry in a safe manner. With spectacular
hands-on activities and amazing demonstrations, kids will both learn and apply the con-
cepts, tools and techniques of real chemists. Campers will start by learning lab techniques
and safety procedures, and then use these to mix crazy concoctions and chemical combos.
Kids even get fun lab gear to take home! Appropriate for students entering grades 2 – 5

                                         N.A.S.A.
Set your future space explorers on a trajectory from our Earth’s atmosphere to the outer
reaches of our solar system! This hands-on program brings them closer to the stars, plan-
ets, comets, and more. They learn about living in space, getting away from gravity, and
looking for space phenomena. Campers also build and launch their own rockets! This camp
was developed in partnership with NASA. Appropriate for students entering grades 2 – 5

                                NATURE ADVENTURE
Explore the natural world and the adaptations that allow birds and beasts to thrive. There
is a new and different fun take-home project each day. Make plaster casts of animal tracks.
Learn how animals protect themselves: survive icy cold like a polar bear and dissect oysters
to see how they resist an annoying itch. Study the feeding habits of owls and look at the
animal bones they leave behind. Appropriate for students entering grades 2 – 5

                                SCIENCE EXPLORERS
This is Mad Science’s super science sampler - explore the world of science with a different
set of fun science topics each day. Campers will experiment with super-strong magnets
and have a “hair-raising” experience while learning about electricity. They will play tricks
on their senses by experimenting with their taste buds and manipulating sound waves.
Kids will investigate light waves, explore the properties of color, and then baffle their eyes
by exploring optical illusions. They will also play with cool science toys and figure out how
they work and analyze the amazing properties of slime. Projects that campers will make
and take home include a periscope, an electric Newtonian color wheel, floating magnets,
a static electricity stick, a superball, a color-changing “heat sheet”, and more!
Appropriate for students entering grades 2 – 5

SCIENCE MYSTERIES & FANTASTIC FORCES
This super science sampler lets kids investigate several science topics each day with cool
take-home projects. Kids will be engineers, chemists, and stunt pilots! Your Mad Scientists
will be shocked by what they learn about electricity, blown away by their experiments with
air pressure, and use simple machines to build a rocket car.
Appropriate for students entering grades 2 – 5

                               SECRET AGENT LAB
Calling all agents! This camp is part forensics and part “spy science”.
Step into the shoes of a detective—uncover the science involved in
evidence gathering and analysis. Students will create, collect, and
analyze evidence and discover what skills are necessary as a crime
scene lab technician. They examine clues and get hot on the trail of
a culprit, and then connect the dots using science to help solve a crime in a hands-on inves-
tigation. From edible messages and decoding clues, students will have the opportunity to
check out some of the skills that spies must master as they journey into the world of espi-
onage. Take home projects include an ultraviolet Fingerprint Finder kit, Spyglasses that let
you secretly watch people who are behind you, Spy-noculars, a Secret Code Breaker, and
an Inspecti-kit for evidence collection. Appropriate for students entering grades 2 – 5
