Rachel SmithMessage from the Conference Planning
Committee Chair
to the Kentucky Public Library
Association’s first virtual conference – A Common Good, A
Common Ground: Reboot. Our Conference Planning
Committee is so proud to bring this innovative, affordable,
and socially distant professional development experience
to our public library community.
As you plan the sessions you’ll attend, the colleagues you’ll network with, and the ways you
will engage in the virtual conference experience, we would like to give a deeply felt
recognition to 2020-21 KPLA Chair Jessica Powell and the 2020 Conference Planning
Committee. So much of what we present to you at KPLA 2021 Virtual is borne out of the
hard work that Jessica and last year’s committee devoted to planning a conference that
unfortunately had to be cancelled in the last days leading up to the outbreak of COVID-19.
Thus, we borrowed last year’s conference theme and simply, as you can guess, rebooted it!
The last year has presented many challenges, but if we look close enough, we can surely see
some incredible triumphs. Adapting programs, pivoting to curbside, and going virtual in
every sense of the term, Kentucky’s public libraries have risen to the occasion. We have
much to celebrate and we hope this conference serves as such a reminder.
Until we can see you in-person next year, the Conference Planning Committee and I wish you
a fantastic KPLA 2021 Virtual!

Contemporary Issues Louis Kelly, Commonwealth Attorney, 54th Circuit, Office of the Commonwealth Attorney
Many library directors and managers struggled with understanding how to make policies for their
staff during the COVID-19 epidemic. Guidance from government agencies could be confusing,

come to rely upon. Louis Kelly will help give you some ideas on making permanent policies that
will help guide you and your staff during the next pandemic...which we all hope never comes.

Emily Nimsakont, Cataloging and Metadata Trainer, Amigos Library Services
Have you ever tried to write a how-to manual or other documentation for your library? Have you
gotten overwhelmed trying to figure out where to start, or too busy keeping up with your day-to-
day work to take a step back and document it? Most of us know that documentation is important
to continuity of processes in library work, but it’s an easy thing to write off as too hard, or to set
