Vigilance Matters when
Viruses Vary - Variants
Contagious Variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes
     COVID-19

      ▪ The United States is in the fourth week of an upward trend in COVID-19
          cases.
      ▪ lifting of social distancing and mask mandates in some areas could be
          contributing to this increase.
      ▪ This increase could also be due to the presence of more contagious variants
of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, which is why it is important
          to remain vigilant.
      ▪ Viruses change constantly through mutation, so new variants are expected
to occur as the virus spreads.

22
Contagious Variants of SARS-CoV-2, the Virus that Causes
     COVID-19

      ▪ CDC recently introduced a classification system to rank the risk of the
variants that we are monitoring, similar to the way the weather service
          ranks hurricanes.
      ▪ The classification system characterizes emerging variants based on their
characteristics, the resulting actions, and consequences for public health.
      ▪ CDC’s three classification categories include:
          ▪ Variants of Interest (VOI)
          ▪ Variants of Concern (VOC) and
          ▪ Variants of High Consequence (VOHC)

23
Contagious Variants of SARS-CoV-2, the Virus that Causes
     COVID-19

      ▪ Studies are underway to determine whether variants are more
transmissible, cause more severe illness, or are likely to evade immunity
brought on by prior illness or vaccination.
      ▪ Variants
          ▪ B.1.1.7 19,554 cases in US 52 jurisdictions
(first discovered in British/UK – most common strain in the U.S.)

          ▪ B.1.351 424 36 jurisdictions
               (first discovered in South Africa)

          ▪ P.1 434 28 jurisdictions
               (first discovered in Brazil)

24
Contagious Variants of SARS-CoV-2, the Virus that Causes
     COVID-19

     ▪ In addition to the three (3) well known variants, the CDC is monitoring two
         additional variants:

         ▪ the B.1.427 and B.1.429

         ▪ both originating in California.

CDC Warns Americans against
Travel to Canada, Even if They’re
Vaccinated
CDC Guidance on Travel to Canada

      ▪ Canada is currently in the throes of a third COVID-19 wave and is reportedly
on track to outpace the U.S. in terms of its rate of new infections relative to
          the overall population.
      ▪ The trend is so worrisome that the CDC has updated Canada’s travel
advisory (a Level Four—the highest possible risk category) to include a
warning that even fully vaccinated Americans should not risk venturing
          north of the U.S. border.
      ▪ The change was made on the same day that the CDC released new travel
guidelines for vaccinated Americans in which the agency said that those
who are fully vaccinated can safely move about the country.

27
CDC Guidance on Travel to Canada

      ▪ “Because of the current situation in Canada, even fully vaccinated travelers
may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants and should avoid
all travel to Canada,” the CDC website now reads.
      ▪ “If you must travel to Canada, get fully vaccinated before travel. All
travelers should wear a mask, stay 6 feet from others, avoid crowds, and
          wash their hands.” (CDC website)
      ▪ The infiltration of more contagious, and possibly even more deadly, viral
variants is being blamed for causing Canada’s third COVID-19 wave.
According to a Vice report, Canada is one of the world’s only countries to be
battling significant outbreaks of three different variants at the same time.

28
CDC Guidance on Travel to Canada

      ▪ Just as Americans are being warned to stay away, Canada’s health officials
          are also urging Canadians to avoid nonessential travel within the country;
although experts are saying that tighter travel restrictions may not be
enough at this point to contain the spread of the highly transmissible
          variants.
