MATILDA’S
FIREWORK EXPERIMENT
Matilda’s brain is a powerful thing with unlimited potential. Try this terrific trick to create some
magic like Matilda and show off your science skills.
Warning: No real-life fireworks are needed to complete this trick!
YOU WILL NEED: CREATE YOUR FIREWORK:
A PLATE
STEP 1
MILK (ENOUGH TO MAKE A NICE Fill the plate with a thin layer of milk. Get an adult
BIG PUDDLE ON YOUR PLATE) to help you with this so you don’t get in trouble for
FOOD COLOURING (AS MANY spilling it everywhere!

STEP 2
WASHING UP LIQUID
Put a few drops of food colouring in the centre of
ADULT SUPERVISION the milk.
STEP 3
WHY DOES THIS WORK? Dip the end of your finger in washing up liquid.

Surface tension is a force that creates
