MATILDA’S FIREWORK EXPERIMENT Matilda’s brain is a powerful thing with unlimited potential. Try this terrific trick to create some magic like Matilda and show off your science skills. Warning: No real-life fireworks are needed to complete this trick! YOU WILL NEED: CREATE YOUR FIREWORK: A PLATE STEP 1 MILK (ENOUGH TO MAKE A NICE Fill the plate with a thin layer of milk. Get an adult BIG PUDDLE ON YOUR PLATE) to help you with this so you don’t get in trouble for FOOD COLOURING (AS MANY spilling it everywhere! COLOURS AS YOU WANT) STEP 2 WASHING UP LIQUID Put a few drops of food colouring in the centre of ADULT SUPERVISION the milk. STEP 3 WHY DOES THIS WORK? Dip the end of your finger in washing up liquid. Unlike Matilda, we didn’t make this STEP 4 happen with the power of magic, but Touch the centre of the milk with your instead we used the power of science. soapy finger. This is an experiment involving surface tension. STEP 5 Surface tension is a force that creates a layer on top of liquid like a thin sheet Watch the firework of elastic. MAKE YOUR OWN FANTASTIC FOX Mr Fox is a rather brilliant friend and companion to everyone around him- that’s what makes him so fantastic! Follow the instructions to make your very own fantastic fox to keep with you. Don’t forget to print this single sided, or you might cut out your instructions! 1 Colour in the square on the next page in orange. Then, carefully cut out the square. Make sure you have an adult on hand to help if you need. 2 3 Turn over the cut out square so that the Bring the top corner to the bottom corner white side is facing up. and fold the paper in half. 4 5 Fold the left corner to right corner and Fold the left and right triangle edges then unfold.
