WELCOME                                         David Crain

GLORY BE TO JESUS
1. Glory be to Jesus 4. Abel’s blood for vengeance
who in bitter pains                  pleaded to the skies;
poured for me the life blood but the blood of Jesus
from his sacred veins. for our pardon cries.

2. Grace and life eternal 5. Oft as it is sprinkled
in that blood I find; on our guilty hearts,
blessed be his compassion, Satan in confusion
infinitely kind.                      terror-struck departs.

3. Blessed through endless ages 6. Oft as earth exulting
be the precious stream, wafts its praise on high,
which from endless torment angel hosts rejoicing
did the world redeem. make their glad reply.
                   7. Let us lift our voices,
                   swell the mighty flood;
                   louder still and louder
                   praise the precious blood.
                                                                 Anon

SCRIPTURE SENTENCES

To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses , though we
have rebelled against him, neither have we obeyed the voice of the
Lord our God to walk in his laws, which he set before us.
                                                    Daniel 9:9-10

But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners
Christ died for us.
                                                      Romans 5:8
8am Good Friday 15 April 2022 Morning Prayer according to The Book of Common Prayer with St Mark's Choir
Beloved, we are come together in the presence of almighty God
and of the whole company of heaven to offer unto him through our
Lord Jesus Christ our worship and praise and thanksgiving; to make
confession of our sins; to pray, as well for others as for ourselves,
that we may know more truly the greatness of God's love and shew
forth in our lives the fruits of his grace; and to ask on behalf of all
men such things as their well-being doth require.

Wherefore let us kneel in silence, and remember God's presence
with us now. Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires
of our own hearts.
We have offended against thy holy laws.
We have left undone those things
which we ought to have done;
and we have done those things
which we ought not to have done;
and there is no health in us.
But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders.
Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults.
Restore thou them that are penitent;
according to thy promises declared unto mankind
in Christ Jesu our Lord.
And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of thy holy name. Amen.
8am Good Friday 15 April 2022 Morning Prayer according to The Book of Common Prayer with St Mark's Choir
Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who desireth not the death of a sinner,
but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live;
and hath given power, and commandment, to his ministers
to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent,
the absolution and remission of their sins:
he pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent
and unfeignedly believe his holy gospel.
Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his
Holy Spirit,
that those things may please him which we do at this present;
and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy;
so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Our Father, which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Choir and clergy stand

O Lord, open thou our lips
       and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
       O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
        and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
        world without end. Amen.
Praise ye the Lord.
        The Lord's name be praised.

PSALM 22:1-20 Sung by the Choir Congregation remains seated

My God, my God, look upon me, why hast thou forsaken me: and
        art so far from my health, and from the words of my complaint?
O my God I cry in the day-time but thou hearest not: and in the
        night season also I take no rest.
And thou continuest holy: O thou worship of Israel
Our fathers hoped in thee: they trusted in thee and thou didst deliver them.
They called upon thee and were holpen: they put their trus in thee
        and were not confounded.
But as for me, I am a worm and no man: a very scorn of men and
        the outcast of the people.
All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out their lips
        and shake their heads saying,
He trusted in God that he would deliver him: let him deliver him
        if he will have him.
But thou art he that took me out of my mother’s womb: thou wast
        my hope, when I hanged yet upon my mother’s breasts.
I have been left unto thee ever since I was born: thou art my God
        even from my mother’s womb.
I go not from me, for trouble is hard at hand: and there is none to help me
Many oxen are come about me: fat bulls of Basan close me in on every side
They gape upon me with their mouths: as it were a ramping and a
        roaring lion.
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my
        heart also in the midst of my body is even like melting wax.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my
        gums: and thou shalt bring me into the dust of death.
For many dogs are come about me: and the council of the wicked
        layeth siege against me.
They pierced my hands and my feet, I may tell all my bones: they
        stand staring and looking upon me.
They part my garments among them: and cast lots upon my vesture.
But be not thou far from me O Lord: thou art my succour haste
        thee to help me.
Deliver my soul from the sword: my darling from the power of the dog.

ISAIAH 52:13- 53:12                               Toby Forwood
See, my servant shall prosper;
   he shall be exalted and lifted up,
   and shall be very high.
14 Just as there were many who were astonished at him

   —so marred was his appearance, beyond human semblance,
   and his form beyond that of mortals—
15 so he shall startle many nations;

   kings shall shut their mouths because of him;
for that which had not been told them they shall see,
   and that which they had not heard they shall contemplate.
1 Who has believed what we have heard?

   And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,

   and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
   nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by others;

   a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity;
and as one from whom others hide their faces
   he was despised, and we held him of no account.
4
  Surely he has borne our infirmities
   and carried our diseases;
yet we accounted him stricken,
   struck down by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions,
   crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole,
   and by his bruises we are healed.
6
  All we like sheep have gone astray;
   we have all turned to our own way,
and the LORD has laid on him
   the iniquity of us all.
7
  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
   yet he did not open his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
   and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
   so he did not open his mouth.
8 By a perversion of justice he was taken away.

   Who could have imagined his future?
For he was cut off from the land of the living,
   stricken for the transgression of my people.
9 They made his grave with the wicked

   and his tomb with the rich,
although he had done no violence,
   and there was no deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him with pain.

When you make his life an offering for sin,
   he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days;
through him the will of the LORD shall prosper.
11    Out of his anguish he shall see light;
he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge.
   The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous,
   and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great,

   and he shall divide the spoil with the strong;
because he poured out himself to death,
   and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
   and made intercession for the transgressors.

O SACRED HEAD, SORE WOUNDED
1. O sacred Head, sore wounded, 3. In this your bitter Passion,
with grief and shame weighed down, Good Shepherd, think of me,
O kingly head surrounded Look on me with compassion,
with thorns, your only crown: Unworthy though I be:
death’s shadows rise before you, Beneath your cross abiding
the glow of life decays; For ever I would rest,
yet hosts of heaven adore you In your dear love confiding,
and tremble as they gaze. And with your presence blessed.
2. What language shall I borrow
                                          4. Lord, be my consolation,
to praise you, heavenly friend,
                                          my shield when death is near;
for this your dying sorrow,
                                          remind me of your Passion,
your mercy without end?
                                          be with me when I fear.
Such agony and dying!
                                          My eyes shall then behold you,
Such love to sinners free!
                                          upon your cross shall dwell,
O Christ, all grace supplying,
                                          my heart by faith enfold you;
Turn your face on me.
                                          and who dies thus, dies well.
                                                    Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676)

MARK 15:16-20                                 Pamela Lee
16
   Then the soldiers led him into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the
governor’s headquarters); and they called together the whole cohort.
17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns

into a crown, they put it on him. 18 And they began saluting him, “Hail,
King of the Jews!” 19 They struck his head with a reed, spat upon him,
and knelt down in homage to him. 20 After mocking him, they stripped
him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led
him out to crucify him.

CHOIR - God So Loved the World John Stainer
John 3:16
God so loved the world
God so loved the world
That he gave his only begotten Son,
That whoso believeth, believeth in Him
Should not perish, should not perish
But have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world
To condemn the world.
For God sent not his Son into the world
To condemn the world.
But that the world through him might be saved.

THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father almighty,
        maker of heaven and earth:

And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord.
        who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
        born of the Virgin Mary,
        suffered under Pontius Pilate,
        was crucified, dead, and buried.
        He descended into hell;
        The third day he rose again from the dead;
        he ascended into heaven,
        and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty;
        from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
        the holy catholic Church;
        the communion of saints;
        the forgiveness of sins;
        the resurrection of the body,
        and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord be with you.
       And with thy spirit.

Let us pray. (Please kneel or sit for prayer)

Lord, have mercy upon us.
       Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us.
       And grant us thy salvation.
O Lord, save the Queen.
       And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.
Endue thy ministers with righteousness.
       And make thy chosen people joyful.
O Lord, save thy people.
       And bless thine inheritance.
Give peace in our time, O Lord.
       Because there is none other that fighteth for us,
       but only thou, O God.
O God, make clean our hearts within us.
       And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.
Collect of the Day
Almighty God, who through thine only-begotten Son Jesus Christ
hast overcome death, and opened unto us the gate of everlasting
life: We humbly beseech thee, that as by thy special grace
preventing us thou dost put into our minds good desires, so by thy
continual help we may bring the same to good effect; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy
Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen

The Collect for Peace
O God, who art the author of peace and lover of concord,
in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life,
whose service is perfect freedom;
defend us thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies;
that we, surely trusting in thy defence,
may not fear the power of any adversaries;
through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

The Collect for Grace
O Lord, our heavenly Father,
almighty and everlasting God,
who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day;
defend us in the same with thy mighty power;
and grant that this day we fall into no sin,
neither run into any kind of danger,
but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance,
to do always that is righteous in thy sight;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
ANTHEM Praise to Thee Lord Jesus Music: Schutz
Praise to thee Lord Jesus who in bitter pain
on the cross did suffer and for our sake wast slain.
Thou reign’st with God the Father in eternity.
Lead us erring sinners unto heaven and thee
Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison.

PRAYERS (please remain seated)

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost,
be with us all evermore. Amen

NOTICES

THERE IS A GREEN HILL FAR AWAY
1. There is a green hill far away, 3. He died that we might be forgiven,
outside the city wall, he died to make us good,
where the dear Lord was crucified that we might go at last to heaven,
who died to save us all. saved by his precious blood.

2. We may not know, we cannot tell 4. There was no other good enough
what pains he had to bear, to pay the price of sin,
but we believe it was for us he only could unlock the gate
he hung and suffered there. of heaven, and let us in.

                         5. O dearly, dearly has he loved
                         and we must love him too,
                         and trust in his redeeming blood,
                         and try his works to do.

SERMON                                Rev Dr Michael Jensen
WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS
1. When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

3. See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

4. Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
