A 5-Minute Desk Stretch Routine For Tight Hips And
Lower Back
If you sit for most of the day, your hip flexors stay shortened and your lower back often ends up carrying the load. The
good news is that you do not need a gym or a long session to feel better. Five minutes, done once or twice a day, can
make a noticeable difference to how your hips and back feel by the evening.

1. Seated figure-four stretch (1 minute). Sit tall, cross your right ankle over your left knee and gently hinge forward
from the hips until you feel a stretch in the outer right hip. Keep your back long rather than rounding. Hold for 30
seconds, then switch sides.

2. Standing hip flexor stretch (1 minute). Stand up and take a small step back with your right foot. Tuck your pelvis
slightly under and squeeze the right glute. You should feel the front of the right hip open. Hold for 30 seconds per side,
breathing slowly.

3. Seated spinal twist (1 minute). Sit near the front of your chair, place your right hand on the outside of your left knee
and rotate gently to the left. Lengthen through the top of your head on every inhale and twist a little further on every
exhale. Thirty seconds per side.

4. Cat-cow at the desk (1 minute). With hands on your knees, round your back as you exhale and arch gently as you
inhale. Move slowly and let the movement come from the whole spine.

5. Forward fold (1 minute). Stand with soft knees and let your upper body hang toward the floor. Nod your head yes and
no to release the neck, then roll up one vertebra at a time.

A few tips make this routine work better. Never force a stretch into pain; aim for a mild, comfortable tension. Breathe
slowly through the nose, because a calm breath helps muscles relax. Most importantly, be consistent: a short daily
routine beats a long session once a week.
