History Books in Canada
Back in 2003 when I was doing research for another
book, A Compendium of the Catholic Health
Association of Canada, I came across an old document
listing the Catholic hospitals founded in Canada by the
different congregations of women religious. It set me on
a journey which has continued to this very day, some
eighteen years later.
Initially I updated the original list which was compiled
in 1949. Then I began to collect and to add historical
books and booklets to the small collection in the
office library. In time I started scanning and digitizing
this collection. From the very beginning my hope was to digitize a 100 or so books that might
represent the health care ministry of the Sisters in every province of Canada. But how does one
go about searching for books when you do not have the title? At the time the world wide web
was just beginning to become a burgeoning research tool.
Rather fortuitously, I discovered the bibliography, Histories of Canadian Hospitals and Schools
of Nursing, created by David S. Crawford, FCLIP, Librarian emeritus from the Osler Library of the
History of Medicine at McGill University. This discovery began a collaboration between David and I
that continues to this day. Not only did David S. Crawford research and compile a comprehensive
and exhaustive bibliography of hospital history books (both pubic and faith-based), he also collected
printed copies of the books for deposit in the Osler Library of the History of Medicine.
Because of David’s monumental achievement, my task became easier. In searching for history
books on Catholic hospitals and schools of nursing I need only refer to his bibliography. The
Catholic Hospital Digital History Book Collection owes a debt to him, and because of that debt, the
digital collection has grown to over 500 documents that are all available for viewing online. The
following Bibliography of Catholic Hospital History Books in Canada is largely taken from the full
bibliography compiled by David S. Crawford.
• All books and booklets in the following bibliography that appear in “black” are part of the digital
collection and can be searched for online (www.chac.ca and click on “Resources”).
• A book that appears in “blue” with a star [] in front of it is a document that the collection has
yet to find and digitize. Should you know of the whereabouts of such a document and wish to
donate it to the collection please use the “Contact Us” link on the Catholic Health Alliance of
Canada web site [www.chac.ca] to let me know.
• As well, should you know of a book or booklet about a Catholic Hospital or Catholic School of
Nursing in Canada that does not appear in this bibliography, we would also appreciate that you
contact us with that information.
