 Shorts for Hospice 2021
What and When?
It will be on Monday 21st June, the winter solstice, aka the shortest day of the year!

So yeah it’ll be mid-winter, but open your summer clothes drawer and find some BIG SHORTS - LITTLE SHORTS
- LOUD SHORTS and fundraise for North Haven Hospice.

Fundraising for a local charity by wearing shorts in the middle of winter? Yeah, let’s do this!

Life is short. Live every moment !

Who can take part?
The short answer is: anyone. In fact, the more people who take part, the better, and the more fun it will be.

Organise to wear colourful shorts to work, to school, to your community group or service club meeting, or
simply wear shorts at home or wherever you happen to be for the day.

If you’re short of shorts, there are plenty for sale at our Hospice Shop in Whangarei (corner of Robert St and
James St). And, it shouldn’t matter if you’re a bit short of money, as they’re very affordable!

How does the fundraising happen?
We encourage businesses/organisations, schools, service clubs, community groups, aged residential care
facilities to encourage staff, students, members or residents to wear shorts on the day … AND in doing so,
fundraise for North Haven Hospice however you can. See ideas below.

Ways to fundraise:
Simply ask everyone to wear shorts on Monday 21st June and bring a cash donation. This can be for a set
amount (e.g. gold coin) or an open amount.

Run a second-hand shorts sale for colleagues who aren’t wearing shorts.

Ask your workplace to match the money that you raise (e.g. dollar for dollar or $1 for every $2).

Run a raffle for a prize (e.g. gift basket, or ask the boss to donate an annual leave day and raffle it to staff).

If you’re at home, wear shorts for the day and make a donation to North Haven Hospice (see page 3).

Start a Givealittle or GoFundMe page where your group and supporters can fundraise online.

On the day:
Have fun showing off your shorts!

Bring or bake and share shortbread for morning tea.

Run a second-hand shorts sale for colleagues who aren’t wearing shorts.

Challenge another team at work or another business to wear their shorts and then meet at morning tea or
lunch (or simply share photos) to compare shorts and even compete for prizes.

    Hold a shorts fashion parade.

Take photos of yourself / yourselves in your shorts and share them on your social media pages (remember
to tag us) and/or send your pics to fundraising@northhavenhospice.org.nz

Follow the fun on the North Haven Hospice page on Facebook and Instagram.

North Haven Hospice key info, facts & figures

North Haven Hospice, Te Korowai Humarie, provides specialist palliative care for people of any age and
with any life-limiting illness, and support for their families/whanau and carers.

Hospice is about quality of life, helping patients live every moment in whatever way is important to them.
Our care is holistic, embracing people’s physical, emotional, social, cultural and spiritual needs.

We are a community resource and there is no charge for our service, which is available to anyone in the
Whangarei District, and the south-east of Kaipara District including Mangawhai, Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka,
Topuni and Oruawharo - a total area of 3150 square-kilometres, and with a population of 100,000.

The majority of patients receive our care entirely in their homes or place of residence. Others may have a
short admission to our In-Patient Unit (IPU), mostly for symptom management before returning home.

In the 2019/20 year, we provided care and support for 542 patients, with on-average 117 patients in our
care at any one time. Whilst around three-quarters of patients have a cancer diagnosis, one-quarter have
other life-limiting illnesses such as disease of the heart, lung, kidney, liver, or motor neurone disease.

For patients, a referral to Hospice does not necessarily mean that death is imminent; rather that they have
symptoms which are complex and need specialist palliative care to improve their quality of life.

We offer a 24/7 telephone support service and our specialist nurses, doctors, pharmacist, and family
support team liaise closely with patients’ General Practice teams, District Nurses and other healthcare
providers. We also provide a palliative care service at Whangarei Hospital.

North Haven Hospice is only partly Government-funded, via Northland DHB. The gap between the DHB
funding received and the actual cost to provide the service we do is $1.9 million for the 2020/21 year. This
is what we need to fundraise, which means we need to fundraise $36,500 every week.

Fundraising is essential. We rely on donations, community fundraising events, business support, grants,
bequests, and Hospice Shop revenue. Every dollar that is raised here, stays here, supporting local people
facing the end of life and during bereavement, and providing an essential community health service.

We also rely on the incredible contribution by our volunteers who selflessly give their time, skills and
knowledge. The majority of volunteers serve at our Hospice Shops, whilst others are based at the Hospice
premises at Tikipunga and perform nursing support duties in our inpatient unit, reception, gardening,
patient biography service, massage therapy, car valet and patient transport, etc.

Our vision: Compassionate communities that work together supporting people to live and die
well | Hapori aroha e mahi tahi ki te tautoko i te iwi ki ora me te mate pai.
