ADAPTIVE RECREATION CENTER - SABRINA COHEN FOUNDATION
WELCOME
The Sabrina Cohen Foundation (SCF) is a 501c3 nonprofit
organization dedicated to providing adaptive fitness and
recreational programs that offer a better quality of life to
individuals living with disabilities and other lifestyle
challenges.

“Putting Lives Back into Motion.”
ADAPTIVE RECREATION CENTER - SABRINA COHEN FOUNDATION
ABOUT OUR FOUNDER

Sabrina Cohen is a native of Miami Beach, Florida, who
survived a severe spinal cord injury from a car accident in
1992. She has been using a wheelchair ever since and has
used her voice over the years to educate others about
paralysis. Today, Sabrina is a nationally recognized figure in
the field of disability health and fitness advocacy.

In 2006, Sabrina established SCF to raise funds for research,
later introducing quality of life initiatives to its mission to
improve daily living for the disabled community. A
motivational speaker since her injury, she has appeared on
CNN, The Today Show, Ocean Drive Magazine and has been
recognized many times for her outstanding efforts on behalf
of the community and government. Sabrina is a national
winner in Self Magazine’s “Women Doing Good” competition,
a WebMD American Health Hero and winner of the
“Overcoming Adversity” category in the America Inspired
National Competition.

In 2012, Sabrina Cohen approached Miami THE ISSUE
Beach Officials with a novel idea: In most communities, the beach is a "no-go zone" for people
with disabilities because it is too difficult to navigate for
someone with mobility issues or visual impairment. The sand is
LET’S CREATE A BEACH FOR ALL. a natural barrier to entry for wheelchairs, causing wheels to
get stuck if attempted to traverse over.

DID YOU KNOW? Approximately 56 million Americans

have a disability. The obesity rate for children with disabilities in
the U.S. is 38% higher than for children without disabilities. Adults
with disabilities are physically active about half as often as adults
without disabilities. By the year 2030, 71.5 million Baby Boomers
will be over the age of 65 and demanding services and
environments that address their age-related physical changes.

Today, SCF’s mission revolves around the foundation’s
largest undertaking to date – a partnership with the City
of Miami Beach that includes multiple initiatives to
provide disabled individuals, veterans, children with
special needs and the elderly the same perks of living in
South Florida as everyone else…

Access to the beach and ocean.

In the summer of 2016, SCF launched "Adaptive Beach Days," a twice-monthly
program at 6475 Collins Avenue that includes adaptive surfing, ocean therapy,
yoga/meditation and art therapy. A team of qualified staff and volunteers work
together to stage an entire area of the beach to make it accessible. Creating a
platform of access decks across the sand, setting up tents, transferring participants
into beach wheelchairs and using other adaptive beach equipment for lounging
and comfort make it all possible.

TO DATE, "ADAPTIVE BEACH DAYS" HAS WELCOMED:
  • Thousands of residents and visitors from all over South Florida
  • Tourists from France, Turkey, India, Italy and around the world
  • Individuals with disabilities of all ages, seniors, veterans and children w/ special needs
  • Hundreds of volunteers, including high school and college students, physical therapists and ocean rescue staff
  • Community partnerships and corporate sponsors

In addition to creating beach access for all, on October 27, 2017,
the City of Miami Beach proudly opened the gates to its first fully
accessible playground in partnership with SCF.

Consisting of 13 multi-use play structures and seven exercise
structures, the public space was designed to enable children of all
abilities to play together. Built with residents and visitors with
disabilities in mind, the city constructed a unique and tailored ADA
accessible dune crossing in accordance with the park’s close
proximity to the beach at 6500 Collins Avenue.

In honor of Cohen’s dedication to ensure people with disabilities
enjoy life to their fullest capability, the city commission named
the playground: Sabrina’s Playground.

NEXT STEPS

With the success of the “Adaptive Beach Days” program, “Sabrina’s Playground,” word of mouth and social media, the
Sabrina Cohen Foundation has attracted local, national and international attention. Today, SCF is expanding from
“pop-up” programming to building a permanent Center for year round beach access, providing even greater
opportunities for the disabled community. The development of an Adaptive Recreation Center will be a first-of-a-kind
oceanfront facility on the east coast catering exclusively to individuals living with disabilities and other lifestyle
challenges. Visitors will indulge in a uniquely empowering experience, combining indoor and beachside physical fitness
with recreational activities that promote mental and spiritual wellness in one central, safe and comfortable location.

On October 31, 2017, Miami Beach City Officials voted UNANIMOUSLY to allow the Sabrina Cohen Foundation to begin
raising funds for the nation’s first fully accessible "Adaptive Recreation Center." The Center will be located on
oceanfront property at 5301 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida.

CENTER PLANS
On July 2, 2018, the Miami Beach City
Commission approved the concept design
plans for the proposed Sabrina Cohen
Foundation Adaptive Recreation Center in
Mid-Beach. Kobi Karp Architects designed the
facility with two stories of program and
fitness space, a rooftop deck and an
understory with storage space for adaptive
beach equipment.

The Center will be the pinnacle of a decade of
advocacy, allowing SCF to better serve the
community it caters to on an ongoing basis
for decades to come. SCF’s overall mission
will expand to include management and
operation of the Center on a full-time, day-
to-day basis, as outlined in the Management
Agreement between SCF and the City of
Miami Beach.

A vital component of the center will be an iconic and
architecturally distinguished ramp that leads to every
floor of the building and provides the direct link to
beach access. This universal design feature will allow
users in wheelchairs (and on foot) to access the
multiple floors of the Center at any given time, with the
freedom of no barriers. Much more than just a ramp,

ACCESS RAMP this Pathway will be an integral and smart way of
accommodating people of all abilities without the
