CARessentials CARessentials Maintaining a bright outlook. Headlights guide you while on the road, so it’s highly important to keep them in perfect condition, shining bright and clear to provide vital illumination along the way. Here are a few tips on how to maintain a bright outlook. How to keep your headlights in the finest condition? After a few years of ownership, you may notice that your car’s headlights have started to dim, and may not illuminate the road as brightly as before. The lens might start to look a bit hazy, or the bulbs might require replacement. Ineffective headlights can become a safety hazard, as they significantly reduce the amount of light that can be projected, compromising visibility at night. Headlight lenses become hazy for a number of reasons, but mainly as a result of being exposed to the elements. The lenses come with a clear coat of protection, but this is worn away over time by dirt and dust particles that are picked up while driving. Plus, there is oxidisation from ultra-violet (UV) rays. As a result, the headlights may end up turning yellow or foggy, and that affects the light being projected through them. In addition to that, the watertight seals around the headlights may become damaged due to wear and tear, allowing water droplets to enter the lens and causing internal condensation, which might impair the light’s effectiveness. As for headlight bulbs, in general, they will require replacing with time. Even if they still light up, it does not mean that they will be working in tip-top condition. For this reason, we highly recommend checking on your headlights regularly to ensure that they still provide optimal illumination. This can be done every time you wash or service your car; just switch them on while parked in a dark place to see how far the lights illuminate. Taking care of your headlights’ lenses is as simple as giving them a good wash. Clean each lens with soap to remove the layer of built-up dirt that has accumulated on the surface. You can also polish them gently, by using a non-abrasive polishing product and a soft microfibre cloth. For hazy headlights, simple solutions like using toothpaste or sandpaper to polish the lens may work if the deterioration is not too serious. However, do take caution when doing so, as applying excessive pressure while polishing may cause damage to your headlights instead. As for replacing a bulb, be careful not to accidentally break a bulb holder or rip a seal, and always take precautions when dealing with electricity. In fact, for headlights that require repairs or restoration, such as those with broken seals or need to be cleaned from the inside, it is advisable to drive your car to the nearest Mercedes-Benz Cycle & Carriage Authorised Service Center. Our technicians have the required skills to not only restore your headlights to their original condition, but also to ensure that your Mercedes-Benz receives the treatment it deserves.
