What’s Happening at the Alsip Park District Congratulations to Commissioners Jackie Becker, Kathy Perretta and Jairo Gutierrez! Commissioner Jackie Becker Commissioner Kathy Perretta Commissioner Jairo Gutierrez Re-elected for a 4-year term Re-elected for a 4-year term Elected for a 2-year term On April 6, 2021, two Board Members were re-elected for a four-year term and one Board Member was elected for a two-year term. Congratulations! We thank you four time and dedication to the Alsip Park District. The Park Board of Commissioners are dedicated to serving our community! Did you know that by purchasing a youth license plate through the State of Illinois that a portion of your fee goes to youth before and after school programming? The Alsip Park District offers a Before and After School Program for our community. We are excited to announce that we have been awarded a $1,000.00 grant through the Illinois Association of Park Districts to continue to support our Before and After School Program. We are excited to share that a new rest area is being added along the Cal-Sag Trail at 127th and Route 83 thanks to the Mainstreet Organization of REALTORS, Toni Grimes, CarMarc Realty. Thanks to a $5,000.00 grant we are able to add a nice resting area along the Cal-Sag Trail that includes a game style picnic table to play a game of chess/checkers, a bike rack, a trash can, a pet waste station and a community sign board. Additional landscape is also being added to beautify the area. We hope that you will enjoy this area as you explore the Cal-Sag Trail. We are proud to partner with the Village of Alsip’s Public Works Department to offer an Alsip Tree Walk along the walking path behind the Aquatic Park. In cooperation with Great Lakes Urban Forestry Management, an additional twenty trees will be planted in this area and include an interpretive feature that will allow users to scan from their mobile devices to learn about each tree including its size, species, and Scientific name. A link will also be available to obtain additional information. This will be a great educational opportunity for our community. The Apollo Recreation Center will soon be under redevelopment. Through the Park and Recreational Facility Construction Act (PARC) grant program, part of the Governor’s Rebuild Illinois capital program, the Alsip Park District was awarded a $2,500,000.00 grant for the redevelopment of this facility. This project will expand the existing facility to include an indoor walking track, an additional multi-purpose gymnasium, an expanded fitness center, an indoor playground, additional program spaces including senior/teen areas, and seating in the existing gymnasium. Additional information is expected to be available later this summer. We are proud to offer this opportunity to our community! The Alsip Park District is a proud member of South West Special Recreation Association (SWSRA). SWSRA’s main offices are located in the Apollo Recreation Center.
