aspects of our business model are conservation and sustainability focused. Mantis has founded a
NPC, the Community Conservation Fund Africa, which raises funds for and implements community
and conservation projects. These include the procurement of sustainable products to be used and
                       sold in all Mantis properties.

 Sustainability

We upskill and employ local community members, support community projects that drive

Our Story

The story behind Mantis
Man And Nature Together Is Sustainable

We are borne of Africa.

Our first game reserve was built on a drought-ravaged and degraded farmland in Southern
Africa’s Eastern Cape region. Carefully restored and nurtured like a new-born, the neglected
land slowly came back. And so did the animals. And so did the travellers.

The inspiration was sparked. The concept of creating a collection of exceptional, individual
lifestyle experiences centred around a common unifying purpose of witnessing and preserving
our natural world is what drove Adrian Gardiner’s creation of Mantis.

With the ability to adapt to all conditions, to flourish where there is little nourishment and
blessed with a heart of a warrior, the African Praying Mantis has endured to become one of
African folklore’s most charming characters.

Imbued with innate grace and elegance, and no small measure of pugnaciousness, we were
moved to adopt this enigmatic little creature as a talisman. Today the symbol of the Mantis, and
all that this delightful creature represents can be found at unique destinations spread across
the world.

Our Planet, Our Gift, Our Responsibility
Guests who visit the 30+ Mantis Collection hotels, eco-escapes and waterways play an important
role in supporting conservation-led travel and hospitality. It’s about curated destinations, inspired
by sustainable adventures.

Conservation has always been at the foundation of Mantis, it’s even reflected in the name: Man
and Nature Together is Sustainable. It is from this that the Community Conservation Fund Africa
(CCFA) was born in 2018. A collaboration between Mantis and Accor to address the social and
environmental imbalances and find a workable solution to the growing conservation crisis facing,
not just Africa, but the world.

The CEO and Chairman of CCFA is Adrian Gardiner, well-known conservationist, philanthropist,
entrepreneur and founder of Mantis. His mantra: ‘If you take the wildlife out of Africa there will be
little to no tourism’.

CCFA, a registered non-profit company (NPC), is both a fundraising and a grant-giving organisation,
active in educating and empowering local communities to help themselves by implementing
sustainable wildlife management systems.

Our goal is to co-ordinate and support a community conservation project at each and every Mantis
property by 2022. Some already are in place, these include bee keeping and honey production,
greening the environment and training communities members as field guides. We encourage you
to join us and learn more about the project at your property, hear how it is impacting the local
community and environment. Many of these projects will give you the opportunity to become
actively involved and interact with the community.
