camalonga seeds, cinnamon bark, river rock, heliconia flower, shipibo canvas, achiote pigment,
glitter, grass rug, book “The shamans”, candle, map of Loreto area.

This exhibition project presents a series of works produced during a 2-months residency
program spent between Chazuta’s cultural center Joicy V. Bartra (San Martin Region) and the
Italian Institute for Culture in Lima - Peru.

The title of the show, inspired from the film Fitzcarraldo by Werner Herzog, highlights the
dreamlike dimension of the Peruvian indigenous cosmology and redefines its meaning
in relation to the current political context of the country. In this metaphor, the Mountain
symbolizes the power structure of the government while the Dream represents the will of the
people to oppose the spreading of its influence.

The whole project draws inspiration from the field of visual anthropology, concerned with the
social and ethnographic transformation caused by the progressive globalization.

Solo chi sogna può spostare le montagne with Arianna Spanò
Only the dreamers whoever move mountains
Audio-video installation, variable dimensions, 2017.

Video (12:23 min. in loop, HD 1080p, color, stereo); portable video-projector, tripod,
headphones.

The video is composed as a slide sequence of 46 polaroid images that trace chronologically
the travel experience in the Peruvian amazon forest during a residency period spent in Iquitos.

These photographs, originally taken in relation to a log-book diary, document the day-by-day
experience of the journey and the research for a project of the same name. In this audiovisual
narration, the analogue photography is presented in relation to the field recordings carried out
in the same places. This installation focuses the gaze upon a small video-projection, the size
of a polaroid film (9x11 cm), that establishes an intimate connection with the experience of
traveling in the Amazon region. The photographic content is sustained by an immersive sound
compositions that complete the visual narrative through a single pair of headphones.

Libro di vetta / Summit book
Site-specific installation, variable dimensions, 2018.

Sculpture in marble (arabescato cervaiole, dim. 100x110x70cm.); steel cord, sling hook.

Environmental entropy and landscape Anthropocene, recurring motives in our work, are
evident in the altered image of the Apuan Alps - a place of historic significance for the industry
of marble extraction. The presence of hundreds of mines in this mountain region denounces
the massive extraction activity that sculpts, on a macroscopic scale, the morphology of the
landscape. This transformation of the natural body, fluid and continuous, into an excavation
mine, rigid and fragmented, is a process that inspired our conceptual approach to the sculptural
practice.

Archive photography of Versilia mountains, from the beginning of the last century, compared
to images of the excavation mines that populate the same region nowadays, have sparked an
artistic research that aims to reconstruct and preserve the memory of this landscape.

Cervaiole, an active excavation mine at high altitude, testifies the arduous and steep endeavor
to seize and conquest this elevated peak of Altissimo mountain. Roads, passes, tracks, breaches
become anthropic traces of a centenary mining activity. The invisible presence of the summit
lingers in the historic memory and perception of the local community whose economy relies
on the marble industry.
study for Green Observatory with Pool
Installation, variable dimensions, 2018.

Sound sculpture (ficus tree, cube vase, soil, player, stereo speakers, amplifier, audio cable,
electric cable, grow light, arduino, red filter);
Video (03:12min. in loop, HD 1080p, color, stereo), 2018.

Pool is created with the technique of video-compositing, employing the green-screen
method to digitally extrapolate and replace the green color in the video image. To shoot the
vegetal green of plants, that blends with the technical green background, is an operation that
aims to blur, aesthetically and conceptually, the notion of limit in the animistic vision of nature.

In Pool, the plants become protagonists in a tableau vivant composition, reclaiming their
role of sentient beings opposed to scenographic objects. The background image, flooding
into the green foliage, reveals the aquatic environment of the soil: there we see a myriad of
microorganisms that execute complex choreographies in accelerated rhythms. Projected at
large, this microscopic scale of reality becomes a mirror image of the relational processes in life.

Library
Installation, variable dimensions, 2017.

2 portable projectors, digital frames, digital presenter, light-box, neon lights and usb-led lights,
mixer, 2 amplifiers, 2 speakers, sound transducer, 2 shotgun microphones, 4 piezo microphones,
audio/video cables, multi-sockets, 5 plants in vases, irrigation system, transparent tube, 4
drippers, small hydro-pomp, plastic container, library furniture, small fridge, selection of 10
albums/manuals/catalogs of art, gardening, botanics and landscape architecture.

The extension of the word Library encompasses new practices of cataloging. These
associations confer new meanings on the objects and, in their conceptual configuration, speak
of multiplicity.

In this installation, the attention falls on the simultaneity of converging phenomena: the electric
signal of the sound of water runs parallel to the irrigation system; plants are taken care of and
arranged in relation to manuals of botanics and landscape architecture; minuscule samples,
meticulously collected from different components, enlarged reveal their structures in the light
of monitors.

The audio-visual landscape of Library meditates upon the possibility of harmonic coexistence
between nature and technology, assigning man the responsibility to maintain this delicate
balance.

Naturally artificial
Installation, variable dimensions, 2017.

7 sculptures in semi-transparent ABS plastic;
Audio (03:03:00h., WAV-mono spatialized with 3 parabolic speakers).

The project references the seven crystal systems in the mineral kingdom and elaborates
their characteristics through the use of 3D printers. To design, model and print such mineral-
like forms is a process that nullifies the temporal dimension intrinsic to these living creatures
that patiently come into being in nature.

Natural and artificial are both present in the appearance of the sculptures, but a closer
examination reveals the paradoxical co-existence of these properties. Unlike any natural
material, synthetic polymers, with their long degradation process in relation to their short
history, upset the temporal flow of our ecosystem.

The process of appropriation, through which nature reclaims matter extracted from its body, is
reflected in the artificiality of these polymeric minerals. To lend them a natural resemblance is
a symbolic gesture that restores value to the conscious use of plastic materials nowadays.

The audio installation is a 3-channel spatialization of a mono audio-recording of the 3D printing
process. Each parabolic speaker reproduces only part of the sound-spectrum dividing the track
in a hypothetical 3-axis dimension through the use of masks - images of a sectioned mineral.
The result is an organic sound, to otherwise mechanic noise, that traces dynamic relations in
the space .

In collaboration with the Museum of natural history (GE) and Alberto Barberis (sound-design).

study for Parabola with Antennae
Installation, variable dimensions, 2017.

Sculpture;
Video (5 min., HD 1080p, b/n and color, audio 2.1).

Parabola is a continuation of the project Antennae, elaborating some of the ideas that
remain underdeveloped during the long research that precedes it. Unused parts of the video
material, gathered in parallel to the research conducted at the National institute of Astrophysics
of Noto, have become the basis for a Teaser that introduces to the project Parabola.

The audio of the teaser makes use of sounds situated at the limits of the human auditory
spectrum, and those are channeled by the speaker of the sculpture. Therefore, the perception
of these sounds in the space become subjective due to the different “acoustic” and “tactile”
response to, respectively, the highest and lowest frequencies of the sonic spectrum, determining
in this way an unique experience of the soundtrack for every individual.

Where man strives to invent tools coherent to an idea of progress, culminating in the construction
of monumental machines able to fathom that which is invisible, there art intervenes to redefine
the functionality of these objects and lend new connotations to this intangible presence.

Antennae
Installazione audio-video, dimensione variabile, 2017.

Video (30 min. in loop, HD 1080p, color, stereo);
Sculpture: VLF modified antenna 1m. in diametere; supporting structure 100x100x57; screen
structure with rear projection-fabbric, black rope, 200x112x5cm;
2 Sound sculptures: modified Toa horn speakers, pvc fabbric, black rope; video-projector,
player.

The starting point of the project is the construction of a device able to scan a certain
range of electromagnetic activity which is hidden to our senses and to translate it into an
acoustic experience.

The experimental film Antennae documents every step of the project while its main objective
remains to be a visual inquiry on the ambiguous and imposing presence of various antennas
in the urban landscape: to reflect upon the role of these mysterious totem-like structures in
the context of our modern society that reveals itself to be disconnected on a more profound
level. The audio material gathered with the handcrafted antenna serves as a layout for the
film as well as an element that interacts with its visuals, thus translating the dynamics of the
hidden sound frequencies into visible glitch effects.

P.P.P.
Audio installation, variable dimensions, 2016.

Audio (01:00min., mono-channel);
Marble plate 35x15x3cm., microphone stand 160cm., modified zeppelin cover, cable, speaker
and player.

The reenactment of a monologue from Pier Paolo Pasolini’s film Teorema, meditating
upon the technique of art, is central to this audio installation in which history and fiction share
a common space. The abbreviation of the author’s initials are engraved on the surface of a
marble plate similar to a tombstone. Its style and visual impact recalls the common Italian
urban plaque designating Private Property, but this association and its implied jurisdictional
constrains are overcome by the transcendence of sound.
MONUMENTVM
Audio/Video installation, variable dimensions, 2015.

Video (18:50min., HD 1080p, color, audio 2.1);
Projector, player, headphones, 20 readymade objects.

      Nature engulfs.
It alters the morphological characteristics of the place.
There it has been achieved a subtle harmony of spirit and matter:
Two aesthetic configurations that merge and continuously reshape each other.
The cemetery becomes a garden, a forest, an eco-system:
A bed for the dead and a cradle for the life.

MONUMENTVM is an experimental film that is the result of a long-period exploration
of the monumental cemetery of Staglieno in the periphery of Genova. The numerous readymade
objects, part of the installation, are collected from the ruins caused by the floods in 2014.
