CAMUS Musical Society, based in Camberley, are delighted to be staging BAD GIRLS - a hard-
hitting show from 2007, based on the popular ITV1 prison drama series of the same name.

This version of the story, written by Maureen Chadwick and Ann McManus with music and
lyrics by Kath Gotts opened at the Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds in June 2006 and
transferred to the West End’s Garrick Theatre on 16th August 2007.

Set in the fictional HMP Larkhall, the new idealistic Wing Governor Helen Stewart battles
with the entrenched old guard of Officer Jim Fenner and his sidekick, Sylvia Hollamby.
Fenner reigns over his corrupt domain and asserts his control over the female prisoners,
encouraging sexual favours in return for preferential treatment. Tensions run high when a
tragic death on the wing leads to an angry protest from the inmates (including top dog Shell
Dockley and her runner Denny Blood, old-timer Noreen Biggs, the two Julies and King-of-
gangland’s Missus, Yvonne Atkins). It’s clear that Helen stands to lose her job over Fenner’s
misdeeds, and the race is on for the women to nail him once and for all.

This production is not suitable for children under the age of 12. Includes mature and adult
themes which some may find upsetting.

Performed at The Camberley Theatre from the 4th – 7th May 2022. Tickets will be available
from the theatre box office on 01276 707 600

DIRECTOR’S INTRO NIGHT: Wednesday 29th September 2021
The Director’s Intro night will take place at South Camberley School, at 7.30pm. If you don’t know
anything about the show, then this is your opportunity to come along and meet the team, find out about
the show and consider whether you’d like to join CAMUS for this production of Bad Girls the musical. If
you already know the show, then this is your opportunity to hear more from the Director and Musical
Director about their ‘vision’ for the show, plans for the production as a whole and to ask any questions you
might have about the auditions, characters or rehearsals. It’s also a nice social occasion where we can all
get together – let’s hope this year we won’t have to social distance from each other or maybe we’ll work
this in to the whole ‘experience’ and put you all in individual cells!

       PRE-AUDITION EVENINGS: Monday 18th and Wednesday 20th October 2021
These prep evenings are not compulsory and you do not need to prepare anything! We will be going
through the audition songs as they may be unfamiliar to you as well as talking about characterisation ready
for the auditions. We will not be doing any movement or dancing so there is no need to bring along dance
shoes, but if anyone knows Polly then you’ll know that if there’s a choreographic opportunity, then there’ll
be dancing! This is an opportunity to ask more questions and feel really comfortable / familiar with the
audition pieces before the auditions themselves.

                              AUDITIONS: Sunday 24th October 2021
Auditions will take place at South Camberley School, James Road in Camberley. Directions are attached.
Please use the school car park and wait in your car until you are called in to the audition room.
10 minute individual time slots for auditions will be allocated and we will aim to avoid hanging around.
If you are unable to make the audition date on Sunday 24th October, please don’t worry, we will be holding
alt auditions on Wednesday 27th October in the evening.

Full Company Auditions: 11.00am,
The auditions will begin with a short movement rehearsal and short singing audition, in groups, for all cast
members. The whole morning should take and no more than an hour and a half to 12.30pm. We are
looking for characters of all ages, shapes and sizes. There is going to be movement for the entire cast so
please wear comfortable clothing that you can move around in and suitable footwear.
Please be familiar with the group audition song – you don’t need to be word perfect, but obviously it helps
to have a rough idea of what you’re doing as we only have a short time.

Individual Audition times from 1.30pm for Principal / Supporting characters.
You will be asked to prepare sections of dialogue and / or song depending on the role you are auditioning
for. All of the audition pieces can be found at the back of this Audition Pack. We advise you to sing off-
book, in order to really sell the song/s to us and inhabit the characters you are portraying.
Dialogue does not need to be learned and off-book, but familiarity with the text will help you in the
audition.
    • Please arrive 10 minutes before your audition – in case we are running ahead (?!) – however,
please be prepared to wait if we are running behind.

   • The music and style of the piece is inviting and varied, so please don’t feel discouraged if your
singing/dancing is not your ‘strong’ point. There is something for everyone.

   • The main principal characters will need to devote time and energy to the piece as the characters
        rarely leave the stage.

   • There are many small speaking characters and we hope to have as many people as possible in
        individual roles.

   • Everyone will be very busy and involved in the whole show taking their individual characters to the
        next level.
Alt Auditions / Re-calls

We may need a second day for principal auditions if we don’t have enough time on the 24th or if we are
unable to make final casting decisions on the day. We will advise you if we need to call you to the
alternate date: Wednesday 27th October from 7.30pm.

Casting

The casting committee will consist of the Director, Musical Director and a member of committee from
CAMUS as an objective observer.
We will cast the principal characters on the basis of their audition with regards to singing and acting merit,
the right look and playing age (within reason). However, the needs of each character are different so we
may change the priorities for some should it be necessary to do so.

You will need energy and stamina and all-rounders who can put a song across with absolute passion,
confidence and a believable character.

You will need to give the production your full commitment. Please look at the rehearsal dates and be
honest about your availability. If you cannot make the rehearsal times please let us know before you
decide to audition and are cast as it causes more issues during the rehearsal process if we are not
forewarned – obviously illness and unforeseen absences occur and we’re flexible about this! After a year
of COVID we’ll just be pleased to be back in the rehearsal room!

                                       AUDITION / SHOW FEES

A £10 audition fee will be charged to any non-CAMUS member at the time of the audition. On successful
completion of an audition and offer of a part, this £10 fee will be deducted from your membership fee
owing and taken as the first month’s instalment.

£10 audition fee is non-refundable should you decide not to join the company for Bad Girls.

CAMUS charge a membership fee to become a part of the society or a show fee to take part in the show.
Membership is £10 a month for a minimum of 12 months after joining your first production.
Show fees are £75 per person to cover the show costs.

                                               REHEARSALS

Rehearsals will take place every Monday and Wednesday evening (7.45 – 10pm) for company members.
Please arrive for 7.30pm in order to have a social 15 minutes before we start rehearsals.

Additional Sunday afternoons nearer the show week will take place from Sunday 6th March between 2 and
5pm with a break for Easter from 11th – 24th April.

There will be a rehearsal / band call / get in at the theatre on Sunday 1st May 2022 followed by a
Technical Rehearsal on Monday 2nd May from 6pm and a Dress Rehearsal on Tuesday 3rd May from 6pm.
