We’d like Barnsley to be the ‘Best Dressed’
town during the Tour de Yorkshire and need
your help . . .
Inside we’ve got lots of ideas and suggestions you
can use to make your own bunting, street and window
dressing. We want to ‘bring out the bunting’ in style in
an effort to win the crown of Best Dressed.
Whether you’re an absolute beginner or a seasoned bunter with
crafty know-how, this pack is for you. It includes suggestions for
themed designs, motifs and colour schemes for your projects
and gives you all you need to know to compliment your very
own ‘Bunt offs’.
We want all residents, community groups, youth clubs, churches,
schools and businesses to do their bit.
Now you’re ready to get started!

It’s time to ‘GET IN GEAR’, and ‘GET CREATIVE’
and here is your pit stop of inspiration!
For all you crafty beginners we’ve gathered some basic
instructions, fun ideas and simple templates to start you off.
Those of you with a flare with thread or a passion for painting lets go to
town and show our neighbours and the watching world just how creative
‘us Barnsley folk’ can be.
THE GOLDEN RULES
1) Your bunting will be in situ for at least 2 weeks, so make it to withstand
all weathers!
2) Each bunting line should be no more than 20 metres long but you can
always make more than 1 line.
3) Please leave at least 70cms of tape at the end of your flags for attaching.
4) No staples or pins as they cut fingers and tangle up the lines.
5) Consider the environment! Test your bunting. Ensure that is won’t fray and
that bits won’t drop off. Avoid using water soluble glue to attach decorations
or flags. Please use stitch and bondaweb (on fabric) and laminate paper flags.
6) If you want your bunting back please make sure at least 1 flag in each line
has your name or group name sewn on or written on with fabric pens.
3Let’s Get

Bunting making is as simple or as complicated as you want it to be!
Before you start, ask yourself the following questions…

places (small front yards and shop windows). A good rule of thumb
is to space flags a flags width apart, but it boils down to what you
think looks good!
2 Flag shapes - are you going traditional or trying something a bit
different? Consider rectangles (hung either portrait or landscape)
cogs, jersey shaped flags or something completely different!

44 Are you doubling the thickness of each flag? If you are, your bunting
will be stronger and longer lasting. You will also be able to play
with colour, different coloured front and back; this is where bunting
making gets exciting! The downside is that this is a much more
fiddly process and takes much longer, a big consideration if you TOP T IP!

it will need to be thick and strong. The best thing to use is woven

7 Can you recycle or reuse? Do you
have fabric leftover from projects,
or old clothing or bedding you no
longer need? Not only is this better
for the environment, you’ll have the
pleasure of recalling memories
associated with your recycled
items as your bunting dances in

CREAT
BUNT-OFF
Why not create your own bunting-making event inspired by our Great Barnsley Bunt-Off.
Gather people from your street, friendship group, family or community. Share ideas and
inspiration and before you know it you have bunting a-plenty ready for the big race.
DECORATE YOUR OWN
Let’s get personal! How about putting the name of your place, group or family on your
bunting flags. You could make poetry bunting! Use bondaweb and stitch to applique
your own words or sayings. You could even send some words of encouragement to our
awesome TDY Cyclists. Your decorations might be related to Barnsley places or sights of
interest on the Barnsley route.

Carefully cut out the black areas of your chosen design
from our templates. Use a craft knife with a fresh, sharp
cutting blade, and a green cutting mat. To cut, apply pressure with one finger
placed firmly on the indent on the craft knife handle. Always cut towards you and
away from your other hand. Keep the knife straight as much as possible. To turn corners
move the stencil and mat together rather than turning corners with the knife. Children
should be supervised if using this cutting method. You can use spray paint and your hand
cut stencil to decorate canvasses and boards for outside use. We recommend using non-
toxic spray paints which are now available but would still advise caution when spraying.
Be sure to wear a mask, work outside where possible. If you are spraying inside fully
ventilate your work area. Use short sprays and a light touch to ensure even coverage and
a crisp image.
7DESIGN YOUR OWN SHOP WINDOW
Use our stencil templates to decorate your home or workplace
window. We recommend using wipe-clean, chalk spray paint,
available online.
Local businesses ‘en route’ can come along to a window painting
demonstration planned for early April in a Town Centre venue. As well
a social gathering, guests will have a chance to meet artists who will
create live window art and share inspiration and instructions on how to
use stencils, sprays and chalk markers to create something unique and
bespoke for your business. We will be giving out a
number of ready-cut stencil packs, including more
complex 2 layer designs for you to play with.

combine templates and stencils. Once
you’ve made some pennants, you can
lay them out either in a circular pattern,
or side by side. 1 4
You can then put a cog stencil over the
top and either draw round the cog and
then colour it in or cut the cog up and 5 7
apply it as an extra layer to the pennant.

You’ll need to decide where you’re going to put up your decorations. Whether it’s
bunting, window dressing or even banners, then there are a few things you need
to think about.
You’ll need to have the permission of the owner of the property or land you’d like to
decorate before doing anything. You’ll also need to think about how to put it up safely.
Finally, you’ll need to consider if it has any impact on the public in any way or could
cause any potential issues. Even if you own the property or land, please do consider
all health and safety issues to yourself and others. It could be you or your friends
gardens, homes or businesses along the route, just please make sure pavements are
not obstructed.
You could also consider other locations to hang your bunting. This includes council
owned parks and verges along the route such as Wilthorpe, Mapplewell or Royston,
lampposts, fences and road signs, or Trans Pennine Trail crossing points such as
Lewden, Havelands Lane or Penistone Bridges. If you are interested in any of these
options, then you must submit for installation by Barnsley Council with your preferred
location. Please note that each Lamp column needs to be checked for structural
stability before any installation can proceed, and that council policy is that anything
fixed to lampposts can only go two weeks in advance of the event and will be taken
down within one week after the event.
It may be that several groups or people are interested in the same public location so
please share your plans and register interest with the Public Rights of Way team ideally
before Easter or the end of March but no later than Monday 8 April 2019. Contact them
on 01226 772696 or publicrightsofway@barnsley.gov.uk
18If you would like the council to put up your bunting you will need to complete the form
on the next pages so we know your preferred location, and who to return it to when it
is taken down. You will also need to make sure that each line of bunting has a name
written on it so we know who it belongs to. You could sew this on or write it with
fabric pens.
You can make as much bunting as you’d like to, but make sure that any single line of
bunting is no longer than 20m, all pennants must be attached together before being
deposited for installation, and there must be 70cm at either end of the line for attaching.
You can either leave it at the end of a Bunt Off session or drop it off at the following
places;
l Barnsley Council Highways Depot at Smithies Lane, Barnsley - security office
l Barnsley Council Westgate Plaza – Mark Swanwick
l North Area Council office - Darton centre
l Central Area Council office – Warren Quarry Lane
l South Area Council office, High Croft, Hoyland
l North East Area Council office: Bow Street, Cudworth
Please be aware if you are leaving your bunting for Barnsley Council to
install then we will do our best to ensure it gets back to you. However as it
will be hung in a public location we cannot guarantee that we will be able to
return it or the condition it will be in.
We reserve the right not to display any pennants or bunting that may be offensive
or inappropriate.
