This quiet village has seen its story change in the morning
of June, 6th 1944 when 82nd Airborne paratroopers liberated the
village.
The dummy paratrooper hanging on the steeple of the church,
representing John Steele, the Borne 0 of the Way of Liberty, Airborne
Museum, two modern stained-glass windows in Holly Mother of
Peace-church or Paratrooper’s Memorial at la Fière are tributes to
this event.
In 1962, movie “The longest Day“ released in theaters enhanced
Sainte-Mère-Église fame.

Carentan les Marais
At the gateway of
Cotentin, in Baie des Veys,
this town with its unusual
marina has kept a rich heritage
in testimony of the past
centuries. Self guided tour

In 1944, Carentan, strategic area
in Baie des Veys, had to be
quickly liberated by American

101st Airborne paratroopers in
order to join Utah and Omaha
beaches. After 6 days of fierce
sail fights, it was liberated on June,
12th by lieutenant colonel Cole.
A monument stands on his
shop honor there and an episode of
TV series Band of Brothers tells
