Interiors I t’s late afternoon at The Goring, the Belgravia bolthole that is seemingly immune to the rough and tumble of tumultuous world affairs, and a troop of distinguished officers (members of the Royal Household, perhaps?) are holding court in the lounge. It’s as genteel and quintessentially English as a picnic lifted from the pages of Enid Blyton. Footmen dressed in gold-embroidered scarlet coats zip between tables and skate across the marble lobby, and there is a sense amid the riotous chatter and convivial chinking of crystal that it’s showbusiness as usual. But the times they are a changin’. The real mastery is that the new look is barely out of nappies. When I arrive, the ‘soft opening’ dress rehearsal has finished and the curtain has been officially up for four hours. Yet the space – much lighter and brighter than before, even on a drizzly day – feels reassuringly familiar. The dark palette and heavier-set pieces have been banished, but the heritage, originality and sense of fun lingers. Masterminding the project was CEO Jeremy Goring (whose great-grandfather Otto opened the hotel) alongside legendary, larger-than-life managing director David-Morgan Hewitt and acclaimed interior designer Russell Sage. “It was about saying, ‘What is now right for us and our clients?’ It was about keeping a style that was chic, comfortable and English and related to the garden,” David tells me as Russell and I are served tea in his office. “It’s a celebration of the fact that this area overlooks the biggest private garden attached to any hotel in London.” The new 60-cover restaurant is an entirely new space, replacing the open-air veranda, which was at the mercy of the weather. There is also a lot to report on community and sustainability initiatives. Ebury Street is piloting the world’s first green lamp posts; technology that could be transformative for improving air quality and wellbeing in urban areas worldwide. And we are proud to provide the initial sponsorship of an initiative organised by the Belgravia Residents Association, supporting the wellbeing of local veterans through free horse-riding lessons. You can read more about these in the magazine and here in the bulletin. We were pleased to welcome over 200 people to our second public consultation on the redevelopment of Cundy Street and received a lot of useful feedback.
