SHIRE OF BEVERLEY FIRE SEASON INFORMATION Prepare for Fire Season The Shire of Beverley’s Community Emergency Services Manager (CESM) along with the Chief Bush Fire Control Officer wish to remind all property occupiers to ready and maintain their properties for the fire season. Fire breaks need to be installed before 01 November this year and maintained until 15 April next year. The minimum requirements for a firebreak in the Shire of Beverley is for the break to be at least 2.2 metres wide of bare mineral earth which means no vegetation (dead or alive) or flammable materials can be present. Alternatively small rural land holders can clear their properties of all inflammable materials or maintain grass mown to a height of less than 15cm. Larger rural properties should ensure that they have an operational independent mobile water filled firefighting unit with a water capacity of not less than 600L to be ready to be immediately deployed at all times throughout the Prohibited and Restricted burning periods. Fire breaks play a part in reducing the spread of fire but just as importantly they provide a safer space for fire fighters to work from when trying to combat a fire. Although not mandated in the Fire Break Order volunteer firefighters are urging property owners to also consider the access to their properties by large fire appliances. Generally this means making sure that there is an adequate gate width of at least 3 metres and to ensure that there are no overhanging branches or obstructions below 4 metres high over entry points and fire breaks to allow fire appliances to safely navigate your property should they need to defend it from fire. Prohibited Burning within the Beverley Shire is scheduled to begin on 01 November after which time no fires are permitted to be lit until the 15 February unless otherwise notified when a Permit to Burn (PTB) can be applied for online by visiting the Shire of Beverley website at www.beverley.wa.gov.au PROHIBITED BURNING TIMES Section 17 (7) Bush Fires Act 1954. Notice is hereby given that the PROHIBITED BURNING period for the Shire of Beverley commences at Midnight on Thursday 31 October 2019 until Midnight on Friday 14 February 2020 unless otherwise notified. No open-air fires are permitted during this period. Gas barbeques are exempt. SHIRE OF BEVERLEY Local Council Election Information Form 19 Local Government Act 1995 Local Government (Elections) Regulations 1997 [s.4.77] RESULTS OF ELECTION FOR SHIRE of BEVERLEY These are the results of the local government election held on 19 October 2019. District Candidate Number of Votes Beverley Chris LAWLOR 184 Beverley Darryl BROWN 165 Beverley Peter J GOGOL 149 Beverley Matt NORMAN 138 Beverley Thomas BUCKLAND 84 Beverley Terry MCLAUGHLIN 147 Therefore the following people are elected as councillors for the District of Beverley. Each councillor will hold office until the date set out next to his name. Name Expiry of term Chris LAWLOR 2023 Darryl BROWN 2023 Peter J GOGOL 2023 Terry McLAUGHLIN 2023 It has come to our attention that some residents were unaware of their ability to vote in the recent Local Government Election. As the Shire of Beverley no longer has wards (removed in 2013), all registered residents and ratepayers are entitled to vote every two years in the Local Government Election. If you are on the State Electoral Roll at a different address but are a ratepayer in Beverley, again you are entitled to vote provided you have completed an Owners and Occupier Form prior to the end of August in the election year. When the Owners and Occupiers form is completed you will stay on the roll until you no longer own property in Beverley (ie you are only required to complete the form once). The next Local Government Election will be Saturday 16 October 2021. 19 October 2019 Returning Officer Stephen Paul Gollan 4 Beverley Blarney, Edition 421 - November 2019 www.beverley.wa.gov.au
BEVERLEY MEN’S SHED Beverley Men’s Shed was recently awarded a $5,500 contract to construct playground equipment and furniture for the Dowerin Field Day Committee. Our Men’s Shed was the only Men’s Shed or Community Group in the region, for one reason or another, willing to undertake the making of the 24 mainly wooden items, completed at short notice over a two week period. The quality of the work was of such a high standard that some items were taken to this years’ Royal Show. All the material, amounting to approximately half the value of the contract, was purchased at a competitive price from Avon Trading Company in line with the Shed policy to support local business. This latest project was one of a number carried out by members of our Men’s Shed for a range of organisations over the last 10 years. These include our local Shire Council (with whom we have enjoyed a very close association), the Shire of Brookton, Wheatbelt Natural Resource Management, the Alex Miles Lodge, the Beverley District Hospital, as well as a number of smaller projects. Our next venture is the partial restoration of an old Morris Truck, formerly owned by the Shire, now located at Avondale. When completed, the truck will be located in the area now occupied by the Centenary of Federation Square, where the proposed Skate Park development will be. Thank You The members of the Beverley Men’s Shed Incorporated sincerely thank Marcus, of Avon Trading Company, for his very generous donation to the machinery section of the Shed. It is greatly appreciated. From all the Members. THANK YOU I thank all members of the community who have supported my nomination to membership of the Beverley Shire Council. I will endeavor in the next four years to serve the Community and meet your expectations. It will be my aim, along with fellow Councillors, to continue the good work that has gone before to build a connected and resilient community. As we do not have a Wards system, I will welcome invitations from all areas and organisations to increase my familiarity with the whole Shire so I can represent you in an informed and effective way. Please feel welcome to raise and discuss any matter of concern and suggestions for development and positively moving forward. THE BLUE LINE Beverley Police Station 57 Hunt Road Beverley WA 6304 BeverleyPol@twitter.com Email: Beverley.Police.Station@police.wa.gov.au Over the last few weeks we have had some incidents on Vincent Street where people have been assaulted. One person has been arrested and charged for the incident a few weeks ago and only last week we arrested the same male person for assaulting his partner. Another person has been arrested for brandishing a knife in the main street. We will not accept unsocial and violent behaviour in this town and especially on the main street, where people are going about their daily business. The community has been fantastic with advising us of these incidents and also assisting us with our inquiries so we can make arrests. As I said recently to someone and mentioned before in the Blarney: “If you are doing nothing wrong, then you have nothing to worry about”. But there are a few who continually want to break the law in regards to anti-social behaviour and dealing in drugs. We know exactly who they are and I make no apologies for targeting these people. MOVEMENT OF AGRICULTURAL VEHICLES/IMPLEMENTS As the summer months are approaching that means there is an increase on the roads of agricultural vehicles and implements. There was recently an agricultural pilot’s course or courses run at the Beverley CRC which outlined the requirements. For those of you that may have missed it the Agricultural Pilot requirements flow chart are on the previous page. For more information on when a pilot vehicle is needed or how to obtain a pilot’s licence then contact Heavy Vehicle Help Desk on 138 486 or visit the Agricultural Vehicles page at www.mainroads.wa.gov.au If you aren’t sure which roads are in which zones (and whether or not you need a pilot) go to https://mrwebapps.mainroads.wa.gov.au/hvsnetworkmap and click on “WA Agricultural Pilots Zones”, then “All Zones” and zoom in to your area. EYES ON THE STREET APP Crime Stoppers WA have developed an app “Eyes on the street” which allows those technology savvy to report any criminal behaviour from your smart phone. The app allows to make reports as you see them. You can even remain anonymous if you wish. If smart phones are not your thing then use the toll-free telephone hotline (1800 333 000). **************************** BEVERLEY POLICE - HOW TO CONTACT US If it’s life threatening or an emergency dial 000 For all other matters phone 131 444 or 9646 3333 (leave a message if your call is diverted) If it’s not urgent send us an email Beverley.Police.Station@police.wa.gov.au on twitter @BeverleyPol or drop into the station for a chat. AGRICULTURAL MUSEUM Waterhatch Road, Beverley The Beverley Agriculture Museum located at Avondale Farm was open for the viewing public over the second weekend in October to coincide with the Beverley Heroic Cycling Event. Two of our volunteers John Alexander and John Islip were in attendance on the two days respectively, and were able to acquaint several visitors with the vast machinery collection. As usual on the third Saturday of the month our group of machinery enthusiasts got together, this time to bale and cart a crop of Oaten/Pasture Hay, the proceeds of which are to be used for maintenance and restoration of the Ag Museum collection. Many thanks to Duayne for his efforts in sowing, looking after and baling this years crop. He and John Hawke gave their time and also use of their own equipment during the baling and carting, which was undertaken with the support of Eric and John A. The small bales of oaten pasture hay are now available for $7.00 a bale, enquiries to John Alexander 9646 0768. After all this activity it was time for morning tea where Kerry and Kevin joined the group before everyone set off to reposition equipment following the volunteers hasty exit at the conclusion of the recent National Trust Community Open Day where several museum items were fired up for the public to view next to similar modern machinery provided by local businesses. There was also the regular tyre pumping and general activity surrounding our get together. The Museum was also open on the third weekend in October, this being the final opening for 2019. The warmer weather saw only a few visitors over the two days and many thanks once again to John A and John I for attending the museum. If you would like to find out more about becoming an Ag Museum volunteer please contact John Alexander on 9646 0768 or Dee Ridgway on 0428 464 007. If you are interested in the oaten-pasture hay at $7 per bale, contact John Alexander. 10 Beverley Blarney, Edition 421 - November 2019 www.beverley.wa.gov.au

Beverley Community Garden Update There is a new community garden starting in your neighbourhood, the Beverley Community Garden! Our Mission is that the garden will be a welcoming outdoor community place where the focus is on people, sustainable organic gardening, learning, teaching and healthy food choices. Our group of enthusiastic volunteers have already identified land at the local school as a site for the community garden. They have commenced project plans, terms of reference, site assessments and protocols for a basis of the group. As you could imagine starting such a large project from scratch is going to take a lot of community input and help. There is a community garden survey on page 33 of this Blarney edition, or for an electronic version go to the homepage of the Beverley CRC website, www.beverleycrc.net OR scan the QR Code at the bot- tom of this page. Our group would appreciate you completing this as we value your input to assist us in making sure we get it right the first time and ensuring the garden is sustainable for years to come. Donations- we are gratefully accepting them! We have list of items that will help us so check out the list on page 32 to see if you have anything spare or no longer in use, feel free to contact one of our group members. You may have noticed donations tins around town- we appreciate all donations no matter how big or small. You can also support this community project by coming and buying some cakes or plants from our stall on Saturday 02 November, at the kiosk next to IGA. We are holding a Community Swap Meet on Saturday 09 November at the Ram Shed at the town oval, with a sausage sizzle and refreshments for sale. The Men Shed members are bringing a truck load of items to sell. If you want to sell household items, plants, or any other goods, sellers are welcome for a $5 fee. Full event details are on page 5. Our group would like to thank the following for their kindness. Beverley Men's Shed - making the garden beds with donated goods from John Roki. Warrior Wellbeing Article Our Wellbeing During Adolescent Transition Transition periods are a normal part of life, they are ongoing through our many different ages and stages and are often associated with varying aspects of change or moving out of our comfort zone. Most young people, regardless of attending agricultural college or mainstream high school, growing up on a farm or in the city (both male & female) will have experienced some form of change in recent years. Whether developmentally (puberty), moving away from home, creating new friendships or the expectations placed on you around attitude, behaviour and study requirements, change is inevitable. At this time of the year many young people (and their parents) are taking important steps to prepare for the final stages of their high school journey and transition into the beginning of their working lives. If you are one of these young people and reading this article it shows at least two things: 1. You have already survived and thrived through one very significant time of change and transition; 2. You are tak- ing positive steps and preparing yourself for the next exciting transition of becoming a young adult and entering the world of employment or further study. Periods of transition come with a new set of challenges that may put us under pressure. Moving out of our comfort zone means exposing ourselves to new and unfamiliar situations and can often lead to: uncertainty and discomfort; having to create new routines and habits (sleep can be affected); feelings of fear, worry or anxiousness (this is normal, but if it’s ongoing and intense seek help); Increase in stress levels (some stress helps us operate during difficult times, but we need manage and keep an eye on our stress levels). This all sounds a bit negative I know but the good news is that if we talk about these things, normalise our reactions and push through these times the boundaries of our comfort zone will grow and expand. We can gain satisfaction and meaning from getting through such times. There will always be some hold-ups, knock-backs, days when we question our decisions and things just won’t go our way. Transition is a process, so you need to allow some time to settle in and adjust before you can survive and thrive. Here are a few tips to help with the next stages of your life journey: Accept change as a part of life “stop wishing for what was and enjoy what is”; Talk to your parents, peers and mentors about how you’re feeling; Make time for your passions & interests; Exercise and take time to relax. No one can work or study 24/7, time out is an important part of your wellbeing and stress management; Stay socially connected and take time to laugh with others (not just on social media, get out and create opportunities to form new friendships and surround yourself with real people); Avoid drugs and alcohol use. If you do choose to drink (when you’re 18) moderation and knowing your limits are vital; Use help or support services, they are there for a reason. All the best for your next stage of life and remember …before it all gets too much… Talk to a Mate!! Terry and the Team The Regional Men’s Health Initiative delivered by Wheatbelt Men’s Health (Inc.) Beverley LADIES GOLF Welcome to our final edition of golf notes for 2019. On Wednesday 09 October we had our closing day where we invite past players, trophy donors and anyone who has helped us in the kitchen. This is the day that we present trophies to the winners of each golfing week. On this day, we have a long drive playoff. Each month, we have a long drive on a different hole, alternating from the first nine in one month and then the next month we play the long drive on the other nine. Lyn Mactaggart, Jane Murray, Maxine Watts, and Yvonne Hobbs all participated in the playoff. All of the ladies teed off Number 18 and Yvonne Hobbs had the longest drive. Congratulations Yvonne! This year for the first time that we can recall, we had to have a putt off as two players tied with the same amount of putts. Even on a countback, I could not separate the two. Glenys Collins and Maxine Watts had to putt from 5 different locations on the 18 th green. We had to count how many putts they had for each hole and Glenys Collins won on the last putt. Congratulations Glenys! Next year, 2020, we will be playing golf on Tuesdays as we have a few younger players who would like to join us. We are very excited about this! Beverley GOLF CLUB The Beverley Gas and Plumbing Grand Final 3-Ball Ambrose event was held on Saturday, 28 September. Winners of the event were the team of Alan Hammond, Kevin Elliott and Mark Kont with a score of Nett 62.5. Huge thanks are extended to Gerry and Valery Seeber for their support of this day. The final fixtured event for the year was the Flag Tournament held on 05 October. Alan Hammond won the day by completing the course with two strokes in hand. Mike Carthew ran second by holing out on the 18th with his last stroke. The trial format was a hit with players and will be held again some time next year. Although, officially, the season has ended there will be members continuing to play in Scroungers events on Wednesday afternoons throughout summer. Saturday afternoon golf will also continue for as long as there are players who want to have a social game. Anyone interested in continuing to play (members or otherwise) are invited to call Mark Kont on 0490 037 810. Anyone is welcome to join us at 4PM tee-off. Results for October were: September 25 - 10 players – won by Alan Scales – 15 points October 02 - 11 players – won by Chris Lawlor – 14 points October 09 - 8 players – won by Paul Burns and Mike Carthew – 14 points each October 16 - 15 players – won by Wayne Smith and Steve Johnston – 14 points each (Also, a big thank you to Terry Woods from the scroungers for making too many sausages and having to offload them on us in cooked form on October 16). Annual General Meeting The Club's Annual General Meeting will be held at the Clubhouse at 7.00PM on Tuesday 04 February 2020. All members and prospective members are urged to attend. Thank You Throughout the year there have been many people who have assisted the club through direct sponsorship, or with goods or machinery in kind, or by simply helping with their labour at crucial times. While we have tried to publicly acknowledge every one of these people during the year, there have probably been some omissions which are greatly regretted. The President, committee and members of the Beverley Golf Club would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who helped throughout 2019. Without your support we would find it very difficult to operate. Membership Enquiries New and prospective members or visitors are always welcome to join us for a round. Although the season is officially over we would still welcome enquiries from any interested players. Further information can be obtained by calling Men's Captain Mark Kont on 0490 037 810. We now look forward to the 2020 season. Good golfing to all. www.beverley.wa.gov.au Beverley Blarney, Edition 421 - November 2019 55
