O
ne thing you learn through years and decades of supporting
Bohemians is never, ever count your chickens, no matter how
tempting and straightforward the hatching procedure may seem.
Those words of caution are certainly my mindset as I head in to see
us take on F91 Dudelange tonight in the Aviva. We stand on the brink of
qualification for the third round of European competition, a venture we
have never managed before. The newly-fangled Europa Conference League
it may be but it still carries an awful lot of weight in terms of pride, not
forgetting the bank balance. Premier Division
1-0 is all we lead and in the second half in the baking sun of Luxembourg 1923/24, 1927/28,
last week, F91 showed glimpses of what they’re capable of so while there 1929/30, 1933/34,
may be a carnival atmosphere once more in the ground tonight, I’m one 1935/36, 1974/75,
who is most certainly wary of the ECL equivalent of the Ides of March. 1977/78, 2000/01,
We’ve been in similar situations before, all but sure we’d progress, only for 2002/03, 2008, 2009
disaster to happen. So while tonight is to be enjoyed, there still has to be
a lot of work done. All we can do is get behind the boys from the off and FAI Cup
turn the Aviva into a cauldron of noise and song, as we did a fortnight ago, 1927/28, 1934/35,
and urge Bohs to unhinge the visitors. 1969/70, 1975/76,
While we’re here, what a night the Stjarnan match was. At 1-0 it was 1991/1992, 2000/01,
far from ensured but the second half was one of pure joy as we just took 2008
control and with intent. 6,000 there may have been, spaced out but the
noise from those in attendance was beyond what we’d imagined it would League Cup
be. It was a joy to sing along to the favourites once more and a thrill to 1974/75, 1978/79, 2009
bump into familiar friends, many of whom we hadn’t seen since March of
last year. With an extra 2,000 people in the crowd tonight, it promises to be Setanta Cup
just as good. 2010
Finally, on behalf of myself, the programme team and indeed the club, we
would like to express our sincere condolences to Aidan Fitzmaurice on the Leinster Cup
sad passing of his father. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. 1895/95 - 2016:

                                                                                     LoI Shield

with Keith Long

                  G
                            ood evening and welcome to
from the dugout
                            the Dublin Arena for tonight’s
                            Second Round, Second Leg Europa
                  Conference qualifier versus F91 Dudelange.
I would like welcome the delegation from
Dudelange, the backroom staff and players for
                  tonight’s game.
The game is finely poised as we take a
slim lead into this tie after a disciplined away
performance from the boys. We started the
game brightly in Luxembourg and went ahead
through a Ross Tierney goal after a brilliantly
executed pass from Dawson Devoy to pick
out a clever run from wide by Ali Coote.
Ross was on hand to fire home after the ball
spilled loose from their goalkeeper. Not for
the first time this year, Ross was alert to give
us the lead. He is thriving on the responsibility
of contributing goals and assist but also
benefitting from the foil that is Georgie Kelly
whom again I felt provided us with a platform
up front. It was disciplined team display but
we feel we can play better than we did on the
night. That’s not to take anything away from
the players; as results in Europe are hard to
come by especially away from home so we
can be nothing but pleased with the result. I
feel however that we will need to raise the
bar again with performance to progress as
                  Dudelange will absolutely embrace coming
to Dublin and will feel they have more than
a fighting chance. They are a good team with
some good technical players and plenty or
European experience so we will be taking
nothing for granted and understand the size of
                  the task we face tonight.
It’s once again absolutely fantastic to see we
have sold out the 8,000 capacity in the Dublin
Arena and we are looking forward to the
                                                                        ‘You the supporters deserve
colour and atmosphere which was generated nights like this and we as a group
two weeks again. You the supporters deserve want to play in important games.

                           welcome to everyone here at
the Dublin Arena for this Europa
                Conference League second qualifying round,
                second leg game.
It really is great to be able to accommodate
so many supporters, members, season ticket
holders and friends old and new to this
magnificent sporting arena, again a huge thank
you to everyone who has made this possible.
The 8,000 tickets sold out in jig time, makes
you wonder how many would we sell, if there
were no crowd number restrictions. We are
honoured to welcome again tonight, as for the
Stjarnan game, some of our most distinguished
former players, managers and indeed past
president; Billy Young, Turlough O’Connor, and
Tony O’Connell. Over the years, all have made
huge contributions to our club, and long may
we have them at our games.
For those of you who were unable to get

in the area.
Thurles Town AFC was founded in 1950 and played
in the North Tipperary District League. Soon referred
to under the moniker ‘The Town’, they decided
to merge with Kilkenny side Peake Villa with the
intention of joining the League of Ireland and bring
senior football and maybe a bit of football success to
the sports mad town. The latter point though was a
gamble as even in their junior years with the North
Tipperary District league, silverware was sparce. So
to anyone watching this new team tog out in yellow in
the KFC league, Thurles Town FC wouldn’t cause many
men to part with their cash in the bookies.
With their proposal accepted, they were welcomed

                                                            and want to
into the league fold under Thurles Town FC for the
1977/78 season. That debut season ended with only
a solitary win to their name - guess who that was
against - and they finished in last place, losing 21
matches. The following season saw an improvement
in their form as they finished 12th, winning eight

and St. Patrick’s Athletic. This was largely down to
the goalscoring efforts of top goal scorer Neville
Steadman who bagged a total of 17 goals for the club.
Steadman had the honour of nutmegging Peter Shilton
in a friendly against Stoke City.
However that was as good as it got and a series
of bottom of the table finishes and FAI Cup first
round exits were the norm. Their stay was short
lived and they only played five seasons. However, in a
foreshadow of something that often comes back to
haunt Bohemians to this day, the ‘minnows’ of Thurles
Town gained some jinx value over us. In Thurles’ first
season, Bohs picked up a solitary point from both Contact Alan at

our lot and in general the Tipperary men managed bohsprog@gmailcom

leaving the league, they rejoined the North Tipperary
District League, while Peak Villa continued playing in

there wasn’t enough local talent in the team to
convince the public to support them.

ast Thursday week, I got a call from my
brother around lunchtime. He had been
out walking his dog in Temple Bar and
was mildly astonished to see that many of
the bars and restaurants were thronged with
people sporting red & black shirts.
“Never seen so many in one place outside
Dalymount” he noted, a trace of incredulity in
                     his voice.
I thought he might be exaggerating, but
later that evening on the way to Lansdowne,
it was obvious he wasn’t. All the hostelries
along the way from the Schoolhouse Hotel on reduced capacity not to mention the entire
Northumberland Rd, past Beggars Bush, to the global pandemic thing. They were able to enjoy

leg there was not shown on
TV in Ireland so the late Donal
Crowther had the idea to ask the
                        hotel receptionist to record the
game from local TV onto VHS, with
the tape to be carried like precious
cargo and shown in the Dalymount
bar a few days later. A 4-0 loss meant there
was little appetite to see the game so the tape
was left on some dusty shelf, but at the time
it was the only way to see the game for those
                        who could not travel.
The two stories show just how prevalent
the mobile phone has become in our lives. If
you’d suggested in 1992 that you could hold
up a device the size of a chocolate bar, and it
could broadcast a game in Bucharest live to And there’s one person today who surely
anyone, anywhere in the world who wanted to wishes he had left the phone off while
see, it would have seemed far fetched. watching the Euros. Bernard O’Byrne is no
I also feel a lot of the time that the smart- longer in charge of Irish basketball, a proud 10-
phone is a curse as well as a blessing. I spent year career ended in one silly, three-word post
much of Euro 2020 in a holiday home in a on Facebook. If Bernard had just put his phone
remote part of Donegal, in a house with no in the drawer, or even just turned off his wifi,
wifi and a very weak phone signal. There was while watching England v Denmark, he would
no point in watching the football the way most probably be still in a job today.
people do these days - phone or tablet in hand How many people missed good passages
to argue on twitter with people you’ve never of play, or important decisions being made on
met and don’t like - because there was no the bench, because they’d given more time to
internet access on the phone. twitter than the football?
So I watched those Euros matches the same Without John O’Connor’s smart-phone
way I’d have watched Euro ‘92, just watching and an app called twitter, Bohs fans would not
the match, listening to the commentary and have been able to see as much as they did
