                               SPOTLIGHT: Mount St. Helens
Brentwood Park - Library News
For a few thousand years, Mount Saint Helens in Washington State was quiet (also known
as dormant) at times and sometimes active. This year marks the 40th anniversary of its
major eruption.

Have you ever seen someone take an unopened can of soda and shake it? Inside the soda
are gases, and pressure builds up when it's shaken. When you open the soda can, the
soda comes shooting out, and there's a big mess (don't do this without your parents'
permission!). (Study.com)

This is like what happened on May 18th, 1980. After a large earthquake hit the area, the
north side of the mountain collapsed and caused a major landslide. It was the largest
landslide in history. A few seconds later, the volcano erupted and sent ash into the air for
almost ten hours.
