Only 2.5% of total transport emissions come from rail 11% of total miles travelled in the UK are made by rail

              DESTINATION: a carbon free railway

Rail only accounts for 0.6% of the UK total emissions
UK’s target of ‘net zero’ greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Rail is a low-carbon form of transport
The railway is already helping to reduce emissions and fight climate change

Rail is already a low-carbon form of transport – it only accounts for 2.5% of total transport
emissions and about 0.6% of the UK total.
Carbon emissions per passenger km have been cut by nearly 30% since 2005 – with rail’s
strong environmental performance helping to reduce UK carbon emissions by up to 7.7 million tonnes
every year.
Every freight train means up to 76 fewer HGVs on the road – with one tonne of freight travelling
by rail emitting 76% less CO2 than if it travelled by road.
8,000 new greener carriages are being introduced – equivalent to replacing half the existing fleet
old for new.
Rail is inherently energy efficient – once a train has accelerated, it needs relatively little additional
energy to maintain its speed and technology now allows energy to be captured when electric trains
brake.

RAIL IS ONE OF THE CLEANEST FORMS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE

The public private partnership that runs the railway has a major role to play in meeting the key challenges facing the UK in the
years ahead. One of the most crucial of these is tackling climate change and helping the UK meet its legally binding target of ‘net
zero’ greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The industry is working to reduce emissions further, but we need to go further and faster. That is why over the coming years the
industry wants to see more of the network electrified and new battery and hydrogen technology exploited in order to take diesel-
only trains off the network. This will help the UK meet its emissions targets and ensure a cleaner, greener world for generations.
BUSINESS RUNS ON RAIL - Business Travel Association
SETTING A FRAMEWORK FOR CHANGE

The route to achieving a carbon-free railway is a real challenge,
especially on a network that was designed in the Victorian age. To make
it happen, the railway needs certainty and the right frameworks so that
it can plan and take the necessary long-term decisions now.

To do this, the industry is recommending the following:

A commitment by Government to a rolling programme of electrification
 – this would help build-up skills and capability within the industry,
reducing the costs of future electrification schemes so they are more in
line with comparable projects in Europe.

A new independent organising body to join-up the industry – the
Williams Review should recommend the creation of such a body to co-
ordinate work on de-carbonisation across the industry and ensure that
operators have the right incentives to deliver this change.

Targets that reflect the challenges the industry face – we are calling on
the Government to develop realistic carbon reduction targets that
enable the industry to deliver the step-change to deliver the net zero
 carbon target by 2050.

OVERVIEW OF THE GB RAIL INDUSTRY

National Rail journeys have more than doubled since privatisation. 1.72 billion rail journeys per
year or 4.7m journeys per day.
Highest infrastructure investment in Europe – £11.6 billion on 5,700 new train carriages by 2021.

Feel secure when travelling by train, with more than 33,000 cameras covering stations and trains
around the country.
Rail is becoming an even greener way to travel, CO2 emissions per passenger operator have
decreased to 36.6g per passenger km (10.3% lower than in 2017-2018).
Improving customer satisfaction score (83% overall journey) and punctuality rate (77% passenger
satisfaction with punctuality).
97p in every £1 spent goes back into running and improving the railway. Smaller profit than in
most sectors in the UK.

FRANCHISES
BUSINESS RUNS ON RAIL - Business Travel Association
THE FRANCHISE MODEL

EACH FRANCHISE AGREEMENT COVERS A GEOGRAPHICAL ROUTE FOR A SET NUMBER OF YEARS
AND SPECIFIES THE SERVICE PATTERNS AND STANDARDS THE FRANCHISING AUTHORITY WANTS
TO DELIVER. A NUMBER OF OPERATORS ARE OPEN ACCESS AND 2 ROUTES ARE RUN BY DfT

MAIN INCOME STREAMS
• Franchisees charge fares to passengers, some regulated by government
• Subsidy provided to support socially necessary services
• Rental income from sub-letting commercial space in stations

PRINCIPAL COSTS
• Operators pay the government a premium on profitable routes
• Operators pay Network Rail for track access, and lease of stations
• Operators lease rolling stock and either perform maintenance in-house or through private contractors
• Staff costs – including drivers, guards, station staff, on-train staff, maintenance and back-office

TRAIN OPERATING COMPANY OVERVIEW
SUSTAINABILITY
Last year Chiltern Railways completed an LED light replacement programme, replacing over 5,500 bulbs
which will reduce CO2e output by over 600,000kg. Chiltern Railways also introduced the UK rail industry's
first-ever coffee cup collection and recycling service at Marylebone. To date, over 110,000 cups have now
been recycled.

This year Chiltern Railways are very excited to be working with partners on trials for battery hybrid trains
which will reduce emissions further.

FLEET
Chiltern Railways operates with a mixed fleet of Diesel Multiple Units (Class 165, 168 and 172)
supplemented by a small number of loco-hauled Mark 3 carriages.

INNOVATION
In October 2019, Chiltern Railways partnered with BNP Paribas, JCDecaux, and Airlabs to make Marylebone
Station home to four permanent, large clean air zones. Four traditional Out of Home (OOH) advertising
hoardings were adapted to emit clean air in areas where people wait for trains, significantly improving air
quality and creating a healthier environment.

ADDED VALUE
Free Wi-Fi is available on all trains and stations. Chiltern Railways is one of the most punctual and highest
performing railways in the country, and consistently scores highly in customer satisfaction surveys. A
selected number of our trains have Business Zone which is available with a peak or off-peak supplement.
Business Zone offers a quieter environment with wider seats and large tables for working, plus free
unlimited Wi-Fi.

improve air quality for the customers.

FLEET
Over the next 12 months CrossCountry will introduce increased Turbostar fleet capacity on their regional routes by May 2021 and increasing HST services
throughout the week during next year.

INNOVATION
CrossCountry has recently undertaken a project to improve the way the business uses its Driver Advisory System to aid in Eco driving. One of the Turbostars
trains has been fitted with fuel metering equipment to measure journey by journey fuel consumption. This insight is now being used to review what other
initiatives could be utilised to deliver further benefits and potential efficiencies. During the past 12 months we have also rolled out a software change on our
Voyager fleet that has delivered some positive environmental benefits.

ADDED VALUE
Catering – all long distance services between 0600 and 2000 have an at-seat catering offer provided, with a limited service provision to the handful of services

TRAIN OPERATING COMPANY OVERVIEW
SUSTAINABILITY
As an electric traction fleet, the trains which are powered without burning fossil fuels are already amongst the lowest carbon modes of transport to travel
throughout the region and have been for over 100 years. Since 2013, Merseyrail have reduced their stations overall electricity use by 19% through a combination
of employee engagement programmes as well as technology enhancements. LED lighting and smart controls are being rolled out to stations where a 30% reduction
in electricity consumption has been achieved at these locations.
FLEET
With a wide range of new customer-focused features and functions new, state-of-the-art trains will transform travel. The
trains are being built and maintained by Swiss-based manufacturer, Stadler, and will replace the near 40-year-old fleet that
currently runs on the network. The new trains will be safer – most notably in the ease in which everyone can get on and off,
with step-free access thanks to a sliding step. It will make Merseyrail the most accessible, traditional network in the country.
The trains will be able to carry 50% more passengers while retaining the same number of seats. This will help them better
cater for rising passenger numbers, both now and in the future. The new trains will have more space for bikes, buggies,
disabled passengers and luggage; intelligent air conditioning; a bright, open and airy saloon, and a mix of seating types,
keeping some of the ‘sociable’ facing seats.

INNOVATION
Ainsdale station is the most eco and environmental station on the network. The station was designed with sustainability at
its heart with a multitude of green features including rainwater harvesting system to feed the toilets, thermal insulation
levels exceeding standards, canopy overhangs over the highly glazed areas to reduce overheating and the need for artificial
cooling, concourse areas are highly glazed to decrease the dependence on artificial lighting, all lighting is LED low energy,
30m2 of solar panels - which will provide energy for the majority of the station reducing significantly the use of a mains
supply. In addition, Merseyrail have provided a dedicated local base for the Merseyside Police to occupy providing a valuable
customer service.

STANDARD CLASS vs FIRST CLASS
There is no First Class on Merseyrail but Corporate Season Tickets are available for regular travel.
TRAIN OPERATING COMPANY OVERVIEW
SUSTAINABILITY
Scotland’s vision is to have carbon neutral railway by 2035. This will be achieved by a Rolling Programme for Electrification and the introduction of technological
advancements that allows trains to be in service or adapted to run on alternative fuels and batteries. The network will be boosted with direct-wire connected
renewable energy generation. Stations and depots are working towards net zero carbon, utilising the latest technologies and innovations to reduce grid energy
demand.

FLEET
Class385 trains are delivering a 60% reduction in carbon emissions Edinburgh to Glasgow route. These trains are faster, longer, quieter and more environmentally
friendly than the diesel trains that they have typically replaced. The installation of the Driver Advisory System (DAS) to High Speed (HST) Intercity trains will be
extended in 2020 to seek to reduce diesel usage by up to 5%. DAS uses Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) to compare the train’s current position along with the
next required stopping point. DAS will then calculate the most efficient way of getting from A to B and advise the driver of this.

INNOVATION
Innospec developed a fuel additive designed to return the engine to a ‘like new’ condition which results in lower emissions, improved engine performance and fuel
economy. The MTU183TD engine from a class 170 and a Cummins NT855 engine from class 158 were sent to Millbrook Leyland’s test facility. The engines were
mounted to a dynamometer and tested with and without EcoClean alongside clean and dirty injectors. Cycle F of ISO 8178 (International standard for exhaust
emissions measurement for non-road engine applications) was used as this was a close fit to the real-world operation of the engines. A weighted average was
calculated based on volume used per engine type. The resultant fuel saving was 3.06% which leads to annual reductions of CO2e by 4,578 tonnes, methane
reduction of 4.8 tonnes and nitrous oxides by 51 tons. The additive will be introduced to the diesel fleets in 2020.

ADDED VALUE
A Flexipass lets you make 10 journeys on the same route within one month. Travel
anytime and save money compared to buying single or return tickets.

STANDARD CLASS vs FIRST CLASS

WMT is verified against ISO14064-1 Greenhouse Gases standard and is reporting emissions fully, this also allows visibility of areas of high emissions that can
be targeted for reductions such as heating systems and traction diesel. Both of these are already being targeted with introduction of AdBlue and Automatic
Heating Systems across the WMT property network. The DMU operate to the latest emissions standards and include the use of Ad-Blu to support this.
FLEET
Introduction of Class 196 trains due for 2020. Introduction of Integrated-Driver Advisory Systems across the fleet to assist in green driving and make reductions
to fuel consumption. Introduction of AdBlue to the diesel fleet to help reduce emissions of NOx gases and improve air quality across the network. Introducing
of a new fleet of electric trains onto the Cross City route will increase capacity to travel into Birmingham. As an Emu their Co2 will be better than travel by car
and will continue to drop over the coming years in line with the UK power generation mix. DMUs on the Shrewsbury/Hereford/Worcester services introduced.

INNOVATION
Both of the new EMU and the new DMU fleets include intelligent air conditioning that reduces the power
needed by monitoring the air quality and adjusting as required. Also both fleets include toilets that retain
the effluent (not releasing it onto the track). On the EMU the toilet system has an intelligent water recycling
process whereby hand-wash water is filtered and then used in the toilet flush, which reduces the overall
quality of water used.

FLEET
In 2018/19 Southern were running 214 Class 377, 19 Class 313 and 46 Class 455 units. This was a total electric multiple unit strength of 279 with an additional 12 diesel 2-car 171 and 8 diesel
4-car 171 units. The total Southern fleet being 299.

INNOVATION
When comparing Class 700 to Class 313, the introduction of newer rolling stock has shown a 33% increase in traction efficiency and an energy
reduction of 18%. When considering our overall traction electricity consumption, the amount of energy returned to the network through
regenerative braking has increased by 30%. On stations GTR are trialling roof-integrated photovoltaic solar power as part of a joint partnership
with Network Rail. This proof of concept will influence the opportunity of extending solar across stations during additional station improvement
projects. On engineering depots GTR are building a partnership with Energy Garden to deliver renewable energy infrastructure to support local
communities. This will see a trial on at least 2 engineering depots to install roof mounted solar photovoltaics with the income generated
supporting the ongoing development and management of community gardens on rail stations. GTR are also introducing 2 industry first Electric
Vehicle Charging Hubs that will provide 12 charge points at Haywards Heath with infrastructure installed to expand a further 15 points, and 27
charge points at Hatfield.
