Comedy great Harold Lloyd heads to college in his biggest box office hit Silent Sundays continue with The Freshman on March 22nd Bring the family to the Playhouse March 22nd at 2:30pm for a Sunday afternoon at the movies featuring the 1925 collegiate comedy, The Freshman, starring silent comedy great Harold Lloyd! Lloyd plays Harold Lamb, a kind-hearted, optimistic, and “bespectacled go-getter who heads off to college thinking his experiences will be just like the ones he saw in the movies” (tcm.com). He soon realizes though that college is not what it seems. In the hopes of becoming popular on campus, he tries joining the football team. “This crowd pleaser is a gleeful showcase for Lloyd’s slapstick brilliance and incandescent charm.” (criterion.com). The Freshman was Lloyd’s biggest box office hit. Called the ‘grand-daddy’ of college comedies, the film influenced college themed films thereafter. In 1990, The Freshman was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry, deemed as "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant." Accompanying the film on the Playhouse’s 1924 Mighty Wurlitzer theater pipe organ is American Theatre Organ Society’s Organist of the Year (2012) Mark Herman. The series concludes with Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush (1925) which “charts a prospector’s search for fortune in the Klondike and his discovery of romance” on May 31st. It was the film that Chaplin stated he would most like to be remembered by and remains “one of cinema’s enduring classics, starring, written, and directed by the twentieth century’s first media superstar” (tcm.com). Purchase your tickets for $10 at the Playhouse Box Office Tuesdays/Thursdays from 2:00pm-6:00pm or day of show for $12. Tickets can also be purchased online (subject to additional fees). Group rate tickets are available. Visit missionplayhouse.org to learn more. Photos courtesy of the Harold Lloyd Trust www.sangabrielcity.com 9 Spring 2020
