              Full-Time Water Plant-Distribution Operator

The City of Gladstone, Michigan is hiring a permanent Full-Time Water Plant-Distribution
Operator (F-4, S-4, and D Wastewater) Hourly range $22.42-$24.69 full benefits package. Must
have one (1) year of experience in water or wastewater utility or any equivalent combination of
education and experience. Possess and maintain a current Michigan F-4 Water Treatment Plant
Operator Certification, S-4 Water Distribution Operator’s Certification and Michigan Class D
Sewage Treatment Works Operator’s Certification or possesses an equivalent out of state water
and wastewater certification, with the ability to obtain the required previously stated Michigan
certification within 12 months of hire. Associates degree AS in Water Treatment Technology
preferred.

Gladstone, Michigan is located in Michigan’s Beautiful Upper Peninsula on the shores of Little
Bay De Noc. The Community is a year-round playground, providing a wide range of outdoor

                                                WATER PLANT/DISTRIBUTION OPERATOR
Department: Water

Immediate Supervisor: Water Superintendent                                                           Date: April 2018

This job description does not constitute an employment agreement between the employer and employee and is subject to change
by the employer as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change.

I. GENERAL PURPOSE. Perform operational and mechanical repair duties in both the water treatment plant and distribution system.
Duties include process control, laboratory analysis, recordkeeping, chemical dosage control; maintenance and calibration of plant
equipment; building and grounds maintenance; work regular operational shifts including weekends and holidays. Distribution work
includes meter maintenance, meter installation, locating underground lines as per Miss Dig System, installing water taps and laterals,
operate valves and hydrants, works with DPW and contractors in both water main construction and repairs.

II. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: This position does not have supervisory duties. Occasionally will supervise seasonal employee as
shift operator.

III. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types
of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work
is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

    A.        Illustrative Listing.

               Primary Duties
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: (These examples do not include all
of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform).
              1. Operate and maintain water plant, booster station, elevated storage tank, and water distribution system.
              2. Operate, maintain, lubricate and inspect equipment including pumps, filters, valves, chlorinators, chemical feeders,
                  computers, laboratory equipment, air compressors, mowers, and vehicles.
              3. Perform laboratory analysis for process control, state reports and quality control / assurance requirements.
              4. Records statistical data on plant operations, process control, write, print and/or interprets reports as necessary.
              5. Collect samples for analysis and prepare necessary paperwork and ship samples out to respective labs.
              6. Monitor chemical inventories and chemical feed systems including chlorine, PACL, hydrofluosilicic acid, ortho-
                  phosphate, and polymer and makes dosage adjustments as necessary. Check for leaks and maintain appropriate
                  logs.
              7. Perform custodial duties, building, equipment and grounds maintenance, including electrical, heating, plumbing,
                  lighting, floor, wall and ceiling coverings, standby power generation systems as well as lawn and garden care;
              8. Cleans, inspects, and maintains filters, shore well and clarifiers and associated equipment in the distribution system,
                  booster station, and elevated storage tank.
              9. Performs customer service calls /meter calls
              10. Attend professional training to meet State licensing requirements.

                  Secondary Duties
         1.     Works with other City Departments such as Wastewater and DPW when necessary. Performs customer service duties
                and assist with cross connection control program.

    B.        Effect of Errors. Errors by the position are likely to not be readily detected and corrected; and may cause large
              expenditures, loss of life, and/or significant liability exposure.

IV. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS.

    A.        Education/Experience: Graduation from high school supplemented by two years college or technical training in biology,
              water technology, environmental science, chemistry, or a closely related field (Associates degree AS in Water Treatment
              Technology preferred). One (1) year of experience in water and wastewater utility or any equivalent combination of education
              and experience. Possess and maintain a current Michigan F-4 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification, S-4 Water
              Distribution Operator’s Certification and Michigan Class D Sewage Treatment Works Operator’s Certification or possesses
              an equivalent out of state water or wastewater certification, with the ability to obtain the required previously stated Michigan
              certification within 12 months of hire.
    B.        Possess and maintain Michigan’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Designation “B” with air-brake endorsement within six
              (6) months of hire. Possess and maintain a Michigan Class F-4 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification, S-4 Water
              Distribution Certification and Class D Sewage Treatment Works Operator’s Certification within 12 months of hire.

    B.        Experience. One-Year in Water/Wastewater Utility
