Noises from the Big End. Bearing in mind the saying “The only constant in life is Change”! then 2021 will definitely go down in the Australian history books as the year of Change. Hopefully, change will be for the better as we approach the 80% fully Vaccinated mark and have our freedoms restored, at least, for the coming Christmas period. For me, I have put my two AJS and Matchless projects on hold until 2022 and plan to have Christmas in Adelaide (sooner if the borders are open). As yet I have not received any nominations for the Presidency and need to remind you that as part of our Incorporation with the Office of Fair Trading, the club needs to elect a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and 4 committee members at the AGM on 24th November. If we are found to be non- compliant with the constitution, then our incorporated company (CEMCC of NSW inc.) must be wound up and all monies held in Sydney, Wollongong and Orange must be disbursed. To recap, the main reason why our club became an incorporated company was to ensure we had a ‘limited liability’ with regard to the law. I truly hope it is the intention of the members for our club to continue as an incorporated company, to this end, I ask you give serious consideration for the nomination of President at the November AGM. It looks like we will be able to resume face to face meetings at the Dundas sports club commencing with our monthly meeting on 27th October and therefore will be able to hold our AGM as a face to face meeting on 24th November. In addition, I will keep the Zoom calls The CEMCC needs you! active for those dates and hope we can maintain a constant WIFI connection. The Zoom calls will only last for 40 minutes, therefore a punctual start at 8pm will be required. For up to date details on club meetings, please check the website and events calendar. Yours in Classic Motorcycling……….David de Lapp. -2-

Have you ever: • lost a spanner in the shed, looked and looked, deciding I must buy another to replace it • fitted a new tube and pinched it putting it in • bought a must have part then found you already have two • fitted a 6v globe in a 12v system • vice versa • run out of petrol after just leaving home • run out of petrol after someone asked "have you enough petrol" • paid a bill, twice • used a metric spanner on a Whitworth nut or bolt • or vice versa • drilled a tapping hole to clearance size • forgot your name, sober • nearly got to work and realized it's a public holiday • say I'll have one more and had three • wake and not know what day it is • bought another motorcycle after declaring you've bought you last bike, 3 bikes ago • arrived at a ride departure point an hour after it had departed • bought another tool because you think you need it • moved something to a more logical place and can't find where you put it • after you refitted the wheel found out you fitted the tyre with the rotation direction wrong • put your clock back the hour at the start of daylight saving instead of forward • or the opposite at the end of daylight saving • found that lost spanner in the shed If you have said yes to any of these than maybe I’m normal???? CLASSIC CLATTER – NOVEMBER 2021 There are no Illawarra Branch Minutes for the October meeting as it was cancelled due to NSW Covid-19 Restrictions. Freedom, of a kind. We now have a ‘roadmap’ to reopening of NSW, so hopefully life can begin to return to what will be our ‘new’ normal, and for our members this should mean resuming long distance motorcycling (beyond 5 kilometres!). The closing date for submissions for the next edition is Friday 12 November 2021. Please note the next issue is a combined Dec/Jan edition and the next edition after that will be February 2022. So please bear that in mind if wishing to advise of rides/runs for Jan/Feb 2022 or placing of any advertisements. Occasional Comments At last the end of lockdowns is in sight, with 70% vaccination milestone passed and this coming Monday (11/10/21) being Freedom day for the double vaxxers. Jim Cummins is on the ball and has put forward plans for Covid safe rides to take place in the immediate future, so we should be moving again very soon in Sydney and Illawarra . A few days later lockdown is over, I have been able to visit the RMS and renew a HVS rego and also finally pick up an engine that I was lucky enough to have picked up and stored by Greg Cheney as it was outside my LGA , I am thankful for his help and he is probably happy to see it gone after having to work around the fairly large lump of VFR400 engine in his garage. Despite best intentions of keeping batteries charged, several of the bikes in the garage have batteries that will be in need of a charge, hoping they will recover properly. Alex has bought a smart charger that supposedly has ability to shock and recover some dubious batteries, we might have a few to test it on. In the shed work continues on the Triumph 500, slowly coming together with things taking longer than they should as there are very few parts that would have come out of the Triumph factory on the same bike. One of the hated jobs is making cables and this bike has a few, magneto, clutch, brake, but the worst is the throttle cable which because I am using twin carbs is a complex unit having a splitter and three inline adjuster, that means six bits of outer cable and three inner cable that have to be cut to the right lengths and six ends to be soldered, it took several hours to get even close to right. I had tried to reuse some parts and once it was all together I could not get both slides to return properly every time and after cleaning and re-cleaning the carbs, straightening a small dent in one of the delicate slides it just made little difference. In the end I had to remake 2 of the cables with fresh parts even adding a spring in the splitter, it seems that two small lengths of outer had a bit of rust inside and while the cable slid nicely when straight a bend in the run caused enough drag to cause issues. When remaking the cables I tried to take out a bit of the slack and overdid it, so then had to redo them again taking more time and more swearing to complete, but it seems the problems are all resolved. It is very sad to hear of the passing of Linda Cowper-Holdforth. Linda was an enthusiastic and active member in the early days of the club until the early 2000's and always active in the classic bike scene . A reminder to all that your membership falls due on 31st December each year and you need to be a financial member of the club for your HVS registered bikes. If you fail to renew by 31st December your bikes will effectively be un-registered until you renew your membership. I have a steady stream of renewals coming in at the moment but I hope for a tsunami of renewals soon. I would remind anyone doing a direct deposit to make sure you have included your details on the reference so it can be correctly attributed and you should also send a completed renewal form to me, via email if you like. The possibility of escape from lockdown has meant a bit of a surge in new member applications, welcome new members and we hope to see you on runs very soon. Alan Harper Vale: Charles Stammers Charles was a long-time member of the Orange CEMCC and was an active supporter holding positions such as secretary and ride coordinator. Charles recently attended a ride to Parkes Aero museum and was a back-up support for the last rally. Charles was very well known in aviation circles and a number of car clubs as well as supporting the community through the Lions Club. Charles passed away suddenly last month. We will miss Charles and we extend our condolences to Trish and Charles' family. -6-

Dave’s Diary No.32 – Ignition coils Dear diary, Bearing in mind the uncertainty of delivery for parts from overseas (during this Pandemic) and my growing reluctance to purchase Chinese made products. Therefore, (considering 12-volt parts are more readily available throughout the automotive world), I started searching for companies located in Australia to supply ignition parts for my Matchless G9 twin, to suit my 12-volt conversion. The Matchless has a Lucas 18D2 distributor, converted with electronic (Hall effect) points, which I had purchased years before from the UK Manufacturer (see Dave’s Diary No 24). My search began for a suitable coil, which I could have purchased from the UK, if it were not for the exorbitant postage costs. For best effect, with electronic points, the 12V coil needs to have a minimum primary resistance of 3 Ohms and approximately 7K Ohms on the secondary. In order to limit EMI (electromagnetic interference) when using copper core HT leads, it is recommended to use (5K Ohm) resistor plug caps with standard plugs. Otherwise, HT leads with silicone insulation surrounding a carbon ferroflex core are recommended for minimal EMI. Initially I was very confused by the multitude of coils out there in the marketplace, most were sold under the manufacturer’s part number with very little technical information and most with no country of manufacture information. High-performance coils have a larger diameter than the original Lucas MA series motorcycle coils, as the larger diameters are either oil filled or resin filled, to tolerate a greater operating heat range. For the Matchless, even though the replacement coil is larger than the original Lucas MA6 or MA12 coil, there is still sufficient room for it to fit under the tank, below the top frame tube. The predominant brands being Bosch and Lucas with prices that varied by 50% depending on who you purchased them from. My technical search and phone around, narrowed the field to ‘Bosch’ from Brazil / ‘Lucas’ from UK / ‘Remax’ from UK / ‘Fuelmiser’ + ‘Calibre’ + ‘Goss’ + ‘Flame Thrower’ all from China. Every one of These coils are available for immediate delivery from Australian resellers like Repco / Supercheap / Autopro / Auto one as well as on the internet. All have similar specifications suitable for my application. Needless to say, all with varying prices from $40 to $120. To my surprise, there was an offering from ‘NGK’, with a new model replacement coil, only released in the past few years. As the Japanese quality is well renowned, I liked the thought of using NGK spark Plugs with NGK resistor caps and an NGK coil. I found a company called ‘Spark Plugs Direct’ offering a special deal with free delivery on orders over $50 and with a best price guarantee. The NGK coil was listed at the bargain price of $34.95 so with my order of Plugs and resistor caps, I qualified for free delivery. My search on the internet shows NGK spark plugs are made in Japan, so I assume all NGK products are made in Japan. But to my surprise, when I received the Coil, the accompanying literature (written specifically for Australia) stated ‘Made in China’. Sometimes, (after all your research), no matter how hard you try, it appears you just can’t win, as Chinese made products appear to be secretly hidden in all our everyday items. Ironically, “I must accept the things I cannot change” (Old Chinese proverb?) Yours in Motorcycling David de Lapp -8-
FREE TO GOOD HOME – PUCH TYR RL 125 I have a 1962 (possibly) PUCH Motor Scooter in pieces and I would like to give it to someone who has the time and interest in either repairing it or using it for parts. The body has damage from rust, wheels have rust damage also, the motor has surface rust and I feel all the parts are there in milk crates plus spares and official manual (which is unfortunately in Austrian) - it has all the specifications for the Puch covering all the body and key points along with plans/drawings for the electrics. Please contact me if anyone is interested in viewing the bike, it is stored by the side of our garage, Terry Stewart 0413 704 104. -9-

GRINDING WHEELS (for dummies) The first thing I look at when I go into someone’s workshop for the first time is the state of the bench grinding wheels. It tells me a lot about the person. Well just one factor anyway. They could be really intelligent and honest and sincere people but just don’t know how to look after their grinding wheels. Or maybe they DO look after their grinding wheels. Surprise. In this short segment, I will try and explain the different types and preparation required for a good grinding wheel. The comments are only related to bench grinders. You know, the ones with a wheel on each side that always vibrate the bench and are noisy? Never do a good job and you are always worried that they might explode because of the aluminium you ground on it the day before causing it to be badly filled up and it cannot cut properly any more. Not to mention the out of balance. As our old departed friend Ted Conran would say, “You stupid boy”. Here are a couple of pictures of poorly maintained grinding wheels. Looks like paint or wood has been used to abuse the poor thing. The filled up abrasive particles cannot present a sharp edge to the job any more. Wheel needs dressing big time. This example shows clearly how detrimental aluminium or any other alloy thereof is to an otherwise good grinding wheel. For a start the wheel fills up with the soft alloy, that part can no longer provide a fresh sharp edge to the work but the unfilled part of the wheel does. As the unfilled part wears the whole thing becomes grossly out of balance. Vibration starts and it just goes down hill from there. If the bench is vibrating with no tool rest, what hope is there of the work being done properly? Note in both the pictures above there is no tool rest attached. This is very dangerous and poor practice and there is no tactile feedback for the operator. With a tool rest the operator can gauge how much and at what angle the work is presented to the wheel. This is how a correctly dressed and maintained wheel should look. This is commonly called a green wheel. Silicone carbide. Designed for grinding tungsten carbide or cemented carbide tools. Note, tool rest in correct position. On centre with the wheel. These tool rests with the groove for sharpening drills have always annoyed me. Its a gimmick. Anyone who knows how to sharpen a drill properly doesn’t need this crap. Anyway, its a general purpose wheel with a course or roughing grit. But don’t abuse it. Light cuts will get you there. Grinding is a slow operation, unlike milling or turning by comparison. If its going to be a while, I recommend a small container of water nearby so the job can be kept cool enough to hold. The bottom of an old beer can be used to good effect. But make sure the contents are emptied properly beforehand, nothing goes to waste in my workshop. - 22 -
Another well dressed wheel. This is also a general purpose wheel but finer grit. For finishing a sharp edge for example. Note how the corners have been dressed to provide a good 90 degree edge. A well dressed wheel also runs far smoother because it is running true to its axis of rotation. Not off centre. Tool rest in this picture is just a bit too close to the wheel. But if small parts are being ground then that could be why. This is an aluminium oxide wheel. Very soft but can provide a really keen edge for lathe tools and drills made from High Speed Steel. Again the edges have been dressed as well to help with trueness and balance. Sometimes a High Speed Steel tool needs a sharp re-entrant angle. This helps. So here I am talking about how a well dressed wheel can be of tremendous help in your workshop rather than a hindering and potentially dangerous item. How do we dress a grinding wheel? Unfortunately I don’t have any shares in a diamond mine. But a diamond dresser is really the best way to do it. I have tried the star wheel types and never really achieved the same good results as a diamond tool. Looking back, I think the star wheel types were a con. Also there are others that use a segment of a broken or shattered grinding wheel as a dressing tool. Very dubious practice in deed. The fact that they are in possession of such an item makes me feel uncomfortable. Maybe we can tell a lot about a person by looking at their grinding wheels after all. This is how a diamond dressing tool is applied. Constant even and straight pressure as the wheel is traversed. So there you go. No more excuses. Good luck and good grinding. Mark Mansell. 274. - 23 -
The Empire Strikes Back – A man and his bike. (Contributed by David Scott.) The BSA Empire motorcycle is a beautiful example of the classic Val Page design, produced by BSA from 1936 until 1939. It was available in a 249 cc, 348 cc and 499 cc versions and incorporated a number of new features for the time. Bob MacKinney, a member of the CEMCC Orange branch commenced restoring a 1936 500cc Empire Star over 40 years ago, when he purchased a frame. Over the years, in a labour of love, Bob patiently gathered or made parts, so that by 2017 it was almost complete. Amongst other things, Bob had made moulds to cast a replica primary chain cover. Unfortunately, time Bob MacKinney and his Empire Star. ran out for Bob, who sadly passed away in 2017. The Empire Star, about 80% complete, then passed to his daughter Jennifer and son-in- law Matt Morgan, a motorcycle enthusiast. Matt finally completed the restoration this year and the resplendent Empire Star made its first public debut, becoming an instant attraction with the public! There is no doubt that Bob would be thrilled with the final restoration and to see and hear the Empire Star back on the road! Matt Morgan and the finished Empire Star. - 24 -
