he year of “Perfect Vision 2020” is upon us. Your Board is busy planning the year for everyone to enjoy
                                                                                                                         Nicole Ferry

our Club. Sadly, this month we will say “goodbye” (for now) to our American Magic team. They will pack
up “Defiant” to be shipped to Cagliari, Italy, for the beginning of the preliminary races to be held in April.
I hope you have gotten your limited edition poster that PYC is selling on their behalf. If you are looking to
buy more of their swag to show your support, go to Americanmagic.com. They have a shop online where
you can get jackets, shirts, and hats, to name a few. I should say “replacement hats,” too. I lost my first AM
hat when I capsized a Lightening in the Bay. To show our love for them, PYC is partnering with the City of
Pensacola and the Port of Pensacola to send them off properly. On March 16, 2020, at 5:00 pm, we will host
a send-off party at the Fish House, on its back deck. Thanks to Collier Merrill for the venue. It should be a
great time. I hope you can make it!

We do have a hugely busy April, so I want to draw your attention to a few dates.
    • April 10th, (Good Friday), we will have our Annual Crawfish Boil, catered by Broussards. Be sure to make reservations if
you intend to attend. Broussards travels to Louisiana to bring them back to us. It is all you can eat, so I hope you’ll join us.
And, for those of you who don’t like crawfish, our Chef Steven will prepare a menu for you, as well. We will have musical
entertainment on the back patio. In Louisiana, men eat 10 pounds and women eat 5 pounds. In Florida, it’s more like 3
pounds per woman and 5 pounds per guy. I think it’s because Floridians “don’t peel very well.” Fear not, I am the seasoned
crawfish peeler. Happy to help! ( See Ad on Page 21)

    • Easter is April 12! Seating starts at 11:00 am. It is such a fun event. The Easter Bunny attends and there are sack races and
spoon races for the kids. The Egg Hunt starts at 12:00. Be early because a-time-or-two, we have been known to be incapable
of holding back the egg seekers! You don’t want to miss it. You do not have to eat at PYC in order to enjoy the activities,
though. (See Ad on Page 11 )

    • We are also returning to the Blue Wahoos Stadium for a game between our Blue Wahoos and Biloxi on April 23rd. Gates
open at 6:00 and the game starts at 6:35 pm. Bring your kids! We have reserved the Winn-Dixie Party Deck. The cost is $33
per person, which includes a hat, an Americana buffet, soda, and . . . PYC is kicking in 2 kegs. Seating is limited to 200, and
we sell out every year! Don’t wait until the last minute to make reservations. (See Ad on Page 23)
As I have mentioned before, subscribe to our Google Calendar, and you won’t miss
out on upcoming events.
Spring has always been my favorite time of year in Florida. Don’t miss out on all that
our Club has to offer! And, as always, if you need something, don’t hesitate to call.

                         “Chasing the Cup” Presentation

Rachael Gillette, & Cynthia Cannon See you at the Crawfish Boil!
                                                                                                                   PAGE 3 | JIB SHEET

2020 is picking up speed from where we left off in 2019, with a focus on maintaining a great membership,
expanding our sailing fun from junior camps to offshore racing, and keeping our focus upon reducing our
financial debt at the fastest rate in our Club’s history.
On the membership side, we will gradually begin raising our cap from 725 members to 750. Our managers
know we can accommodate this modest increase in numbers, and as long as we do so gradually, this should
not be any cause for difficulty with any of our facilities.

The US Sailing Leadership Symposium was recently held in San Diego, and members Talbot Wilson, new
Rear Commodore Dr. David Chandler, and I attended, representing PYC thoroughly and well. PYC will
host the US Sailing Youth Championship this coming June, and we had several meetings with officials,
race officers, judges, and board members of US Sailing to work on the array of details for that event. This
will be the final qualifier for the Youth World Championship, and the competition will be tops in the USA. Additionally, the CEO
of US Sailing, Jack Gierhart, has committed to being here for that event, as will several of the higher-ranking officers in US Sailing.
As most of you reading this will know, we have been the winter training base for “American Magic,” the America’s Cup challenger
from New York Yacht Club. Sadly, their time with us ends the second week of March, but as a Club, we will remain in close contact
with the team, and we will be coordinating with the New York Yacht Club in establishing travel packages for any members wishing
to attend the 36th America’s Cup competition in Auckland, New Zealand in Spring of 2021.
Just as “American Magic” winds up their Pensacola sailing practices, a new foiling boat will be on the Bay, training periodically
through early May. This is a 30’ foiling trimaran called a TF 10, which is a relatively new and cutting edge class of racing foil boat.
We have two training in Pensacola now, and it is likely a third will join soon, which is a “feather in the cap” of Pensacola and of PYC,
as well.
We are working on big plans for sailing events through the year, with a very special excursion to New Orleans over Labor Day week-
end for the Centennial Celebration at Southern Yacht Club. PYC won the first Lipton Cup 100 years ago, and we aim to win again
this time ... We will be finalizing plans in the coming weeks, and we will keep the Membership updated as to the specifics of the plan,
as well as how you can join in the fun!
This is going to be a special year for us at PYC, and as always .. members are wanted and encouraged to get involved in the Club’s
events and committees, as well as the sailing and yachting events. All of your Board Members, Committee Chairs, and numerous
volunteers are available to answer any questions and to share their experiences as well!

Aloha,
Tom

                         INSURANCE
Steve Cozart is the chairperson of the PYC Insurance Committee, and he is leading an impressive effort
to update and assure adequate coverage for flood, wind, liability, and business continuity. We are also
considering cyber-security insurance, but we are currently awaiting a premium quote. In addition, we will
also be reviewing our office policies and procedures to minimize our cyber risk and foil any ransom-ware
attacks, such as that recently endured by the City of Pensacola. The protection of PYC member information
                         is a top priority.

PYC FACILITIES COMMITTEE
To leverage the knowledge and experience of our Club members, we have enlisted several individuals to serve on the
PYC Facilities Committee.

CURRENT FACILITIES PROJECTS
There are several PYC projects completed by the time of this Jib Sheet publication.
   • Greg and James have completed repairs on the concrete around the marina crane. We have new landscaping at our
Cypress Street entrance to match the landscaping enhancements at our main walk-in entrance. We dismasted the Fish
Boat static display by our front door due to advanced rot and safety concerns. PYC Vice Commodore Tom Pace, who
is the Fish Class Worlds Champion and Fish Class President, is working on producing a new fiberglass Fish Boat mockup to
replace our decaying relic, with funds obtained outside of the PYC budget.
    • We sold the trailer used for the 29er boats obtained from our Satori Foundation. We will be hosting the US Sailing 29er
National Championship Regatta this coming June.
    • We previously deferred resurfacing of the tennis courts and construction of paved connections to serve as additional proper
parking for the banquet area. The PYC Board diverted funds for this project last year to manage erosion problems by the
beach. The completion of this project is under consideration for 2020.
                                                                                                               PAGE 5 | JIB SHEET

currently in the process of submission.

LONG-RANGE PLANNING
In conjunction with the Long-Range Planning Committee, we will be assessing long-term maintenance needs to assist future
budgetary planning. We acknowledge that not everything we submit will be implemented, but we anticipate that we will identify
priorities and set the stage for the future of the PYC. The PYC Facilities Committee will be brainstorming about facility improvements
going forward, and we invite your suggestions for evaluation.

                     Deserving Recipient of GYA’s
Jack and Flo Scheib Service Award

  Congratulations to P/C John H. Matthews (PYC/NYCP),
recipient of the 2019 Jack and Flo Scheib Service Award.
This perpetual award, which was established on December 6,
1992, by the Gulf Yachting Association’s Board of Directors,
recognizes and honors individuals who, over the years, have
made “significant and outstanding contributions in service to
  the sport of sailing.”

(The selection of the recipient is made by a committee composed of the
Current GYA Commodore and the two Immediate Past GYA Commodores.)

                                Grant Lopez, Junior Dad-of-the-Year
                                      Recipient of Escambia County’s
                                             Medal of Valor Award

                                             “Racer Turned Cop” Grant Lopez

Escambia County, Florida awarded our own Grant Lopez with the Medal of Honor Award for his bravery during the
terrorist attack at Pensacola Naval Air Station.
His bravery is noteworthy, having served in two risk-prone careers: first as a car racer, then as a policeman. Grant has
recently taken on another part-time career - as an active parent/participant in PYC’s Junior Sailing Program. The
Juniors, an enthusiastic, driven, and active bunch of sailors, recently named Grant the award winner as Junior Dad-of
the Year! Congratulations and thank you for all that you do for Pensacola and for the Pensacola Yacht Club.

The Sir Thomas Lipton Interclub Challenge Centennial
This year marks the centennial of the first Sir Thomas Lipton Interclub Challenge
sailed in 1920. A grand celebration will be held on Labor Day to commemorate
that first regatta. In recognition of PYC’s significant contributions to the event,
I will offer in each Ship’s Log a highlight from those 100 years of Gulf Yachting
Association racing history.
As written last month, Rathbone De Buys designed the Fish Class sloops to jump
start inter-club racing. However, when Sir Thomas Lipton contributed a huge
silver trophy to the annual event, the competition became intense and garnered
national attention. Although the trophy was given to Southern Yacht Club and
valued at $5000 in 1920, it was to be loaned to the winning team until the next
challenge. PYC won that first regatta and the right to bring the Lipton Cup back
to Pensacola. Elebash Jewelers took out a bond so they could display the incredible
trophy in their store window.

The Lipton Cup continued to be given to the winning club until it was damaged
in the 1970’s. To preserve its condition, Southern Yacht Club then kept it in their
possession while a half model was loaned to the annual winner. The original was
completely destroyed in the disastrous fire during Hurricane Katrina that consumed
the Clubhouse. Under the direction of Tom Long of SYC, a new trophy was forged by
Comyn’s, the original silversmiths, and is once again on permanent display. A more
detailed history of this gorgeous trophy is included in the forthcoming centennial
book that will be available later this year.

As the Club enters March, PYC will have conducted its first US Sailing Club “Race Officer Qualification
Course” with George Hero, Southern Yacht Club, serving as the instructor.
Successful completion of this seminar leads to an individual becoming certified as a US Sailing Club Race Officer.
George made presentations on the “Racing Rules of Sailing for 2017 – 2020.” US Sailing produces these rules
every 4 years under license from World Sailing, which is the international ruling body for sailing. These rules are
reviewed and updated every four years. Generally, these racing-rule changes, corrections, additions and deletions
are the result of suggestions made by competitors and race officials from around the world. These suggestions
are reviewed, debated, and finally voted on by volunteer members of the Racing Rules Committees at World Sailing and in several
countries.

“Race Officer Qualification Course” Instructor George Hero
This seminar was attended by 26 individuals, ranging in experience from limited-to-no-knowledge of competitive sailing to those
having years of knowledge who are qualified race officials seeking re-certification. We had representatives from Fort Walton YC, Gulf-
port YC, St. Andrews Bay YC, Buccaneer YC, Navy Yacht Club, and Pensacola Yacht Club. It is my plan to host at least two more
of these courses in the future and add an “Advanced Race” course in the mix.

Often, the “Racing Rules of Sailing” (RRS) changes and/or corrections are the result of discussions coming directly from these
seminars and actual results of discussions coming from races and regattas. This is one reason why competitive sailors and participants
are encouraged to participate in these “Race Management Seminars.” It is through this direct involvement that the racing rules are
improved for the next rulebook. Your comments and proposals may be sent to rules@ussailing.org.

A diverse group of sailors achieved certification and/or recertification as US Sailing Club Race Officers

In addition to certified/qualified Race Management Officials, this sport must have qualified Judges. Judges are essential in this sport to
conduct protests and/or redress hearings resulting from misconduct, protests and redress filed by competitors involved in sanctioned
races or regattas. The recently scheduled “Judges Seminar” had to be cancelled due to the lack-of-participants. I hope to
re-schedule a new seminar very soon to help provide qualified judges for all our races. If you are interested, I encourage you to talk
with me about your interest and participation.

PYC is preparing to enter our full-fledged racing season! There have already been two races held on the bay by Pensacola Beach
Yacht Club. Both of these races are part of the Pensacola Bay Championship Series. They are the Frostbite Regatta and the
Valentine’s Regatta. With 10 more regattas on the schedule, there are plenty of opportunities for you to participate, as a serious
competitor or as a newbie. All you have to do is ask me or any PYC member who sails on Pensacola Bay (or elsewhere).
The traditional Maxine Series, which features three races, each hosted by the three Pensacola Bay yacht clubs, began with Maxine
#1 on February 29 during the Commodore’s Cup#1 and hosted by Navy Yacht Club Pensacola. Of near-term interest for PYC
is the remainder of the Maxine Series, the Fishing Rodeo (Ad on Page 6), and the “Safety At SeaTM Seminar.” (Ad on Page 12.)
Remember, our traditional bi-annual Race-to-Mexico, the Regata al Sol, is coming up in May. It is always a fun event regardless of
whether you race down or just fly down and join the parties.
As a reminder, PYC will have the opportunity to host two national championships in June. The first will be the US Sailing Youth
National Championship June 29 – 24, and the second will be the US Sailing 29er National Championship. With these two
championships there will be many opportunities for PYC members to participate as regatta volunteers to insure the success of these
events. I will be calling on you to help.
All of the scheduled activities that PYC is having on the water can be found on the PYC Website. Please check the schedule of
races and activities on the PYC Website and avail yourself of these events. I look forward to seeing you on the water and around the
Clubhouse.

        “Dear Pensacola Yacht Club Member,
Please accept this letter to introduce you to the 2020 Pensacola Yacht Club (PYC) Summer Camp. As you read
this, the entire Summer Camp Staff is busy preparing for the nine weeks of fun and learning that lie ahead. We are
very excited for another great summer of sailing!
It is our hope that the skills learned in our classes will provide the foundation for a lifelong recreational hobby
because, sailing is one of the few sports where size, physical strength, and gender are equalized on the water.
Furthermore, many of the skills learned on the water are transferable to daily life: responsibility, seamanship,
confidence, and problem solving, among others.
PYC prides itself on providing the safest, most enjoyable, and most exciting experience for sailing summer
campers. Many of our current instructors developed their lifelong passion for sailing as PYC Campers, themselves.
We look forward to sharing this tradition with you.
As the first day of camp approaches, we anticipate that you may have questions about our program. The Parents
Handbook will provide detailed information, including the Camp’s schedule, what personal gear campers should
bring, and important policies relating to safety both on and off the water. Please take a minute to review it, and please
share this important information with your son or daughter. It is designed to help you understand what to expect,
what to bring, where to be, and when to be there.
The 2020 Summer Sailing Camp information has been published and registration is now open.
We have introduced some changes to the Summer Camps such as a Half-Day Option and a Multi-week Discount.
Below, you will be able to find all the information and registration link. (Click on the buttons for Summer Sailing
Camp 2020, 2020 Next Mark or for 2020 Adult Summer Sailing).
On behalf of the staff, instructors and Board of Directors, we welcome you to Pensacola Yacht Club and look
forward to a summer of sailing with you.
        Thank you so much,
        César Travado”

the planning meeting held earlier this month. We planned several interesting events while dining on
PYC’s delicious chicken wings and coconut shrimp. We are considering a cruise to Gulfport to cheer for
our Challenge Cup team, two raft ups in October, (one for Lost Bay and one for the Blue Angels) and
a Thanksgiving Dinner raft up the weekend before the holiday just to name a few. Thanks to all who
attended and a special thank you to everyone who volunteered to be a host this year.

The next raft up is scheduled for March 14-15. Ruth and Johnny Smith have volunteered to be hosts
and have chosen Fort McRee as the destination. Be sure to bring some firewood to add to the beach
bonfire. It always feels so cozy on cool nights. Come join the fun. Bring a dish to share for Saturday evening and again for our
famous Mimosa/Bloody Mary Brunch on Sunday morning. We are sure to hear more from Johnny and Ruth in the next several days.
Remember “time and tide change all things,” so stay tuned to your email and to the club’s Face Book page.

D o You Ride? Bob Kriegel

T he winter hasn’t been too bad, but thankfully March & Spring are
finally here! Time to start sailing and biking again!
Bob Kriegel & Johnny Smith did a tour of Carrabelle, St. Marks, &
Steinhatchee the weekend of February 15th. The weekend started off
pretty, but chilly. The “intrepid weather prognosticators” tried to get
ahead of an approaching rainy front that would not catch them if they
rounded the Panhandle and went south. Wrong!!
Bob and Johnny met up with Jim & Judy Crongeyer in Carrabelle on Saturday, recounted old adventures, and damaged a great
bottle of rum. They managed to stay out of the confined Carrabelle Police Station, and headed out for the St. Marks National Wildlife
Refuge – a gorgeous 68,000-acre national park generally south of Tallahassee – and that is where the front caught up with them. They
proceeded to Steinhatchee in the rain, and arrived just in time to watch the Fiddler Crab Festival wind down. Steinhatchee is another
of those “must visit” Florida towns – an old fishing village on the Steinhatchee River. Rumor has it that the Steinhatchee River has
the only waterfall in Florida. The seafood in Steinhatchee has to be among the best in the State. They headed back to Pensacola on
Monday, again - in the rain, which cleared up as they crossed the Escambia River Bridge. All told, it was a great ride, and well worth
putting on the agenda for a future trip!
Next, a group of us are headed to Daytona for Bike Week. Marco Stolfi took his magnificent RV – and bike - and parked at the Finish
Line RV Park behind Hooters on International Blvd near the Speedway from Thursday the 12th thru Sunday. “Chef Marco” regaled
all with his sumptuous breakfasts each morning! Darrel Harrison and Alan McMillan, among others, joined him. The itinerary for
Bike Week includes a visit to the Halifax River Yacht Club. This even should always be on your calendar, whenever possible!
We have two scheduled rides in March – a weekday ride March 4th. We will meet at 1000 hours, and either take the beach route to
Navarre, then Milton & Grover T’s - or - take the scenic central Santa Rosa County route to Grover T’s. Riders Choice! Let Bob
Kriegel know if you can make it!
Then, Johnny Smith will lead a ride Saturday, March 29th, destination to be determined. Give him any suggestions or destinations
you may have!
And lastly, “Life is Good; Have Fun!”
