Mohabbatein (transl. This is love) is an Indian family drama which aired from 3 December 2013 to 18 December 2019 on Star Plus.[1] Produced by Ekta Kapoor under Balaji Telefilms, it starred Divyanka Tripathi Dahiya and Karan Patel as Ishita and Raman.[2] The story was initially based on Manju Kapur's 2011 novel Custody.[3] In July 2019, Karan
Patel left the series and was replaced by Chaitanya Choudhury.[4] Choudhry's character was later revealed to be an imposter as Karan Patel returned in November 2019 for a farewell performance.[5] Plot Set in Delhi, the show follows the love story of Tamil Dentist Dr. Ishita Iyer and Punjabi CEO Raman Kumar Bhalla. Ishita can't conceive a child
due to certain complications and forms a motherly bond with his daughter Ruhi, who was abandoned by his former wife Shagun Arora. Shagun left Raman for Ashok Khanna, a rich bachelor and is in a live-in relationship with him. Eventually, Ishita and Raman marry each other for the sake of Ruhi and so that they can gain her legal custody. Ashok
plans to marry Shagun to trap Mihika. However, after Mihir attacks Ashok's brother Sooraj, Mihika marries Ashok to save Mihir from going to jail. This creates a rift between the two sisters that is later resolved. Shagun continues to create trouble for the two. She later reforms and unites with the Bhalla family along with her and Raman's son, Aditya.
Ishita and Raman have a daughter named Pihu. Later, a scheming lawyer, Nidhi, kidnaps Pihu. To rescue Pihu, Ishita end up leaving Ruhi's hand and Nidhi kidnaps Ruhi instead. 7 years later Ishita now lives in Australia with her childhood friend Mani and his daughter Aliya. Ruhi has grown up, but lives disguised as a famous male singer, Ruhaan. She
lives with a torturous Nidhi in Australia. Soon, Aliya becomes Ruhaan's (Ruhi) secretary. Ishita finds out about Ruhi and reunites with Raman. Ruhi refuses to stay with her parents at first but later does. Ruhi returns to India and lives with Ishita and Raman in the Bhalla house. Shagun and Mani eventually get married. Adi and Aliya get engaged. 1
year later Shagun, Mani, Aliya, and Pihu live in Bangkok, Thailand. Raman keeps a close eye on them. Pihu finally meets Ishita and accepts her as her mother. They return to India. They struggle with Ruhi's love interests with Sohail, who is Nidhi's brother. Sohail wants revenge from the Bhalla family and targets Ruhi to complete his plan. He
eventually gets arrested. Shagun suffers a miscarriage. Raman's multiple arrests as he is mistakenly blamed for Mani's death. His innocence is proved when Mani is brought alive. Pihu then accidentally pushes her cousin Ananya Khurana Who is Rman's Sister Simmi, and her Brother in Law Param's Daughter down the stairs, and Ananya dies. Ishita
takes the blame and is imprisoned. 2 years later The Bhallas visit Budapest, Hungary for a business trip, as part of a revenge scam by Simmi and Param for their daughter Ananya's death. Aliya begins gambling, and Pihu is in a boarding school. Raman is depressed and gives away his company to Param. Ishita is released as terminally ill, and a
reformed Ashok reopens her case. Simmi instigates everyone against Ishita, drugs Raman to make him lose his memories of Ishita. And Param tries to frame Aliya in a murder case, but both are defeated and exposed by Ishita. Ishita remarries Raman to save Bhallas from Simmi, but Raman keeps his distance from her because of Simmi's drugs. Ishita
attempts to punish Ruhi's molester Nikhil but loses her eyes in the scuffle. Raman regains his sanity, and Ashok dies, saving Ishita. Simmi finds out Pihu was behind Ananya's death and submits her to juvenile custody. Adi begins to conspire against Raman but is thrown out of the house. He kidnaps his first wife, Roshni and Ishita are forced to shoot
him. 8 months later Pihu returns to see Ishita, who now shelters a pregnant Roshni and is alienated from the Bhallas to kill Adi. The Bhallas want to get Roshni back as she is carrying Adi's child. Roshni promises to hand over the custody of her child if the Bhallas accept Ishita. They accept her condition. Roshni's baby is handed over to Mihika, who is
now married to Raman's brother Romi, leaving Ashok. Param kidnaps Pihu and Simmi reforms. Raman suffers from a spinal injury in the rescue. It worsens as he is improperly treated by an alcoholic doctor Rajat, who later commits suicide due to his humiliation. Ruhi receives a marriage proposal from Rohan, but he mistakes Aliya for Ruhi and falls in
love with her. A widowed Aliya initially rejects him despite the family's wishes but later agrees. Ruhi falls in love with Rohan's brother, Karan. It is later revealed that Rohan and Karan are Dr Rajat's nephews, and the whole proposal is a sham to humiliate the Bhallas. The brothers marry Aliya and Ruhi, and on the wedding night, along with their
mother, they shame the girls and reveal their true motives. Heartbroken, they run away from there and return to their home. Rohan later opposes his mother's plans and sides with the Bhallas as he realises he really loves Aliya. Ishita encounters Yug, Adi's look-alike. Karan brings in Yug to drive a wedge between Rohan and Aliya but is roped in with
Rohan's opinions and soon falls in love with Ruhi for real. Ruhi doesn’t accept him as she is still reeling from the pain he caused her, but eventually, with her family’s help, she realises she has fallen for Karan again. Yug reminds Aliya of Adi. An insecure Rohan tries to win Aliya back. Rohan realises his mistake, but he soon dies after saving Raman and
Karan from enemies. Aliya marries Yug when a woman named Neha comes in and claims to be his wife. Neha starts to live with the Bhallas. Eventually, she is exposed, and her intention to take revenge on Yug is revealed. Raman leaves for a business meeting. The family learns that Raman's flight crashed with no chance of his survival. They break
down while Ishita refuses to believe the news. Arjit Saxena marks his entrance. He is revealed to have kidnapped Raman. Ishita learns about it and rushes to find Raman. Arjit drops Raman off a building and flees while Ishita rushes Raman to the hospital. Due to severe damage, Raman is given a new face shocking the Bhallas. Natasha and Sunny
mark their entry into the Bhallas lives with Natasha claiming Raman to be her husband, Shardul. It is later revealed that the Raman staying with the Bhallas is indeed Shardul (Ishita's college friend who's later revealed as Arjit's brother-in-law), while the real Raman is in a coma. Raman recovers and is brought home. As Karan and Ruhi prepare to
marry again, Ruhi discovers that just like Ishita, she can't conceive. Initially, Sudha plans to cancel the marriage, but later she accepts Ruhi. Ruhi and Karan marry and adopt a baby girl. My
dentist sorted my problems a lot, so I brought that character alive"[9] The show was initially titled as Custody but was renamed Mera Tera Rishta Purana which was again changed to Yeh Hai Mohabbatein.[10] The production began about a year before its premiere but the launch was delayed due to creative differences and unavailability of time slot.
[11][12][13] In November 2019, Ekta Kapoor revealed, "When I started Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, I remember going to Gaurav Banerjee from Star Plus and asking him for a non prime time slot because I wanted to do a show on a social issue. I had stopped doing much television and I wanted to make YHM without the trappings of a TRP driven show. A
show about a woman who cannot have children, a stepmother who according to Indian terms is considered bad! Words in India like barren and evil stepmother got used so often and labelled women in the worst poss way. This show got so much love that it went on for six years. And from a non prime time slot to a prime time slot."[14] In September
2014, Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor were to promote their film Finding Fanny in the series for which the leads Tripathi Dahiya and Patel had to shoot a sequence with them.[15] As Patel delayed to the sets for shooting, the script was changed on Patel's absence at last minute as the films stars had to head on for other promotions.[16] On 11
May 2016, during filming of the wedding sequence of characters Romi and Mihika, the shoot was stalled owing to a fight between the production house and workers union.[17] On 25 July 2018, the shoot was stalled for a while during bandh in Mumbai.[18] Casting Divyanka Tripathi Dahiya was selected by Kapoor to play Ishita Iyer Bhalla.[19]

Mohabbatein received ratings than expected and even became forth number on Star Plus.[59] In 2014, on audience request, it got a dual slot of 7:30pm and 11:00pm (IST). Star Plus SVP marketing Nikhil Madhok stated that the move was made after audiences’ feedback that a section of viewers found the 11:00 pm slot too late. He further explained,
“This was a show where repeat viewing the next day or viewing on online digital medium is very high. So the dual airing will not only help the existing viewers who love the show to watch it twice but also add a whole new set of viewers".[59] In early 2016, it lost its steady position from top five, juggling in top ten weekly Hindi GEC list in weeks three
to seven of the year where it garnered 10.47, 10.09, 10.95, 10.59 and 10.34 million impressions while in week five, it occupied third position.[60] In week 29 of 2016 it garnered 10.022 million impressions occupying third position in Hindi GEC.[61] In week 41, it was at fourth position with 9.687 million impressions.[62] Starting in January 2017, the
show began to falter in the TRP ratings when the show's focus shifted to the new generation.[63] Nevertheless, the show is very popular in the UK, being the most-watched Indian show.[64][65] The climax of Ruhi-Nikhil track leading to Ananya's death brought a sudden spike in the ratings in the first week of November 2017 (week 44) and the series
secured a place amongst the Top 10 shows after almost a year off this ranking.[66] With the Budapest track and the focus back on the main leads, the show reached the Top 5 in the second week of November 2017 (week 45).[67][68] In week 46 of the year 2017, the show further climbed to the 4th spot on the TRP chart, thus becoming the most-
watched show on StarPlus.[69] In week 47 of the year 2017, the show remained at No. 4 on the TRP charts and continued to be the most-watched show on StarPlus. The show continued to do well maintaining its No. 1 position on StarPlus in the following weeks. In week 51 of 2017, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein emerged as the most-watched show across all
Hindi GECs. (General Entertainment Channels)[70] In week 8 of the year 2018, the show remained at No. 3 on the TRP charts and continued to be the most-watched show on STAR Plus.[71] In May 2018, the show was shifted to 10:30 pm from 7:30 pm which led to a fall in TRPs. Roshni's baby track was received poorly by fans which led to a further
downfall in TRPs following which the broadcaster, StarPlus, intervened asking the producer, Ekta Kapoor, to change the storyline of the show also giving it a 6-month deadline to increase the ratings. Ishita's fake death drama to expose Param led to the show re-entering the top 20 shows in week 31 of the year 2018 occupying 18th place with 3889
million viewership.[72] After the change in show timings to late night TRPs have dropped ranging from 1.2 to 1.4 mostly but has been the slot leader since then. The show has been rumoured to go off air for a long time. However, the lead actor Divyanka Tripathi, who played Ishita Bhalla on the show, and the creative director Sandiip Sikcand refuted
all these rumours adding that the show has been doing exceedingly well at its time slot.[73] References ^ a b Keshri, Shweta (3 December 2013). "Ekta's latest show". The Telegraph.
