COWES CORINTHIAN YACHT CLUB - COWES WEEK PROGRAMME 2019
Commodore’s Cowes Week Update
We are now heading into our busiest time of the year. A lot of work has
been done to get us ready much of which is not visible. The dredging was
completed on programme and we now have sufficient water at all states
of the tide for our regular marina users and dry sailing boats. If you are a
marina user you will probably have noticed that most of the pontoon
decking has been replaced again as the previous material flexed too much.
There are a couple more days of work to complete the job which will be
undertaken between Classics Week and Cowes Week and then the job
will be complete. The Site Team has worked tirelessly supporting both the
dredging and pontoon decking programmes. Thanks to them we will be
                             ready for Cowes Week.
On the sailing front it is great to see increased activity in the fleets. The Andrew Cassell Foundation has
raised its profile under the guidance of Andy and Matt Grier. They have three Sonars entered for Cowes
Week this year which will be crewed by a mixture of able bodied and disabled sailors. If you would like
to sail with the Foundation contact Matt through the Office. I am delighted that we have two more Flying
Fifteens on site breathing more life into that fleet. The XOD entry for both Classics Week and Cowes
Week is solid as usual. In Cowes Week all clubs are invited to enter teams of three boats which must
be made up of a mixture of black and white group. We usually have plenty of white group boats but not
so many black, so if you have entered in black group we need you! Anyone who would like to be in a
team should contact the Office.
Socially we have a great programme lined up for you again in
Cowes Week. The Commodore’s Cocktail Party will be on Sunday
as is our tradition. Then on Wednesday the theme for our big night
                                       this year is Steampunk. This is nowhere near as scary as it sounds;
we are talking about HG Wells, Jules Verne, Mary Shelley etc,
                                       Victorian science fantasy.
In the interests of research the Flag Officers went to a Steampunk
festival and as you can see with a hat and a pair of goggles you can
join in the fun. Just dress to impress. We have the brilliant Wight
Hot Pipes who are steampunk personified – or bagpipes with
attitude. They will bring the house down as usual.
At the festival we discovered an amazing support act, Ichabod and his robotic steampunk band. He
comes with his own accessory, a caravan which he refers to as his submarine which houses his robots.
If you don’t go anywhere else this Cowes Week do not miss this one. Ichabod, alias Paul, will be staying
on for Friday when he will perform another of his acts to support the Tex Mex Firework Night Party.
As you are aware we are largely a club of volunteers. To send our sailors out full of energy we have
the famous CCYC bacon rolls available every morning and when they come back exhausted there are
burgers awaiting them. This is all done by volunteers and unfortunately we have lost Jo Brown this
year who we relied on heavily. So if you are able to help out with a morning or afternoon shift on the
barbecue that would be much appreciated, as usual contact the Office. On the final Saturday of Cowes
Week we will put the barbecue away and Christine’s Vintage Afternoon Teas will make a jolly civilised
way to end the week.

Enjoy the rest of the summer
