2023 Crawford W. Smith Scholarship Program
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Zeta Delta Sigma Alumni Chapter will award five
$1,000 scholarships to college-bound high school seniors demonstrating the
highest ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.
      ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHO IS PHI BETA SIGMA?
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated was founded by A. Langston Taylor,
Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown on January 9, 1914, at Howard
University in Washington, DC. It is one of the ‘Divine Nine’ historically African
American fraternities and sororities.

WHO IS ZETA DELTA SIGMA?
The Zeta Delta Sigma Alumni Chapter (ZDS) was chartered in 1962 and based
in Hampton, Virginia. The chapter comprises professionals across various
industries, including aerospace, education, government, logistics, and the
armed forces.

WHO IS CRAWFORD W. SMITH?
Brother Crawford W. Smith is one of Zeta Delta Sigma Chapter’s charter
members. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the Newport News
School District, serving as the first African American Director of Personnel.

WHO MAY APPLY? ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS?
The scholarship competition is open to any male high school senior who will
attend a four-year college or university. The scholarship does not require a
minimum grade point average. However, we hope you will identify students from
disadvantaged backgrounds and encourage them to apply.

IS THIS SCHOLARSHIP LIMITED TO AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS?
NO. Our fraternity prides itself on being known as the INCLUSIVE ‘we,’ not the
exclusive ‘we.’ Thus, we welcome all applicants of diverse backgrounds and
social strata.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO APPLY?
To get started, we have enclosed an application form. In addition, students must
submit a 500-word essay explaining their participation in a recent (within the last
calendar year) community service project and how it impacted themselves and

the people they served. The Education Committee will evaluate the essays on
their content and will make recommendations for awards.

WHEN IS THE DEADLINE?
The scholarship window will be from January 1-March 31, 2023. We will inform
the five winners by April 30, 2023.

We ask that you provide us with the date of your school’s senior/award night, so
a representative of ZDS may be present to acknowledge the awardee.

MY STUDENT IS AMONG THE WINNERS. WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS?
First of all, congratulations! After the notification of winners, we will provide them
with additional documents and release forms. Winners must submit proof of
enrollment before the disbursing of any winnings.

WHAT ARE THE OBLIGATIONS OF THE WINNERS?
Aside from submitting proof of college enrollment, there are no obligations for
applying for or accepting the award.

Furthermore, please note that the winners may need to complete a release form
for promotional purposes only; the form is not required to receive the
scholarship.

Applicants and winners are not considered members of Phi Beta Sigma or ZDS
and may not represent themselves as such.
