CREATECH ACADEMIES: ‘SUMMER SHORTS’ 2018 HELLO: COSTELLO SCHOOL, BASINGSTOKE! • This very brief PowerPoint slide show will take you through the main points of what CreaTech Academies is all about…
WHAT IS CREATECH ACADEMIES? • It is a programme that is being offered to Costello students that will take place during the FIRST WEEK of summer holidays; 23rd July 2018 to 27th July 2018. • It was partially founded by Mr. Chris Bruce, Media and Film Studies Teacher at Cardinal Wiseman in West Ealing, London, and will also be led by him during the week. • Miss. Ford, a KS3 English and KS4 Film Studies Teacher at the Costello School will also be there to support Mr. Bruce and his colleagues at CreaTECH Academies as the Film Week progresses. • The week will take place at The Costello School with some traveling to nearby parks and areas for filming – but parents will be told when that occurs and drop off/pick up times will always be at the school.
WHAT IS CREATECH ACADEMIES?
• Year 7, 8, and 9 students from The Costello School are able to attend the Film
Week
• If there are younger siblings, ages 8-9 who also want to be involved with the Film Week, they
are welcome to participate as long as the appropriate forms are signed.
• Those involved with the Film Week are all DBS certified and will keep parents in
the loop at all times.
• If you have any questions, there is contact information on the last slide that you

CREATECH ACADEMIES: ‘SUMMER SHORTS’ 2018 BEFORE THE SUMMER… • There will be a meeting. Possibly around the middle of June (tbc). This will allow us to do two things: • (a) Discuss the kinds of narrative/issues that the students want to make their film on • (b) The CreaTech team will start to assign parts/roles/technical duties to students involved. At this stage we will start to write acting roles around the issues and concerns that the student body have.
CREATECH ACADEMIES: ‘SUMMER SHORTS’ 2018 WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE WEEK IF MY SON/DAUGHTER IS INVOLVED? • The five days (w/c 23/07/18) will run from about 09.30 until 16.00 • The first day, Monday, is the ‘teaching’ day • On the Monday the students will learn about film form, genre, narrative, camera angles, camera movement, sound, music and effects. They will learn how ‘meaning is made’ through cinema • They will study clips, discuss the meaning of specific extracts and look at how mis-en- scene and camera contribute to how ides are communicated through film/cinema practice.
CREATECH ACADEMIES: ‘SUMMER SHORTS’ 2018 WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE WEEK IF MY SON/DAUGHTER IS INVOLVED? • On the Monday, the CreaTech leaders will look to see how the students in the cohort will fill the technical (behind the camera) and talent (in front of the camera) roles • On the Monday afternoon, students will be given a very ‘quick’ assignment – called ‘First Day Films’ where they will be able to make mistakes and reflect on their lack of focus (a perfectly natural place to be in; film making is a learned skill!)
CREATECH ACADEMIES: ‘SUMMER SHORTS’ 2018 WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE WEEK IF MY SON/DAUGHTER IS INVOLVED? • Tuesday: • Screenplay read through. Final assigning of roles. • Out filming; a tight schedule to get through • Some students will remain at ‘base’ and will start to construct digital animation using a range of software (Viddyoze, stop frame, etc.) • Some students will be solely in charge of The Making Of… which is a warts- and-all documentary of the ‘behind the scenes’!
CREATECH ACADEMIES: ‘SUMMER SHORTS’ 2018 WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE WEEK IF MY SON/DAUGHTER IS INVOLVED? • Wednesday: • Continuing filming; in ‘blocks’ or ‘units’ (two units at work at the same time) • Some students will remain at ‘base’ and will continue to construct digital animation using a range of software (Viddyoze, stop frame, etc.) • Some students will be solely in charge of The Making Of… which is a warts- and-all documentary of the ‘behind the scenes’! As there may be more than one ‘unit’ filming, the documenatry crew will also split into two different units
CREATECH ACADEMIES: ‘SUMMER SHORTS’ 2018 WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE WEEK IF MY SON/DAUGHTER IS INVOLVED? • Friday: • (AM) Continuing filming; in ‘blocks’ or ‘units’ (two units at work at the same time) • Some students will be solely in charge of The Making Of… a warts-and-all documentary of the ‘behind the scenes’! They will continue this work. • Some students will continue to put together a ‘crash’/full trailer, using the footage that we have filmed and uploaded so far. • Friday is also all about ‘pick-up’ shots; in other words, where some shots have not been successful, after review, the crew will call together all the actors so that they can re-do the necessary scenes again
CREATECH ACADEMIES: ‘SUMMER SHORTS’ 2018 WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF IT ALL? • September: We come back to Costello • We have the most fantastic Premiere night • There will be popcorn; there will be much excitement; there will be prizes!!!!!!! • We give everyone an engraved OSCAR style trophy, and a Certificate of Participation • The certificates are beautiful, bespoke and ‘embossed’ • The Certificates don’t just say ”Ooh well done!” They also record the SKILLS that you have learnt (eg: ‘Continuity/Screenplay Advisor’, ‘Camera Operator’, ‘Sound Recordist’, Props and Costume Manager’ etc.)
CREATECH ACADEMIES: ‘SUMMER SHORTS’ 2018 WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF IT ALL? • September: • We also award… • OSCAR style trophies to members of the cohort/group who have gone out of their way to be brilliant workers • Prizes are voted for BY the peers in the cohort, not by the CreaTech leaders! • Categories such as: Best Supportive Team Member, or Best Technical Member of the Cohort, Person Who Has Made the Most Progress, etc.
