Holy Communion Examination
We as Lutherans welcome people to join us in Holy Communion who have believing
faith in the true body and blood of our Lord under the bread and wine of this Sacrament,
given by Jesus Christ Himself for Christians to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of
sins, life, and salvation (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). It is proper for those who do not
believe or question this Sacrament to refrain from receiving it so as not to bring spiritual
harm upon themselves (1 Corinthians 11:27-28). If you have questions about our
Scriptural beliefs concerning Holy Communion, we encourage you to talk to Pastor
privately and consider joining us in the future. Today, we invite you to our communion
rail to receive a blessing. Please cross your arms over your chest to signify that you
desire the blessing. White grape juice is available in each tray.

Lectionary Summary
Today’s Readings:            Isaiah 65:17-25       1 Cor. 15:19-26        Luke 24:1-12
The Risen Lord Jesus Is Our Strength and Our Song, for He Has Become Our Salvation
O come, let us “sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously” (Ex. 15:1). By His
cross, He has shattered the enemy, crushing sin and death beneath His feet; in His
resurrection, He has brought us out of Egypt into the freedom of the Gospel. He has
called us out of darkness into light, and led us from confusion, fear and weeping into
the joy and gladness of His resurrection. He is our strength and our song, and He has
become our salvation (Ex. 15:2). Thus do we hear and respond to His voice of the
Gospel, as He calls each of us by name. We enter His tomb by our Baptism into His
death, and just as surely as He has risen, so we also “must rise from the dead” (John
20:9). “Let us therefore celebrate the festival” (1 Cor. 5:8), not in the revelry of self-
indulgence or in the debauchery of lust, but in sincere faith and genuine love. For
“Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Cor. 5:7). He has thereby set us
free from sin and death, and now He feeds us with Himself unto life everlasting.

Please remain standing if you are able.
The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.
Invocation
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C   Amen.

Confession and Absolution
P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our
    sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.
The Fifth Commandment: You shall not murder, but help and support our
neighbor in every physical need.

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We
    have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done
    and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole
    heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your
    present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ,
    have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight
    in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
                                                3
P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained
    servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead
    and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the
    name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C   Amen.

Please be seated.

Introit                             Exodus 15:2a, 6, 13, 17–18; antiphon: v. 1b
P   I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously;
       the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.
C The LORD is my strength and my song,
       and he has become my salvation.
P Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power,
       your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy.
C You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have
       redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy
       abode.
P You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain,
       the place, O LORD, which you have made for your abode,
C the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established.
       The LORD will reign forever and ever.

C   Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
       as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
P   I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously;
       the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.

Salutation and Collect of the Day
L The Lord be with you.
C   And also with you.
L Almighty God, through Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, You overcame death
and opened to us the gate of everlasting life. We humbly pray that we may live before
You in righteousness and purity forever; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C     Amen.

Old Testament Reading                                             Isaiah 65:17–25
 “Behold, I create new heavens
  and a new earth,
and the former things shall not be remembered
  or come into mind.
But be glad and rejoice forever
  in that which I create;
for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy,
  and her people to be a gladness.
I will rejoice in Jerusalem
  and be glad in my people;
no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping
  and the cry of distress.
No more shall there be in it
  an infant who lives but a few days,
  or an old man who does not fill out his days,
for the young man shall die a hundred years old,
  and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed.
They shall build houses and inhabit them;
  they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
They shall not build and another inhabit;
  they shall not plant and another eat;
for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be,
  and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
They shall not labor in vain
  or bear children for calamity,
for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the LORD,
  and their descendants with them.
Before they call I will answer;
  while they are yet speaking I will hear.
                                           5
The wolf and the lamb shall graze together;
 the lion shall eat straw like the ox,
 and dust shall be the serpent’s food.
They shall not hurt or destroy
 in all my holy mountain,”
says the LORD.

L This is the Word of the Lord.
C   Thanks be to God.
Epistle                                                       1 Corinthians 15:19–26
  If in this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
  But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have
fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection
of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each
in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.
Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after
destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has
put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

L This is the Word of the Lord.
C   Thanks be to God.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 24th chapter
C Glory to you O Lord

Holy Gospel                                                           Luke 24:1–12
  On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices
they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when
they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed
about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were
frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you
seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he
told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the
hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered
his words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to
all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James
and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, but these
words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter rose and
ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and
he went home marveling at what had happened.
L This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed
C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and
    of all things visible and invisible.
    And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His
    Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,
    begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all
    things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from
    heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made
    man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was
    buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and
    ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will
    come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom
    will have no end.

                                           7
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from
    the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is
    worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one
    holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the
    remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of
    the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Church

                                                        Service of the Sacrament
Preface
P The Lord be with you.
C         And also with you.
P         Lift up your hearts.
C We lift them to the Lord.
P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give
          thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And most especially
          are we bound to praise You on this day for the glorious resurrection of Your Son,
          Jesus Christ, the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us and bore the sins
          of the world. By His dying He has destroyed death, and by His rising again He has
          restored to us everlasting life. Therefore with Mary Magdalene, Peter and John,
          and with all the witnesses of the resurrection, with angels and archangels, and with
          all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore
          praising You and singing:

Sanctus

Prayer of Thanksgiving
P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those
    whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin
    and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for
    us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.
    Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to
    forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to
    eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather
    us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the
    marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive
    our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor,
    and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C   Amen.

The Words of Our Lord                          Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24;
                                            Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25

P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and
    when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said:
    “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of
    Me.”

    In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given
    thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new
                                            10
testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This
    do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ
P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until
    He comes.
C   Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to
    eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and
    passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the
    dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So
    remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer
C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
    Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;
    and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
    and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the
    kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini
P The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C Amen.

Communion Hymn 525 Crown Him with Many Crowns
1 Crown Him with many crowns,
    The Lamb upon His throne;
  Hark how the heav’nly anthem drowns
    All music but its own.
  Awake, my soul, and sing
    Of Him who died for thee,
  And hail Him as thy matchless king
    Through all eternity.

2 Crown Him the virgin’s Son,
The God incarnate born,
  Whose arm those crimson trophies won
     Which now His brow adorn:
  Fruit of the mystic rose,
     Yet of that rose the stem,
  The root whence mercy ever flows,
     The babe of Bethlehem.

3 Crown Him the Lord of love.
   Behold His hands and side,
Rich wounds, yet visible above,
   In beauty glorified.
No angels in the sky
   Can fully bear that sight,
But downward bend their wond’ring eyes
   At mysteries so bright.

                                         12
4 Crown Him the Lord of life,
   Who triumphed o’er the grave
And rose victorious in the strife
   For those He came to save.
His glories now we sing,
   Who died and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring
   And lives that death may die.

5 Crown Him the Lord of heav’n,
   Enthroned in worlds above,
  Crown Him the king to whom is giv’n
   The wondrous name of Love.
Crown Him with many crowns
   As thrones before Him fall;
Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns,
   For He is king of all.

Closing Hymn LSB 465 Now All the Vault of Heaven Resounds
1 Now all the vault of heav’n resounds
In praise of love that still abounds:
   “Christ has triumphed! He is living!”
Sing, choirs of angels, loud and clear!
Repeat their song of glory here:
      “Christ has triumphed! Christ has triumphed!”
      Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

2 Eternal is the gift He brings,
 Therefore our heart with rapture sings:

                                           14
“Christ has triumphed! He is living!”
    Now still He comes to give us life hymn continues on next page…
    And by His presence stills all strife.
         Christ has triumphed! He is living!
         Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

    3 O fill us, Lord, with dauntless love;
        Set heart and will on things above
       That we conquer through Your triumph;
      Grant grace sufficient for life’s day
      That by our lives we truly say:
         “Christ has triumphed! He is living!”
         Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

D 4 Adoring praises now we bring
      And with the heav’nly blessèd sing:
        “Christ has triumphed! Alleluia!”
      Be to the Father and our Lord,
      To Spirit blest, most holy God,
        All the glory, never ending!
        Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
