Message from the Principal
It truly feels as if summer has arrived since half term, the weather has got hotter and the cricket season is
in full swing! Summer also means exam season and students in Years 7, 8 & 9 will be sitting assessments in
lessons over the next two weeks. Students in Years 10 & 12 will sit exam papers in the hall and gym to give
them a taste of exam conditions. Although we do encourage all students to prepare for these exams as best
they can and to do their best, I would like to stress to parents the purpose of the assessments is also for
teachers to gauge where the gaps are in the students’ learning and plan for lessons going forward.

Reports and results (where relevant) will be sent home at the end of term via the MyED app and I would
strongly encourage every parent to ensure they have MyED installed and functioning on their mobile
phones as this is the primary way we communicate with home. We have had a few instances recently of
not being able to contact families in a timely manner because they do not have MyED or we do not have
up-to-date contact phone numbers. Please take a few minutes to check the app on your phone and let the
college office know if you have a new phone number.

We are hoping to be able to hold the more traditional summer term events such as sports day and
Achievement assemblies so we can celebrate the end of the academic year in a Covid-secure manner. More
details will be sent home in due course so please stay in touch.

Take care,

Ms Dohel
Principal

CCF Ashdown Forest
The Royal Marines Cadets enjoyed a Field Day in the Ashdown Forest on Saturday 12th June. Working
in teams, each led by a senior cadet, they took part in a variety of team-based events to develop team
working, leadership and problem solving skills.

These photos were taken at a CCF Saturday session before half term in preparation for their Field Day in Ashdown Forest.

The cadets put into practice many of the skills they learn at training sessions every Tuesday after college.
One of the activities enabled the cadets to experience firing blank ammunition in both wooded and open
environments. In this way, cadets are taught about the realities of firearms, in contrast to the unrealistic
and glamorised way they are often portrayed in films and video games.

First XI Cricket Success
Ernest Bevin 1st XI took on KCS Wimbledon on Wednesday 26th May. The boys were looking to bounce
back after a valiant loss in the Cup to Colfe’s (the reigning champions).

Bevin won the toss, and batted. Azeem and Faraz led the way, batting through the first 10 overs (for the
second match in a row). As well as finding the boundary regularly, they were able to find gaps, and scamper
plenty of singles (a huge improvement on game 1). Azeem was in especially good touch, timing the ball
really well, and frustrating the fielders by hitting 360 degrees.

EBC has a very solid 81 at the half way stage, but the KCS bowling was very miserly in the middle overs.
EBCBULLETIN - Ernest Bevin College
This, along with some fine ground fielding - hopefully we can emulate - frustrated the openers, then
dismissed them to rash shots.

When Azeem was bowled for a fine 58 (41 balls), Sheraz, Taha and Labib played a very selfless role. They
attacked and ran plenty of 1s and 2s, to keep the run rate high.

Final score: 154. A very good, but chasable score. We would have to be very disciplined to claim our first
win of the summer.

Captain Taha opened, and struck with his very first ball – a fast, straight in-swinger and an LBW. This
followed a period of slight over-excitement. It was clear that KCS wouldn’t roll over. They finished the
power play on 43-1, and looked set to kick on.

As the KCS batters started to cut loose, some magnificent fielding kept Bevin in the hunt. Sheri, Saffi and
Abdullah were particularly impressive. There were even some dives, not something we can practice on the
Bevin tarmac! Some clever field placements made the batter work hard for every run. The pressure finally
told, with Labib claiming the 2nd wicket, a super boundary catch by Taha.

The game was pretty much in the balance from start to finish. Suleiman and Sajeel bowled well, without
getting the breakthrough. With 32 to win from 4 overs, Taha brought himself back on, and went for just
3 runs, including the run out of the KCS dangerman. Sheri then produced a lightning throw to run out the
new batter, swinging the game in Bevin’s favour. But with Taha’s final ball, the new batter edged a 4 past
the keeper. Game on again!

It came down to 10 runs needed off 6 balls. Sheraz showed nerves of steel (after a wide) to keep a full
length. On the third ball of the over (8 to win), Daniel got hold of a ball that flew into the leg-side. With
everyone’s hearts in mouths, Faraz settled himself, and held onto a sharp catch inches from boundary. A
huge collective sigh of relief!

Sheraz closed out the game, and Bevin won by 4 runs. It was an absolutely thrilling finish, and Bevin were
delighted to finally be on the winning side of a close contest.

It was a pleasure to see every individual step up, take personal responsibility and improve from our game
last week. These “1%’ers” make the difference against the best teams. Captain Taha’s tactics had improved
massively. But most pleasing of all, the teamwork was superb as well, with everyone having each other’s
backs. Long may that continue!

Year 12 Students at the Principal’s Breakfast

Footnote: The team travelled to University College School, Hampstead on Wednesday 16th June and it was
another close game but unfortunately we narrowly missed out on a second win.

NOTICES

MyED
Last week the MyED app was updated by the parent company and we became aware of an issue with some
parents not receiving messages on version 3.1. The company have fixed the problem and issued an updated
version 3.2. If you have “Automatic Updates” switched on, the app should have updated and all messages
sent will appear.

If you are still experiencing an issue with not being able to see messages, please go to the App Store on
your iPhone, search for the MyEd app and tap the Update button. We would advise parents not to delete
and reinstall the app because old messages will be removed.

Please contact the college office if you are having problems or send a message on MyED.
It is really important that you open messages regularly; if you fail to open 3 messages in a row, the app
will class you as an inactive user and stop sending new messages. We strongly urge parents to check
messages when they arrive as this is the main way we communicate with home and keep you informed
about your child’s education.

Tours of EBC
We are pleased to be able to offer tours of the college for prospective parents looking for a place for their
son to join Year 7. We ask that families book a tour in advance via the website

Hot weather
With the recent hot weather some of the students are overheating. This is largely due to excess clothing
and too little water! Please encourage the boys to leave their coats and jumpers at home. They are also
allowed to remove their blazers in the hot weather. We encourage all students to bring a good supply of
water each day in a reusable bottle. Covid restrictions do limit access to water fountains but students can
refill their bottles at break and lunchtime.

Dropping off children at college
We encourage students to travel to college using active transport. We have much improved cycle parking
to the front of the main building. If families do drop or collect students by car this must be done with
consideration for neighbours. We have received some complaints about cars blocking roads or parking
across drives when they are dropping off or picking up children from the college.

Breakfast
Breakfast club is now open to all years from 8.15am each morning by the pupil entrance. Students must sit
in socially distanced bubbles.
We have a good supply of donated breakfast cereals, Year 7 all went home with a box of Shreddies before
the half term. If any other families would like a box of cereal please send a message to Mrs Dobinson via
MYED.

Uniform and sports kit
Thanks to all the families who have dropped off uniform that they have outgrown. This has all now been
sorted and prepared to be passed on to families in need. Any further contributions are very gratefully
received. Please drop off any donations of clean and serviceable uniform and sports kit to the yellow bin
which is at reception.

Covid-19
Please keep testing. We have had very few positive cases to deal with in the months since reopening, but
we must not become complacent. We have a good supply of Lateral Flow and PCR tests. Please send a
message via MyED if you need more test kits.

Edibles
Wandsworth Safeguarding Children Partnership have sent us some information about drugs that are
packaged to look like sweets as there is concern that a small number of young people in the local area have
access to them and may require medical help as a result. Please click the link below for more information
and contact the college if you have any specific concerns.
