As the crow flies west to east across Limpopo in South Africa, Motswari Private Game

meeting at a private concert given by Tian in
Cape Town 12 years ago, when they
discovered a mutual passion for music and
wildlife. ‘His music is powerful, moving.
Most of the crowd started to cry,’ says
Fabrice. ‘Tian started to come regularly to
Motswari, and one day we decided to host a
crazy concert in the bush, in the middle of
nowhere, with a grand piano. Soon after that
we experienced the tragic death of a rhino
poached on one of our properties.’
According to figures released by the
South African Department of Environmen-
tal Affairs, at least two rhinos were poached
per day in the Kruger Park last year despite
overall poaching numbers dropping below
1 000 for the first time since 2012. South
Africa has the largest population of rhinos in
the world and savetherhino.org says most
illegal activity occurs in this 19 485km2
protected habitat.
That poaching incident inspired Fabrice
and Marion to establish Rhino Disharmony
through which artists from many
backgrounds unite to raise awareness of the
animals’ plight through the only language
that is understood internationally: art – from
music to painting to sculpture to poetry.
Tian was their first Rhino Disharmony
ambassador.
Motswari is a second-generation
family-owned property located in the
Timbavati and Umbabat private nature

26 SAIL+LEISUREINDUSTRY NEWS SA IL
I t was a star-studded night for the more
than 200 guests attending the recent
inaugural South African Boatbuilders
Export Council (SABBEX)/Boating South
Africa (BSA) Legends and Trailblazers
Awards dinner at the Kelvin Grove Club
Ballroom in Cape Town. After lots of
questions about formal dress for the
evening, the who’s who of the boating indus-
try turned up in their finest for a
glamourous event arranged to recognise
industry luminaries.
We received multiple nominations,
which were then considered by SABBEX
and Messe Frankfurt. Messe Frankfurt,
owners of the Cape Town International Boat
Show, partnered with SABBEX for the
event, providing support and contributions
for the evening.
The five winners per category were
based on the strength of the motivations
received from the industry, except for one
surprise award that I selected in
recognition of contributions to the SA
boating industry over the past 18 years.
Next year we are looking to reward
long-term service for staff and possibly
introduce a rising-stars category.
Alderman James Vos of the City of Cape

reasserted the Economic Opportunities and

commitment to supporting boatbuilding and
marine manufacturing in the Western Cape.
Keynote speaker Skip Novak, who needs no
introduction in the sailing world, gave a
presentation on his adventure sailing
expeditions and spoke about key people in
the industry, such as boatbuilder Richard
Bertie, whom he encountered during his
career in South Africa. The awards were
handed out by Dumisani Ntuli, Acting
Deputy Director General: Maritime
Transport, and Wesgro CEO Tim Harris
gave the closing remarks.
But the real stars of the evening were the
boating industry stalwarts and innovators.
